Animal Profile

Peralta

Hello, my name is Peralta. My animal id is #251323. I am a female white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 4/5/2026.

Peralta is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Peralta arrived at the Care Center as a stray. During her handling assessment Peralta was social with staff and treat receptive. Despite warming up to staff, Peralta has been noted to be on-leash reactive to both dogs and people during walks. Additionally, despite efforts to keep her comfortable, Peralta is showing signs of deterioration in kennel. She has been persistently pawing and banging at the transfer door in her kennel. Medically, Peralta is being treated for CIRDC and is in heat.

I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace.

However, Peralta is noted to settle when the room is quiet and the behavior is not as persistent as it was previously noted to be. 4/24/26: Peralta has been observed to bark at dogs outside; she is able to be redirected, but it is not as easy. 4/23/26: It is noted on the whiteboard that Peralta is "barking and pawing on the transfer door". 4/22/26: Staff reported that Peralta is growling at people that pass by too close to her on the street. 4/21/26: It is reported that Peralta is banging on the transfer door. 4/18: Volunteer Note - Seemed shy on the street. Glanced at me occasionally while keeping her head down. She peed outside quickly and then never stopped walking. She wasn’t pulling or rushing. Went back into kennel fine but flailed to get leash off, pulling back hard and thrashing. Had no issues leashing her.

Summary (7):: 04/16/26: Peralta is laying down in her kuranda bed sleeping as handler approaches. She is leashed slowly while distracted with a treat and taken to the street for her walk. Outside she is hypervigilant and walks with handler for a bit uneventfully, passing people and dogs without issue though she does show a tense body and avoids passing people. She is then brought inside for her assessment and once complete she is returned to kennel without issue. 4/13/26: Peralta is at the front of her kennel neutral body. She is easily leashed and removed from kennel. Peralta is walked on the street where she walks slightly ahead of handler moderate leash pressure. She will jump on handler, paws on torso soft body, briefly before jumping down and continuing the walk. She is not interested in treats. Handler is able to clip the leash gently and she return without issue. 4/10/26 (PM walks): Peralta is at the front of her kennel with a neutral body; the handler feeds her treats and leashes her. Once outside, Peralta pulls towards a familiar handler. While walking through the hallway and onto the street, Peralta looks up repeatedly at the handler with a soft body; the handler tosses treats for her to eat. On the street, Peralta walks ahead with mild leash tension; she doesn't react to dogs or passersby. Peralta engages with the handler with a soft body, jumping on them and soliciting pets. While walking towards the building, Peralta barks at a man fixing their car a few feet away. As she enters the building, she sniffs an familiar handler and later on, quietly barks at them. The handler clips their leash and returns Peralta to her kennel. 4/10/26: Peralta is reported to turn towards and growl as the handler, while fixating on their legs. She lowers her body and intensifies her growling 4/6/26: It is reported on the behavior board that Peralta is head shy

Date of initial:: 4/7/2026

Summary:: Tail tucked under, whale eyed

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Peralta so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 4/10/26: Peralta is reported to turn towards and growl as the handler, while fixating on their legs. She lowers her body and intensifies her growling.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Peralta has been observed to be fearful while in care. During her medical exam Peralta was observed to be tucked tail and show whale eyes. She has also been observed to turn towards handlers and growl while on leash. It is important to move slowly with Peralta, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On-Leash Reactivity/Barrier Frustration: Peralta has been observed to pull toward people and dogs on walks and has been reported to be difficult to redirect. Peralta may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On-Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
