Bambi
Hello, my name is Bambi. My animal id is #262147. I am a male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 8/10/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormBambi is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Since arriving at the care centers he has been observed to pull very hard on leash and has shown lack of impulse control consistently during interactions. He has shown a low threshold for arousal and has escalated to leash biting, jumping on and mouthing handlers. Additionally Bambi has shown signs of deterioration in kennel shortly after arriving and will intensely bite his crate bars or kennel walls. Bambi has otherwise shown social behavior toward handlers when interacted with. Medically, Bambi is apparently healthy.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

While in care he has also shown high levels of stress in kennel and has been observed chewing on his kennel bars intensely. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 8/15/26: Bambi is introduced to a novel intact female and approaches the fence with a loose body, high wagging tail, and perked ears. He disengages quickly and interacts with his handler. He reapproached with a loose body and marked nearby the fence. The other dog is let in and he flags over with a forward leaning body, hackles raised and begins circling the other dog with high wags. He toe taps and attempts to stand on her but she quickly bounces away and he gives a growl. He circles toe tapping attempting chin overs and to mount but the other dog continues bouncing to be face to face and he gives another growl before the two are separated.
Summary (7):: 8/15/26 (D2D): Bambi was at front of kennel and stood putting his paws on kennel door. He was easily leashed and pulled for playgroup (Please see dog to dog notes for details). When returning to kennel he balked outside the room and also just before his kennel. A second handler had to help and handler had to jog him back to kennel. 8/14/26: Bambi is at the front of his kennel with a loose body; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. Bambi pulls hard on the street; he doesn't react to people or dogs. While walking back to the building, Bambi repeatedly looks back at the dog being walked behind us; he only disengages when the handler brings him to walk on the side of the road. Bambi is brought inside the office for his assessment. Before the assessment, Bambi moderately pulls around the room; he also places his front paws on the handler's lap. Bambi only eats treats from the handler's hand, as he sniffs, then ignores the ones on the floor. Eventually he lies down; Bambi heavily pants through the entire duration of him in the office. After the assessment is completed, the handler walks Bambi to the room, however, he immediately baulks outside the room; another K9 behavior uses their leash as a sling and both handlers bring Bambi into his kennel. 8/13/26 (PM): Bambi is observed to baulk outside the room while being returned; the handlers had to use a sling to get him to enter the room and his kennel. Once he's in the kennel, Bambi attempts to flee, so the handler has to quickly close the kennel door as they remove their leash. Additionally, Bambi begins to eat at the shared kennel wall; mid value treats, like peanut butter and spray cheese, are used, but he shows no interest. Bambi is sprayed with water and he finally stops. The handlers are able to move him into a new kennel later on. 8/13/26: Bambi is reported to pull hard towards people and dogs in the driveway in a curious manner. Additionally, when he was in the crate, Bambi bit and tugged the crate bars, to the point of opening one of the corners; he was also heavily panting. He also baulked while being brought into the crate the previous day; however, he has been moved into the kennel.
Date of intake:: 8/10/2026
Summary:: panting and pacing, but was fine on the leash and allowed handling
Date of initial:: 8/11/2026
Summary:: Very high energy, difficult to manage, not distracted easily
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Bambi so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No Children (Under 13): Due to Bambi's exuberance and lack of impulse control paired with his mouthiness, we recommend a home with no children. Place with a New Hope Partner: We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Anxiety,Leash-biting,Strength/leash pulling
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners/Poor Impulse Control: During medical intake and during his assessment Bambi was reported to jump exuberantly on handlers and had difficulty controlling his impulses. Please see handout on Basic Manners and Poor Impulse Control. Social Hyperarousal/Mouthiness/Leash Biting: Bambi is quick to become excited and jumpy and will also mouth handlers when passing a certain threshold of excitement. During the jogging portion of the assessment Bambi became excited and began biting the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Bambi to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. He should be rewarded with treats when calm. If he escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Bambi. Please see handouts on Social Hyperarousal and Mouthiness. Anxiety: During his assessment handlers noted that Bambi would whine and pant throughout the interaction. We recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. Strength/Leash Pulling: Staff have reported that during walks Bambi is difficult to manage due to his hard pulling. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Polite Leash Manners.
