King
Hello, my name is King. My animal id is #246041. I am a desexed male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 9 years 2 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 1/21/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- homeless.
King is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has somewhat warmed up to staff using treats to build a positive association; however, he may still attempt to avoid or swat when reaching close to pet or handle him. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

I have been known to shower my favorite people in love! I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. What my friends at ACC say about me: King was lying down in loaf position with a tense body and wide eyes upon approach. When reaching close with the scratcher tool, he sniffs it and flinches when touching his nose to the tool. When receiving cheek rubs, he leans back, turns his head to the side, and lip licks. When stroking his body, he looks back to focus on the tool with his fur slightly pilo-erect, sniffs and slightly flinches at it again, and lip licks. He turns his head forward and continues to tolerate more cheek rubs. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress A volunteer writes: King's a victim of circumstances and reading the notes his previous guardian left for us, I cried and wished the circumstances were different. King doesn't want to say much about any of it and I can't blame him, but the person who loves him most thoughtfully explained at length what makes him such a special companion and I'd love so much to share some of their words with you. First, "King is an affectionate lap cat! He's a chatty guy who loves to sit with you on the couch and talk. If you're not in the mood, that's fine he loves to play too! King enjoys playing hide and seek and likes to chase and pounce on toys." Love an easygoing, social, affectionate, AND playful guy! Sounds pretty perfect to me, but secondly and very importantly, King "will hide initially and then become curious" when meeting new people. As you can imagine, the shelter combined with the drastic change in circumstances hasn't made for an easy environment or time. There will be better days for King, but he needs a hand. Maybe you can please offer him one?

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 1/27/26 PRIOR ASSESSMENT King is inside his den hidden from view. The scratcher tool is presented to the portal and King is heard softly hissing. When the assessor lifts the den cover, King hisses harder, his eyes dilated and ears flattened. He then lunges forward and strikes at the front of the den with intensity several times, growling and spitting. The assessor places the den cover back on and King continues to thrash and strike inside of the den. 2/8/26 PRIOR ASSESSMENT King was lying down in loaf position with a tense body and wide eyes upon approach. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress. 1/30/26 FB20 King is inside of his den. He harshly hisses when the hander opens the door and extends a scratcher tool towards the portal. When he stops hissing, the handler marks, removes the tool and gently closes the kennel door. 02/04/26 ACFR King was in his den when the handler approached. When the door opened and the den cover was lifted he immediately swatted and hissed at the door. King would continue to spit and hissed. When the scratcher tool was introduced through the side den door, King swatted and growled persistently. 2/9/26 ACFR King was crouched on top of his den when handler approached. The kennel door was slowly opened, and a tray with wet food and squeeze up was placed next to him on the edge of the den. He remained where he was with a tense body, ears slightly to the side, and tail wrapped tightly around him. He lip licked but did not escalate. After tray was placed, he sniffed at it while staring at handler but did not engage further. 2/15/26 Vol. Resting in den with one eye visible through the portal and dilated. Leaned out to sniff a cup of Temptations and squeeze-up on the tool, but didn't eat and retreated. Ate treats when dropped into den. Leaned out to sniff a second cup, but then had a sneezing fit. When offered treats just outside the portal, he tried to pull the cup in with his paw, then ate once in den again. He came all the way out for a trail of dry treats on his towel, but quickly retreated, sneezing again. ~continued in GAN!
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Calm,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Rough play,Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: King was observed to hiss, lunge, swat, growl, and spit during the initial behavior assessment (see Enrichment Notes above from 1/27/26 for more details); however, after about 2 weeks on gabapentin and time to adjust to the shelter environment, King was observed to tolerate petting on the head, cheeks, and body during the re-evaluation.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Adult only home due to initially fearful behavior observed and behavior reports from the previous home about how King was shy, timid, and will hide initially and then become tolerant or may play rough with children.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: King is at the front of the kennel; eyes wide, pupils dilated, and meowing softly as the assessor approaches. He is tolerant of brief petting on the top of his head and cheeks but flinches, leans away, and backs up to avoid contact, lifting a paw. King is offered crunchy treats, and he immediately begins eating them. When petting is attempted again, he flinches and backs away, lip licking. Pickup is not attempted due to observed behavior. King tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
