Chu Chu
Hello, my name is Chu Chu. My animal id is #260232. I am a male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 7/20/2026.
Chu Chu is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. A volunteer writes: When I met Chu Chu, he was snuggled all the way in the back of his cubby considering the comings and goings of Adoptions with all the interest in the world and just as much reservation. Shelter life hasn't exactly been a rose garden for this gentle hearted cat and though Chu Chu came to us without a lot of information back in July, we have every reason to believe he would appreciate a quiet and patient home. Finding his way at the Care Center has been an enormous ask made all the more complicated by the fact that he doesn't seem to want much help from our end. There are a couple of things he seems to enjoy, like treats, which he tentatively sniffs before partaking, and Chu Chu loves to watch us play with feather wands through his little cubby window. What Chu Chu would love most of all, however, is a second chance.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Chu Chu was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment. Chu Chu does have a scratch history. Chu Chu was sitting the client's couch alone, when Chu Chu approached her growling. Without further warning, the cat climbed onto her and scratched her on her upper right cheek. She subsequently called 911 for a vicious animal report, where police responded around 1am. The officer tried to attempt to grab the cat by the scruff, which resulted in the cat lashing out and scratching the officers right arm, before running away.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/8/26 FB73 Chu Chu is laying in his cubby, tense and observing the handler with dilated pupils as they approach. When going to open the cubby door, he lunges forward, hissing and swatting at the door. The handler gives him a moment to settle before very slowly opening the door, and Chu Chu pauses and looks over before exiting the cubby to avoid contact. The handler closes the door and speaks to him softly as he stays in a loaf position at the back of his top shelf, slowly sliding a tray of tuna in through the kennel bars. He sniffs the air and after a few moments he slowly approaches the front of the kennel, body held low, and begins eating the tray of tuna. 9/9/26 He was resting in a relaxed position inside the den upon approach. When spoken to softly, he hissed and appeared uncomfortable with the interaction. He briefly showed interest in the offered treats and allowed limited petting along his head with the scratcher tool before hissing again. The interaction was ended to help reduce his stress and allow him to remain comfortable. 9/13/26 Vol. Resting in cubby. Hissed when approached and hissed while leaning out portal to eat cup Temptations and squeeze-up, then came out to the front of the kennel briefly before retreating. Came out to eat more Temptations tossed in, then would not come out again, even for more squeeze-up. Remained peering out portal and returned blinks. Watched the cat dancer toy, then retreated farther back into cubby. But batted at it once it was in range and enjoyed playing for a few minutes, remaining in cubby. Came out to eat some of the squeeze-up from earlier once playtime was over. 9/16/26 Vol. Chu Chu was lying on his side in cubby, looking into main kennel with soft eyes. He hissed when approached, then gave slow blinks. He poked his head into main kennel to eat squeeze up from scratcher tool, then leaned back to avoid petting. He played interactively with a feather toy for a few minutes, remaining in cubby and reaching out to paw at the toy. At one point he came out into main kennel to chase toy but appeared fearful and began to low growl. He returned to cubby and continued to play interactively for another minute or so, then played on his own.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 07/28/26 Chu Chu is on the top of the den laying down with wide, dilated eyes. He leans forward to sniff scratcher tool but begins backing away when pet on his cheeks. His eyes continue to dilate when pet along his body and he begins creeping off the den as if to flee. The interaction is ended to not increase his fear, anxiety, and stress. 08/29/26 Chu Chu was crouched in his den with dilated eyes and his tail wrapped around his legs. When the handler approached with treats, he hissed and showed no interest in them. He then slowly started backing away as the handler held out the click stick. He sniffed the tool and allowed petting along his head and body before eventually hissing again. The interaction was ended to reduce FAS. 9/29/26 Chu Chu has shown some improvement and during this assessment eats offered treats and does not hiss or growl. He is sleeping in the back of his cubby. When the door slowly opens, he raises his head and has neutral eyes and forward ears. He sniffs offered scratcher tool with squeeze up and initially does not eat it. After trying a second time with dry treats, he begins licking the treats. While eating he allows a few pets on his cheek with the tool before pulling back. He begins eating again and once finished sits upright staring at the assessor. He allows gentle petting again on his cheeks and along his body but appears tense. After the interaction he walks into the main area of his kennel to finish his wet food. Chu Chu tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
