This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Mustard is at risk for behavioral issues. He has demonstrated high levels of FAS while in care. During his assessment he was observed to maintain his distance from handlers and vocalize (huff) at them when they move. Mustard will accept treats and pets from familiar handlers. Mustard is apparently healthy. Mustard arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. During his last stay in the care center Mustard was observed to be fearful. He reportedly growled during both his intake and medical exam. He was observed to be pancaking during leashing, and once out of his kennel, he continued to display a tense, fearful posture. However, he did show some interest in high-value treats and accepted a few when offered. During his current stay in the care center, Mustard has continued to be observed as fearful. Noted to growl at handlers when they attempt to interact. During his assessment Mustard huffed at the handler when they tried to coax him. However, he has remained receptive to treats. Due to the detailed behavior, Muster will need placement in an adult-only home that can support him using positive reinforcement to work on his behavior.

Summary:: 5/12/26: Mustard greets another dog at the gate with a neutral body and soft wagging tail. Pressure is placed on the leash to move him away. He becomes tense, barking with hackles raised.
Summary (6):: 05/14/26: Mustard is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed while distracted with treats but begins jumping and barking at the kennel door, once leashed he is removed from kennel and walks with handler out to the street for his walk. He pulls mildly outside and passes dogs and people, showing brief mild interest in both but losing interest on his own after a moment while maintaining a neutral body posture. He is walked back inside for his assessment and once complete he is returned to kennel without issue. 5/11/26: Mustard is standing at the front of his kennel with a neutral body and slow, medium/low wagging tail. He takes treats. He is easily leashed and lead to the street. He fixates on a known staff member eating a sandwich outside, but recovers with space and treats. He walks ahead of the handler with a neutral body and ears back. A member of the public attempts to greet him and reaches out to him (about 5 inches from his face), facing him head on. He does not react (aside from a sniff at the air) and the handler has time to request that the public member not pet him, which request they respect. Mustard continues on his walk and returns to his kennel with a tossed treat.
Summary (7):: 5/5/26: Mustard is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body and slow wagging tail; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. On the street, Mustard walks ahead with little to no leash tension; when walking past people, he lowers his head, looks at them, and slowly walks past. Mustard sniffs the handler with a soft body when they speak to him. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Mustard to his kennel with ease. 5/3/26: Mustard is standing in the middle of his kennel. He lip licks. He comes forwards for a treat and wags his tail low. He begins jumping up and down on the kennel door when unlocked. He is somewhat easily leashed and lead to the yard. He sniffs around and checks in with the handler, seemingly seeking treats. He takes treats with a soft mouth. He is lead back to the building and becomes tense going through the kennel room. He balks at his kennel door then quickly changes his mind and jumps in with leash pressure. He takes another treat. 05/02/25: Mustard is near the front of his kennel as handler approaches. As handler approaches to leash Mustard he backs away, when offered treats he accepts them hesitantly. He allows handler to place a leash on him, but once his kennel door is opened he lowers his head and tenses up. He begins to slink down to the floor of his kennel until his whole body plops down in the front. Handler along with a member of k9 behavior attempt to use squeakers as well as more treats to coax Muster out of kennel but all attempts are unsuccessful. Handlers remove his leash with a hook and wait a bit for the room to quiet down before attempting again to remove Muster from kennel for his walk. Handler approaches and is again able to successfully leash Muster, this time he exits kennel without issue. He is walked to the yard and is tense with his head low when walking. He sits alongside handler once outside, Muster progressively moves closer to handler while they sit on a bench in the play yard before eventually sniffing and gently soliciting attention. Handler briefly and gently pets Muster for a bit, he walks around the perimeter of the yard for a bit more and is brought back inside. Muster returns to kennel without issue and interaction is ended shortly after. 5/2/25: It is reported by staff that when they approached Muster to clip his leash, Muster growled at them. The staff member then kneeled and Muster allowed him to clip his leash with a slow approach. Pre clip sign added to his kennel. 4/30/26: Mustard is reported to keep his distance from the handler during the walk; he walks ahead and immediately pulls behind the handler. Additionally, the handler presents their hand, but Mustard low growls.
Date of intake:: 4/29/2026
Summary:: Growling and barking
Date of initial:: 4/30/2026
Summary:: Quiet, on trazodone, no growl
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Mustard so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the fearful behavior observed in the Care Centers, Muster should go to a home with older children.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Muster is highly fearful and growled when uncomfortable. Positive reinforcement should be used to help Muster associate new people with things he likes such as treats and toys. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression.
