Animal Profile

Mosey

Hello, my name is Mosey. My animal id is #222298. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/18/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- new baby.

Mosey is currently on the at-risk list due to behavioral concerns. He has been observed to be highly fearful in the Care Center environment—trembling, darting away from loud noises, and maintaining a tense posture with his tail tightly tucked. While he has begun to soften with some staff members, his overall behavior remains fear-based. According to his previous owner, Mosey is social and friendly, enjoys car rides, but has a history of lunging at small dogs during walks. Medically, Mosey has dental disease but is overall healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. Not only do I pull at heart strings, but I also pull on leash! I will need someone to help me with my leash manners. I would prefer someone who can be home with me most of the time.

He continued to have a tense body frame and a tucked tail. When loud bikes and cars would pass, he would try to hide behind the handler and jump on the handler. When a construction worker dropped something across the street, he bolted forward and continued to pull on the way back to his kennel. He quickly entered his kennel with ease and barked at the handler as they locked it and walked away. 4/13/25: ACS report that Mosey is very anxious on the street, and that he attempts to jump on people. 4/7/25: Mosey is at the back of the kennel, he approaches the front with a soft body when handler approaches. On the street Mosey is pulling hard to moderate and heavy panting with a strained expression. When stopping briefly he stands with a tucked tail and is shaking. Dogs pass and he pays no attention to them. A group of people pass Mosey and he stands tail tucked and shaking but leans forward to smell them as they pass. Summary:: Whale eyed. Tail tucked. Tense body for exam

ENERGY LEVEL:: Mosey is described as medium energy. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for them.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : Fearful,Separation anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Mosey has been observed to be fearful during his stay in the care center. Noted to have a tense body and trembling while showing whale eye. During his stay in the care, Mosey has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to have a tense trembling body and tucked tail. It is important to always go slow and give Mosey the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Mosey would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Separation Anxiety: Mosey's previous owner states that he becomes anxious when left alone. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and be prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. They would do best in a home where a person is home for a large part of the day or with a plan so they are not alone for long periods of time. Please see handout on Separation Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Mosey's previous owner states that he will lunge towards small dogs. Mosey will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Pulling: Mosey's previous owner states that he pull hard on leash. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage, and that they be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
