Animal Profile

Zeus

Hello, my name is Zeus. My animal id is #235965. I am a male brown tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/5/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving - out of country.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Zeus is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. His owner describes him as a friendly, affectionate, quite, lazy, independent cat. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically he is matted, but otherwise healthy.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/11/25 FB61 Zeus is in his cat down as I approach, body and face completely hidden from View. He does not come out when offered treats or a catnip toy and when I check on him later, after leaving the room, the offerings are still untouched. When I lift his den cover, I see that he has very big cheeks. He is adorable but not adjusting to our shelter at this time. 9/15/25 FB79 Inside of the den, Zeus hisses when i lift the cover and speak to his as he is curled in the back with his eyes wide and tail tightly wrapped. He hisses once again when i toss in treats and has no reaction to them. Zeus remains very still and tense when i use to the tool to touch the top of his head and run it down his back as well as around his body. He slow blinks when i start to speak softly but does not ease up and can be heard hissing some more when i lower the den cover and close the kennel door. 9/19/24 FB61 Zeus was in his cat den as I approached, body and face completely hidden from View. Zeus did not come out when offered treats or a catnip toy and he remained hidden while I use the cat pool toy as a visual enrichment for the entire room. Zeus is not interested in interaction at this time and would benefit from placement the shelter is proving to be too overwhelming for him. 9/20/25 FB79 Inside of his den, Zeus is facing the back corner with a tightly wrapped tail and lifts his head when I lift the den cover for a better view. He slow blinks when I speak to him softly, but has no interest in the treats that I tossed inside. Zeus flinches, ducks and dodges the pointer tool with now tilted ears when I attempt to pet the top of his head and snapped his head back, watching the tool run down his back but remains still/tolerant. I left some high value treats outside of the den for when he feels comfortable. 9/23/25 FB61 Zeus was in his cat den as I approached, completely hidden from View. I left some scent enrichment by his den door and turned around to prepare some squeeze up treats to put into his kennel. When I turned back around Zeus‘s head was poked out of his den and he was sniffing the enrichment offered! He retreated once again when I put the treats in his kennel and he remains hidden for the duration of time I was in the room. It was very brave of him to poke his head out of his den today, that has not happened before. We will continue to build positive associations. 9/26/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, head peering out at me and one paw draped lightly over the threshold of his den door. He does watch the cat dancer toy hesitantly as I use it as visual enrichment for the entire room, however he will not leave his den today for the duration of time I'm in holding. I leave him some treats and a catnip toy for later and I speak to him softly whenever I pass by him. Appears more curious than previous sessions, but still very wary. GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Timid

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Adult only home due to the behaviors displayed in shelter as well as previous home notes.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Press up into the back corner of the kennel Zeus is laid out with his paws in front, a loose tail forward ears and almond eyes; however, he fixate on the assessor as his eyes widen and dilate. And the assessor speaks softly he starts to low growl and grumble. When treats are tossed in front of him, he has no interest. When the assessor brings in the pointer tool for him to sniff his ears completely flattened into his head as he starts too loudly grumble and his tail wraps around his body. When the assessor brings the tool over his head for petting, he starts to hiss/spit as he tries to press himself into the corner of the den. Zeus maintained a very tense body with his shoulders, hunched and tightly wrapped tail, wide dilated eyes and airplane ears throughout the interaction. As the assessor ran the tool down and around his body, Zeus harshly hissed as well as continuing to loudly growl and grumble, followed by an attempted swat. Pick up was not attempted at this time. Zeus is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He/she has tried to swat / scratch / bite / is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
