Max
Hello, my name is Max. My animal id is #226322. I am a male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 6 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/4/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormMax is at risk due to behavioral reasons. During intake Max was observed to hard bark, lunge and snap towards people and dogs. After reacting to stimuli Max was observed to redirect onto a familiar dog. Due to the high levels of reactivity Max has received limited handling during his stay. In kennel Max has a neutral body. Medically Max is apparently healthy.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...
Due to the detailed behavior issues, this animal is only available for foster/adoption through one of ACC's New Hope Partners. If you are interested in adopting or fostering, please fill out the pre-screener form. This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form. Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. Pre-Screener Form Max arrived at MACC as an owner surrender. We have a limited history on Max so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, Max has been observed to be highly dog reactive. Observed to hard bar, lunge, and snap towards dogs and people. After reacting to stimuli max was observed to redirect onto a familiar dog. Due to the detailed behaviors we recommend an experienced adult only home.

Summary:: Max arrived at MACC with their owners looking to surrender. During intake Max was lunging, hard barking and snapping towards dog and people that passed by, at one point almost making contact with a member of the public. Max's head was darting back and forth and was reacting to stimuli from about 50ft away, displaying the same behaviors. Max was tied to another dog and they began to redirect onto each other after reacting. Due to the high levels of reactivity, Max is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (7):: 5/5/25: Max is at the front of the kennel when the handler approaches. He has a neutral body and wags his tail when the handler speaks in a soft tone. The handler offers Max a treat, he takes it with a soft mouth but drops it immediately. Sniffing it for a second before he continues to look at the handler. Handler ends interaction. 5/4/25: Max is observed to be lunging, hard barking, and snapping (almost making contact with MOP hand) in front of the care centers. He has a tense body and heavily pulling forward when not lunging. His head darting back and forth and is reacting to both people and dogs walking past him, as well as from a distance. Handler stands about 50 feet away and Max hard stares and begins to display the same behavior as mentioned above. Handler walks in the other direction. Intake Behavior: 5/5/25 (late entry)- K9 behavior assisted with bringing Max in. Handler had owner put a slip lead on, his original walking gear was also a slip lead. He followed handlers with a neutral body, sniffing around the drive way. He was taken to pharmacy to be sedated. He was gate squeeze and sedated. One handler tethered second slip lead and K9 behavior ended their interaction with Max.
Date of intake:: 5/4/2025
Summary:: Hard barking, lunging, and snapping towards dogs and people
Date of initial:: 5/4/2025
Summary:: Opted to sedate
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have a limited history on Max so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to high levels of reactivity we recommend a home with no children. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to high levels of reactivity and redirecting onto a familiar dog we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: On Leash Reactivity: Max has been observed to hard bark, lunge and snap towards people and dogs while on leash. After reacting to stimuli Max was observed to redirect onto a familiar dog. Max will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
