Animal Profile

Rusty

Hello, my name is Rusty. My animal id is #239242. I am a male gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 10/14/2025.

Rusty is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Rusty arrived at the Care Centers as a stray with no known history. Upon intake Rusty was noted to be highly fearful and defensive, growling at staff and snapped at police officers that found him. During his stay, Rusty has shown concerning levels of reactivity to other dogs. Rusty is observed to pull-hard toward dogs with raised hackles and become tense body; he is not easily redirected. With select staff, Rusty has shown limited socialization. Medically Rusty is noted to have dental disease and CIRDC.

Summary:: Leash Walking Strength and pulling: Hard Reactivity to humans: None Reactivity to dogs: Moderate Leash walking comments: Fixates on other dogs with a tense body, turns to look back at them while passing Sociability Loose in room (15-20 seconds): Moderately social Call over: Approaches handler readily Sociability comments: Checks in with handler, explores room Soft handling: Accepts contact Exuberant handling: Fearful Comments: Begins backing away and resists restainst during exuberant contact Arousal Jog comments: Follows handler exuberantly Knock Knock comments: Approaches handler readily Toy Toy comments: Pounces on toy, Grips light and engages with toy, neutral body and wagging tail

Summary:: 10/21/25: Rusty greets another dog with a soft body and soft wagging tail. However, when he greets a different dog, he tenses and snaps towards them.

Summary (7):: 10/21/25: Rusty is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body. He is easily leashed and taken for a street walk. He would have a hard pull ahead of the handler, throughout the walk he would spot a dog and become tense bodied with raised hackles. He isn't easily redirected with a squeaker sound. He would relieve himself and continue to pull hard. Shortly after, he is brought to the assessment room and would remain social with the handler. He is then returned to his kennel with no issue. 10/17/25: Rusty is on leash in the yard with a staff member. He is pacing around and pulling hard towards other dogs as they pass the pen. 10/15/25: Rusty is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body as the handle approaches. As the handler is leashing him, Rusty headbutts the kennel door. The handler uses a squeaker, and as Rusty lifts his head, the handler leashes him. Rusty is then brought to the yard, where he relieves himself. When the playpen, he looks and sniffs around. The handler presents Rusty a treat, but he does not take it. Rusty then begins to sniff the handler as they sit on the bench. After a few minutes, the handler brings Rusty inside to the office. The handler keeps him on their leash; they drop treats on the ground which Rusty eats. Rusty then walks back and forth in the office, sniffing the ground. Another handler walks in the office, and Rusty presents a neutral body. He sniffs the other handler as well. The handler then brings out the office and returns Rusty to his kennel with ease. 10/14/25: Rusty is standing in the crate when handlers approach. He is not interested in treats tossed and after prolonger interaction, he growls. Handlers retreats and Rusty begins to eat the treats. One of the handlers climb into the van to attach a rope to the crate to assist in lifting out of the van. Rusty growls and tries to create distance. The crate is lifted out and rolled to the behavior office. Rusty takes treats from handlers hands and is double leashed for safety using treats as a lure. He walks to his kennel with tense body and tucked tail but goes into kennel without issue. He allows the hooks to be used to remove the leashes.

Date of intake:: 10/14/2025

Summary:: Growling towards handlers

Date of initial:: 10/14/2025

Summary:: Allowed muzzling, growled and snapped when body touched. Opted to sedate

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Rusty so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Rusty has been observed to maintain a tense body and tucked tail while interacting with handlers. He is noted to quickly escalate to snapping at handlers. It is important to move slowly with Rusty, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Rusty is obsvered to become tense and fixated on other dog while on leash. This behavior is not able to be redirected. Rusty will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
