Mr Nonchalant was surrendered to the care center as a stray, and we have no history on his behavior in a home environment. Mr Nonchalant has shown social and affiliative behavior with staff at the care center, but has also displayed anxiety, a low threshold for arousal, and has been highly reluctant to return to kennel. This has resulted in two bite incidents, where he has bitten and released handler's knees while attempting to escape the kennel, with neither bite breaking skin. Due to these concerns, we recommend placement with an experienced New Hope who can allow for decompression, provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based), and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is limited prior dog-dog history recorded. Mr. Nonchalant came into care with a female MMB. 10/27/26 Mr. Nonchalant is introduced to a novel female while off leash. He readily approaches the gate and will bounce around exuberantly. When meeting face to face, Mr. Nonchalant will approach and engage in mutual sniffing. The female greets exuberantly and he will approach to sniff multiple times but becomes overwhelmed by the female and disengages. 10/26/26 Mr. Nonchalant is introduced to a novel female while off leash. He readily approaches and greets exuberantly at the gate. Due to the female's discomfort, the interaction is kept to a gate greet.

Summary (7):: 11/3/26: Mr Nonchalant is reported to bite and release handlers knee when attempting to secure him in kennel. Canine Behavior member is walking down main B hallway and observes Mr Nonchalant loose in room A. Canine behavior member bent down in a crouched position and Mr Nonchalant runs towards them with a loose body. Handler does not have any of their equipment as they were about to leave for the day, handler continues petting Mr Nonchalant as he remains loose bodied and jumping on handler. Other handlers approach quickly and Mr Nonchalant is getting progressively more aroused. Main handler grabs his collar briefly and he mildly thrashes, handler releases collar and grabs someone's leash to place over his head. He is walked back to his kennel where he balks and retreats when reaching the kennel. Handler uses some mild leash pressure and he darts into kennel, whips around, lunges, and bites and releases handlers knee, then pushing past out the kennel. Handler stiff arms him and a secondary staff member tosses a plush toy into the kennel. Mr Nonchalant runs in and the door is closed, the leash is removed and the interaction ended. 10/27/26 (Playgroup): Mr Nonchalant was sitting on his bed as the handler approached. He was easily leashed and pulled mildly top kennel. Mr Nonchalant was brought to the play yard for playgroup. He is clipped to a drag leash and meets a novel female (see D2D for more information). Mt Nonchalant will approach and retreat from the female and will periodically jump on the other handler sin the space. Mr Nonchalant is easily re leashed and pulls strongly back to his kennel where he is safely returned. 10/26/26: Mr. Nonchalant is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and is then taken outside to the play yard for playgroup. In the yard, he greets the other dog at the gate with a neutral body and begins to have widened eyes. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues.

Summary:: Friendly

Date of initial:: 10/27/2026

Summary:: Loose and wiggly, high energy, tolerated all tasks/handling

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Mr. Nonchalant so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Mr. Nonchalant's bite history and the arousal and anxiety he has displayed in the care center, we recommend an adult only home or home with older children at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Mr Nonchalant has not acclimated well to the care center environment, and has been reluctant to return to kennel, resulting in two bite incidents. Due to these concerns, placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Anxiety,Strength/leash pulling,Low threshold for arousal,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners/poor impulse control | Low threshold for arousal: Mr Nonchalant has greeted handlers exuberantly, jumping up frequently. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Arousal and Basic Manners/Impulse Control. Anxiety: Mr. Nonchalant has appeared anxious at the care center, panting and pacing during his assessment. If Mr. Nonchalant displays anxious behavior in his future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. Strength/leash pulling: Mr Nonchalant has been observed to pull on the leash. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners. Bite history (human): Mr Nonchalant is reported to have bitten two handlers on the knee when trying to push back out of kennel while being returned. Both incidents were bite and releases that did not break skin. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression.
