Cruiser
Hello, my name is Cruiser. My animal id is #213437. I am a desexed male white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 10/30/2024.
Cruisier is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Cruiser is not acclimating well to the shelter environment and has begun to not want to go back to kennel, pancaking, thrashing on leash and alligator rolling, refusing to move when being coaxed back to kennel frequently. Cruiser is social with staff but is struggling despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Medically, Cruiser has dental disease.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. My #BoroughBreak Buddy Writes: Cruiser is patient, kind, and social. He loves leaf piles (walking on and lying on them) and he loves LOVES pets.

Summary:: Due to Cruiser entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded 11/06/24: When off leash at the Care Center Cruiser is introduced to a novel male dog. At the gate Cruiser approaches charging towards the gate. Cruiser hard barks and muzzle punches the gate in a play bow position. Cruiser's tail sways slowly back and forth. Cruiser is moved to the back of the pen to make space for the novel male to enter. Once in the pen Cruiser "hard pulls" towards towards the novel male. Once they greet face-to-face. As they scent one another Cruiser begins to grow stiff as his hackles rise. Cruiser stands on his hindlegs with the novel male doing the same, Cruiser proceeds to snap at the novel male and the two are immediately separated and taken out of the pens to avoid further stress. 11/01/24: When off leash at the Care Center Cruiser is introduced to a greeter female dog. At the gate approaches displacement scenting. Cruiser's hackles begin to rise before he begins hard barking with a flagging tail. Cruiser stays close to the gate offering a prey bow. Cruiser lips get flinch before they get real tight. Cruiser returns to consistently hard barking at the greeter female as he postures forward. Cruiser is escorted out of the pen to avoid further stress.
Summary (6):: 11/29/24: Cruiser is barking incessantly in kennel when the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Cruiser engages readily with the various enrichment items. However, when attempting to return him to kennel, Cruiser balks, thrashing and alligator rolling. Handler attempts to use treats to lure him in but he refuses. Handler uses leash pressure to quickly move him into kennel. Cruiser thrashes but does not attempt to exit once inside. 11/25/24: Cruiser is observed to be reluctant to go back to kennel by volunteers, and behavior staff step in to belly band and coax him back into kennel.
Summary (7):: 11/23/24: Cruiser is reported to put on the brakes with a volunteer when returning to kennel, a member of staff assists in guiding him back into kennel safely. 11/14/24: Cruiser was leashed with ease and walked to the BA room where he was clipped to a drag leash. Cruiser was loose bodied and appeared relaxed throughout interaction. He engaged in fetch with soft squeaker toys and tennis balls for some time. Cruiser would sit on cue for a treat and engaged in pattern games. Cruiser focused on a lick mat with spray cheese. He was returned to kennel with ease. 11/6/24: Handler tossed treat over top of kennel to move Cruiser away from door before leashing with ease. Cruiser exited the kennel room and rounded the corner where he encountered another dog at close proximity. Cruiser displayed on leash reactivity with raised hackles, barking, and lunging. Handler took Cruiser back inside kennel room momentarily where he recovered quickly and proceeded to the yard for a gate greet/interaction (see dog-dog summary.) Cruiser was returned to kennel with ease. 11/02/24: Cruise is standing at the front of his kennel with a neutral frame and will be leashed with ease and brought to the BT room for an assessment. While in the room, Cruise will be dressed with a drag leash and set free to roam the room. Cruise will display nervousness but also very social with handlers, demands attention and like to play with toys. Cruise will be brought back to his kennel safely.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 2
Recommendations:: No young children (under 5),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 5)- Due to Cruiser jumping and taking treats roughly we recommend he is placed in a home without young children. Single-pet home/recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors observed in playgroup and Cruiser's escalation towards another dog, we recommend for him to be the only dog in the home and not attend dog parks.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful,Anxiety
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control- Cruiser displays poor impulse control by jumping on handlers,These behaviors suggest a need for consistent training to improve her manners and impulse control. Using positive reinforcement and redirection will help manage these behaviors effectively. Please see handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition- Cruiser demonstrates poor bite inhibition during assessments, as he takes treats roughly, requiring them to be tossed rather than handed directly. This behavior suggests a lack of control or gentleness when taking treats from handlers. To address this issue, it's important to implement training exercises focused on teaching Cruiser to take treats gently, using positive reinforcement techniques. This may involve practicing "gentle" commands and rewarding him for softer mouth behavior. Please see handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Fearful/Anxiety- Cruiser has displayed flinching behavior when the assessor raised their arm/hands during the handling assessment. Cruiser has also displayed pacing and panting behavior in care.To help Cruiser overcome his fearfulness, use gradual desensitization and positive reinforcement. Identify the specific triggers that cause him fear and introduce them at a low intensity while pairing them with high-value treats. Gradually increase the intensity of the trigger while ensuring Cruiser remains comfortable. This process will help him build positive associations with previously fearful stimuli. Always allow Cruiser to approach new situations at his own pace, and never force him into uncomfortable situations. Using a calm and patient approach will help reduce his fearfulness and build his confidence. Please see the handout on Decompression period & generalized anxiety.
