He does not initially take high-value treats (chicken breast, sliced cheese, spray cheese) and paces around the room. He does approach the assessor when they are seated on the couch, offering a quick wiggle. They are unable to remove his original collar while he is sniffing the spray cheese. Blue R. shakes off after the collar is removed. When attempting to dress him with a martingale collar, Blue R. begins whale eyeing while backing away from the handlers, quickly moving to the exit. Due to his fearfulness and wariness, he is returned to the kennel, and a handling assessment is not conducted. 6/21: A handling assessment is not conducted due to Blue Raspberry receiving a medical exam. He was noted to be fearful and is given more time to decompress.

Summary (6):: 08/01/2026 (Trainer Note): Blue Raspberry is at the front of kennel with a tense body as handler approaches. He does not take treats or cheese through the kennel door. The first handler is using plush toys to distract him while second handler feeds another toy through the leash. He is leashed and removed from kennel. As he comes out, he intensely kennel fights and handler has to pull him away. As he is walked out to the yard he remains tense with a high stiff tail. He darts around with sudden quick movements towards both handlers. One handler has to continuously toss toys while the other has a stiff arm on the leash. Blue Raspberry will briefly chase after the toys but will only engage with them for a couple seconds before hyper fixating on both handlers. In the pen he licks cheese off the plastic tub and eats treats being tossed into the tub. He continues to be tense bodied. As he is being returned to kennel, he begins to wobble and handler loosens leash pressure, he immediately looks up towards the sky in attempt to leash bite. He pulls incredibly hard back to kennel while handler keeps him straight armed. 08/01/26: It is reported that during the evening shift on 07/29, Blue Raspberry displayed significant leash biting and was difficult to leash in general. He would only be refocused for short bursts with a toy but as handlers would attempt to quickly lure him through the rope, he would drop the toy and begin to leash bite. Handlers said they used at least six toys in an attempt to remove him and eventually were able to distract him by continuously squeaking a squeaker at the corner of kennel and quickly leash him.

Summary (7):: 8/1/26: Blue Raspberry is observed to be intensely tugging at the leash and leash biting in kennel with a canine rep. When the canine behavior handler approaches, he begins to jump up at the door with open mouth while constantly barking and trying to grab the handler’s leash. He is able to jump down and then the handler’s attempt to leash him while using a toy through the leash. He is able to grab the toy, but then he intensely tugs it out of the handler's hand and then goes to grab the leash again after being leashed. He then begins tugging at the leash again, and the handler drops it and closes the door. He continues to hold the leash and begins to flip it around. He is able to drop the leash, and it falls off his head when the handler offers more treats. The handler then locks the door and ends interaction. 07/20/26(BA note): Blue Raspberry is standing at the front of his kennel and allows the handler to leash him with ease. He is brought to the assessment room, where he accepts treats while allowing the handler to place a drag leash and collar on him. He remains focused on the treats while the secondary handler performs handling, which he tolerates well. He completes the run portion without becoming aroused and does not respond to the knock stimulus. While waiting for the toy to be tossed, Blue Raspberry begins leash biting with the primary handler. For more information, see Behavioral Assessment. 07/14/26: Blue Raspberry is at the front of her kennel as the handler approaches. She jumps up onto the kennel door, but is otherwise leashed with ease and brought outside to the yard. She pulls hard both on the way to the yard and in the yard itself. She will engage briefly with various toys, then pull towards the boundaries of the yard to sniff. After a few minutes, she is brought back inside without issue. 07/05/26: Blue Raspberry is laying down on his bed as the handler approaches. He comes to the front of the kennel and is leashed with ease. Blue Raspberry pulls hard while walking both outside and throughout the building. While on his walk, Blue Raspberry sniffs and spends most of the time at the end of the leash. He pulls randomly towards things he is interested in. After his walk, he is returned to kennel with no issue.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Blue Raspberry is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Blue Raspberry has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity | Fearful: Blue Raspberry is reported to be fearful of being held or restrained. He is reported to bark and growl. He has been fearful and avoidant of interaction with handlers. It is important to respect Blue Raspberry's social cues and to always go slow and give him the option to walk away from any social interaction. Blue R. should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be his choice to approach a new person or thing. Blue R. may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Please see handouts on handling/touch sensitivity and decompression period. Anxiety: Blue Raspberry appears anxious at the care center, panting, pacing, and is unable to settle or readily focus during his assessment. We have no history of his behavior in a home environment, so we do not know if this will occur outside of the care center. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement and force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety. Leash-biting | Low threshold for arousal: At the end of his handling assessment, Blue R. began jumping up and biting his drag leash. Handlers were able to redirect him with treats and a toy.
