Pumpkin
Hello, my name is Pumpkin . My animal id is #239340. I am a female brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 10/15/2025.
Pumpkin needs at risk placement for medical reasons. She is a sweet, mature dog with a vaginal mass that is causing her to strain to urinate and defecate. She needs advanced imaging and a consultation with a surgeon to treat her condition. Behaviorally she is a social and sweet dog and has allowed all handling.

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Meet Pumpkin! Found as a stray and brought to ACC, Pumpkin has charmed everyone with her wiggly greeting, soft eyes, and cuddle-seeking ways. She's a volunteer favorite who soaks up affection, enjoys her walks, and settles sweetly after her adventures. My Ideal Home I'm an affectionate companion who will thrive with adopters who can provide daily walks, sniffaris, and easy enrichment like food puzzles and long-lasting chews. A calm, consistent routine and gentle training will help me shine as the loving sidekick I'm meant to be. Good with Kids? Best with older, dog-savvy kids/teens. I can get enthusiastic for treats and am learning softer manners, so little ones under 5 aren't the best fit right now. Good with Other Pets? On walks I've been neutral to other dogs and focused on my handler. We don't have a history with cats or in-home dog intros, so slow, thoughtful introductions are recommended. Leash Manners I walk with a mostly loose leash and a happy trot, with a mild pull when something smells interesting. I check in nicely and love earning treats-just remind me to take them gently as I practice my best manners. Overall Health I arrived underweight and with a vaginal mass/prolapse and some urinary bleeding. I'm comfortable, being monitored, and currently on antibiotics; I'll need follow-up vet care (including spay and likely surgical treatment). The team will go over everything with you. Behavior Determination Experienced Adopters (Level 2): I'm social and sweet with shelter friends, with occasional hard treat-taking that improves with guidance. A home that reinforces calm, reward-based training will set me up for success.

[Spay/Neuter Waiver - Permanent] Your newly adopted pet has been diagnosed with (VAGINAL MASS ) and the staff veterinarians are issuing a PERMANENT waiver from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY. ACC does not have the facility to safely sterilize your pet with his/her current condition. However, your veterinarian will provide consultation on whether this procedure can or should be performed under their supervision. Follow up care at your regular veterinarian is recommended to ensure continued treatment and proper oversight of your pet's health. All costs for follow up care and subsequent surgery is at the expense of the adopter.

Summary:: 10/22/25: Pumpkin does not greet the other dog at the gate. She constantly seeks handler attention and can not be coaxed forward.
Summary (7):: 10/30/25: Pumpkin is loose bodied at front of kennel, handler unlocks kennel door, she is easily leashed and picked up from top kennel, if soft bodied when carried and placed on ground. Pumpkin walks out of MACC with loose body, mostly loose leash. As rain and wind begin to increase intensity, Pumpkin walks a bit slower, beside handler but maintains pace. Pumpkin is loose bodied when being pet, briefly jumps up on handler with soft body when being pet. Pumpkin takes treats from handler gently, checks in visually when verbally cued. Pumpkin re-enters MACC, is easily lifted into top kennel without issue, takes treats dropped in. 10/23/25: Pumpkin is at the front of her kennel with a loose, wiggly body. The handler is able to leash, carry, and place Pumpkin on the ground with ease. On the street, Pumpkin walks ahead of the handler with light tension on leash, occasionally stops to relieve herself. During the walk, she shows no interest in passersby and does not react to dogs in her sight. For a brief moment, Pumpkin jumps on the handler with a loose body, consistently sniffing their treat pouch. Upon return, the handler is able to clip their leash, and then pick up and return Pumpkin to her kennel, all with ease. 10/17/25- Pumpkin is at the front of her kennel with a loose and wiggly body, she is easily leashed. She is very wiggly when attempting to pick up but she allows you to remove her from the top kennel. She is taken for a street walk. She walks on a loose leash with a mild pull towards various spots to sniff. She is social with handler and takes treats with a hard pressure. When people pass her she has a slight pull towards them with a soft body, when dogs pass she just looks then disengages on her own. She is taken for an assessment where a treat lure was used to collared. She focuses on sniffing around the room seeking treats. Handler calls to her but she keeps on sniffing around. She is easily releashed and returned to top kennel without issue.
Date of intake:: 10/15/2025
Summary:: Loose body leans into pets, flinches with fast movements, allows leashing and vax and enters kennel
Date of initial:: 10/16/2025
Summary:: Wiggly and seeking attention. Very food motivated.
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Pumpkin so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 2
Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)
Recommendations comments:: No Young Children (Under 5): Due to Pumpkin taking treats with hard pressure and poor bite inhibition, we recommend a home with no young children.
Potential challenges: : Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition
Potential challenges comments:: Mouthiness/Poor Bite Inhibition: During her assessment, handlers noted Pumpkin takes treats with hard pressure. This is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Pumpkin's teeth make contact with skin). Please see handout on Mouthiness.
