Mama Bear
Hello, my name is Mama Bear. My animal id is #236592. I am a female black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/12/2025.
Mama Bear is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Mama Bear in the care center has not been acclimating despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. In her kennel, Mama Bear can be seen and heard digging at her kennel door. When handlers go to check on her, she often stops digging and begins to wag her tail. At other times, she is observed panting while standing on the door and continuing to dig, and she begins barking when she sees handlers approach. She has also been noted scaling her kennel walls and panting heavily when approached. During her stay, she has begun to kennel fight when exiting her kennel and has become reactive towards dogs while on walks. Mama Bear is social with staff but continues to struggle to settle and acclimate in the care center environment. Medically, Mama Bear is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

[Spay/Neuter Waiver - Temporary] Your newly adopted pet has a laceration and the staff veterinarians are issuing a TEMPORARY waiver from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY. Follow up care at your regular veterinarian is recommended to ensure continued treatment through to the resolution of the issue. At the time of a full recovery you may choose to have your veterinarian perform the spay/neuter surgery, or make provisions to return the pet to ACC for sterilization.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 10/12/25 Mama Bear is introduced at the gate to a female dog while off leash at the care center. Mama Bear approaches the gate exuberantly, appearing highly aroused displaying wide-dilated eyes and raised hackles. What starts off as alert barking, Mama Bear will begin to hard bark, displaying a hard face and tense body. Once she begins to muzzle punch the gate slightly, she is moved away from the gate in order to decompress before heading back to kennel. This concludes the interaction. 09/14/25 Mama Bear is introduced at the gate top a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Mama Bear will approach the gate with a neutral frame, appearing slightly nervous as she walks away to displace, sniffing away from the gate. Mama Bear displays paw raises from a distance while displaying whale eyes. She maintains her distance from the gate for the remainder of her time. This concludes the interaction.
Summary (6):: 10/21/25 Mama Bear is standing on her kennel door with a waging tail as the handler approaches. Mama Bear is easily leashed and as she exits her kennel, attempts to pull towards her neighboring kennel. Mama Bear is easily directed out of the room with directional leash pressure. Mama Bear is taken outside for a walk. Mama Bear displays a still, neutral frame as she trots moderately beside the handler maintaining a relaxed pace. Mama Bear will take treats gently when administered and will allow petting as she leans in. Mama Bear will go for a lengthy walk and eventually be returned to the facility, entering the building with no issue. Before approaching her kennel room, she will attempt to pull into another kennel room with a tense body as she is walking by but with directional leash pressure, the handler keeps her on a steady pace on their way to the kennel room. Before entering her kennel, will pull towards her neighboring kennel but is quickly redirected into her kennel. 10/19/25: Mama Bear is standing at the front of her kennel, hard barking and jumping as the handler arrives. She allows leashing and is escorted outside for an enrichment walk. While out, she demonstrates heavy panting and strong leash pulling while scanning her surroundings and sniffing the environment. When offered a treat, she demonstrates a successful “sit” cue and is rewarded. Upon completion of the session, Mama Bear is escorted back to the Care Center and returned to her kennel safely without any issues.
Summary (7):: 10/12/25: Mama Bear is at the front of her kennel with a slightly tense body as she jumps onto the kennel door as the handler approaches. She will get off the door and take a treat through the loop as the handler leashes her. She comes out of her kennel pulling hard as they walk down the hallway. Outside, Mama Bear will pull moderately, remaining vigilant as dogs pass them. The handler keeps Mama Bear at a distance from other dogs and will toss treats on the ground every time she turns her head towards the dogs. Mama Bear begins to refocus her attention towards the handler when other dogs pass, occasionally disengaging on her own. As they walk closer to the Care Center Mama Bear is less likely to disengage, as there is not enough distance between her and other dogs. She lunges and vocalizes as a dog is walked too close to the ramp where the handler and Mama Bear are. Mama Bear pulls moderately to her kennel and she is secured safely with no issue. 10/11/25: Mama bear is noted to kennel fights when leaving her kennel and will lunge towards other dogs while on walks. 10/09/25: Mama Bear is heard screeching, scaling her kennel door and barking incessantly during the quiet hours. 9/30/25: Mama Bear could be seen and heard digging at her kennel door. When handlers go to check on her, she stops digging and begins to wag her tail. 09/30/25: Mama Bear is standing on her hind legs at the front of her kennel, demand barking as the handler leashes her. She is then escorted to the play yard where a drag leash is placed on her. Mama Bear explores the yard calmly, maintaining a neutral frame. When toys are offered, she shows no interest, instead focusing on watching dogs pass by on the street, but without reacting. At the end of the session, Mama Bear is returned to her kennel safely without any issues. 9/29: Mama Bear could be seen and heard digging at her kennel door. When handlers go to check on her, she is panting while standing on the door still digging. She begins barking when she sees the handlers. 9/15/25: (1) Mama Bear is observed to be scaling her kennel walls and panting heavily when approached in kennel. (2) It is noted on the board that Mama Bear does not want to return to the kennel. A handler brings her to the behavior office to give her a short break from her kennel. In the office, she explores the room and takes treats before jumping on the couch and playing next to the handler, placing her head into their lap. Mama Bear will sit up and nudge the handler's hands for more petting. She then stress yawns, and jumps off the couch to shake off. She jumps onto the kuranda bed in the office and eats the treats on there before returning to the couch to lie down next to the handler again. Mama Bear briefly dozes in the handler's lap. She wakes up when she hears a loud noise outside the office. Now that she is awake, the handler walks her back to her kennel. Mama Bear balks near her kennel but walks in with treats and coaxing.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We reccomend Mama Bear be placed in an adult-only home at this time.
Potential challenges: : Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Kennel presence
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Mama Bear is a bit fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give her the option to walk away from any social interaction. Mama Bear should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be her choice to approach a new person or thing. Mama Bear would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. Please see the handout on Decompression Period. Kennel Presence / Anxiety: Mama Bear has shown signs of anxiety and stress in the kennel environment. She was observed screeching, scaling her kennel door, barking incessantly, and digging at the door. These behaviors suggest a high level of distress and a need for calming enrichment, a predictable routine, and low-pressure interactions to help her feel more secure. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety. On-Leash Reactivity / Barrier Frustration: In the care center, Mama Bear has exhibited kennel fighting when exiting her kennel and becomes reactive on leash toward other dogs during walks. This includes barking, lunging, and growling, indicating barrier frustration and heightened arousal. Behavior modification through counterconditioning and structured leash work may help reduce reactivity and improve her focus. Please see the handout on On-Leash Reactivity / Barrier Frustration.
