[Spay/Neuter Waiver - Age] It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. Summary:: 12/13/25: Buddy Bori greets another dog at the gate with a neutral body and rapidly wagging tail. Off leash he attempts to mount.

Summary (7):: 12/14/25: Buddy Bori was lying down in the crate when entering the office. Upon approach, he sits up with his tail wagging and tip-tapping. When opening the crate he walks out and shakes his body, walks to the door gate, and waits for the handler to attach the leash. When opening the door, he leads the way out of the hallways to the front lobby and main entrance. He immediately finds his spot to urinate, and then is calm on the walk with little to no leash tension. Sometimes he walks ahead of the handler, then he slows down to walk side-by-side or sniff around. We walk around the corner of the block and he urinates a few more times and defecates. After returning him to the office and letting him loose in the room, he has more energy to play and enjoys ripping out the filling and squeaker from the plush toy. 12/11/25: Buddy Bori is at the front of his crate with a soft body. He is easily leashed and brought out the crate. On the street, Buddy Bori walks with no leash tension. He stops to relieve himself. Buddy sees other dogs ahead but doesn’t react to them. He also allows small pets. The handler clips their leash and returns Buddy Bori to his crate. 12/2/25: Buddy Bori is at the front of his kennel with a soft body. As the handler attempts to leash him, he dodges the leash many times. Once he is leashed, he is easily brought out the room. On the street, Buddy Bori walks ahead of the handler with no leash tension, frequently stopping to sniff and relieve himself. After the walk, Buddy Bori is brought inside for his assessment (see assessment notes). After the assessment, the handler brings Buddy Bori to his kennel; he briefly baulks, but then enters on his own.

Date of intake:: 12/1/2025

Summary:: Allowed handling, loose and wiggly

ENERGY LEVEL:: Buddy is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Buddy.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to handling sensitivity and fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: Destructive Behavior: Buddy's previous owner states that he is destructive in the home. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Buddy will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so they can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Basic Manners: Buddy's previous owner states that he will jump up for attention. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Handling Sensitivity/ Fearful Defensive: Buddy's previous owner states that he will snap when his paws are touched. It is also stated that he is fearful when startled and will run away when they attempted to give him a bath. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Buddy to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity and Fearful and Defensive Behavior. Separation Anxiety: Buddy's previous owner states he will become anxious when left alone. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and be prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. They would do best in a home where a person is home for a large part of the day or with a plan so they are not alone for long periods of time. Please see handout on Separation Anxiety. Leash Pulling: Buddy's previous owner states that he will pull hard while on leash. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage, and that they be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
