Animal Profile

Peaches

Hello, my name is Peaches. My animal id is #210252. I am a desexed female brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 3 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/30/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person health - medical.

Peaches is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Peaches has been observed to be fearful during her stay in the care center. Noted to be uncomfortable during handling and interactions with handlers. Peaches has been observed to become tense and freeze when interacting with handlers, she is also noted to baulk while on leash. She has shown some improvement and is neutral with select handlers walking her but remains uncomfortable with further attempts of interactions. Peaches also has a history of escalating to snapping and growling when fearful. In her previous home Peaches was observed to snap at a resident dog, this bite did break skin and did cause bleeding. Medically, Peaches has early dental disease but is otherwise currently healthy.

I need a home where there are no other dogs. I am finding the shelter a bit overwhelming. Outside one-on-one I am a great big cuddle bug. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy! Previous Owner stated: "What can I say about peaches Well she is just that a peach. She is a very sweet girl. She loves playing with her stuffed animals and her toys. She sometimes may get a little rambunctious, but with training she is smart and a quick learner. She-is glued to her personal. She has a great appetite and she eats like a lady. She also loves snacks and takes them gently. She knows how to use a wee-wee pad in case of an emergency She is a love bug. She does not like cats or squirrels 🐿️ she will chase after them in the yard. She would do best in a home with no other animals. I love that girl to the moon and back."

At the gate Peaches approaches cautiously displacement sniffing. Peaches reaches the gate with a fully tucked tail. Peaches scents the novel male with slight and stiff tail wags. Peaches walks away and begins displacement scenting again. MACC: 12/17/24: Peaches greets another dog at the gate with a neutral body. She stretches her face forward to sniff then moves away. She reproaches with handler coaxing then disengages.

Summary (4):: 12/20/24- Peaches is at the front of her kennel with a soft body, she is easily leashed. She is taken for a street walk, she walks on loose leash only towards spots to sniff. She has no reaction to any people passing her and is aloof with handler. Handler offers her a treat but she shows no interest. When walking back to the building there is a dog on the other side of the street, she perks up and pulls walking straight when she sees the other dog between the cars. She isn't vocal when she looks. The MOP and dog crossed onto handler's side of street, Peaches and handler stopped walking as they walked ahead of them. Peaches kept watching the dog and handler gave a slight tug, Peaches followed the handler to cross the street. She was easily clipped and she was a little hesitant to enter her kennel room, handler tossed treats down and she slowly followed back in. She went into her kennel without issues. 12/5/24: Peaches is standing at the center of her kennel as handler approaches. She is leashed without issue and brought to the street for her walk, during which she walks alongside handler without pulling. She walks past people on the street without issue and after walking for a while is brought to the behavior office for an assessment. During her assessment Peaches accepts some treats but is not easily distracted, she is very hesitant to allow collaring and petting but eventually tolerates it after multiple attempts. She will flinch whenever movement occurs around her head and neck area and freezes in place when being pet. She is slowly re-leashed and returns to kennel. When at the front of her kennel she stops but handler produces treats and tosses them into kennel which helps coax her into kennel without further issue. 11/30/24: Peaches is sniffing the ground as she approaches the shelter with her foster. Foster offers to place the slip lead on Peaches as she can be wary of strangers. The leash is on and handed over to staff member as peaches is distracted. Peaches follows handler into the building while sniffing the ground. She baulks outside of the kennel refusing to move. Handler resets and places some pressure on the leash leading her into the kennel. She allows the hook to be used to remove the leash. Previous stay at ACC:

Peaches is attempted to be coaxed, and looks at the handler with a neutral body, sniffing the handler but is aloof for the interaction. Peaches is brought back to her kennel after a long walk with no issue. 09/25/24: Peaches is standing in the middle of kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. She readily approaches the door and begins pawing at the lead as handler attempts to leash her. Handler's leash loops around her body so they use a second lead to loop around her neck and let the first lead fall off on its own. Peaches walks with a neutral body to the Canine Behavior Office. She spends time scenting around the room and will approach a second handler and sniff them with a light tail wag. Peaches licks a bit of squeeze cheese off of the counter before resuming scenting. Peaches is walked back to kennel and allows handler to pet her twice as she is scenting something in the hall. Peaches is returned to kennel safel

Due to Peaches not being collared, handler keeps her on a loose leash and allows her to investigate the yard on her own terms. Peaches spends the entire time in the yard scenting, and will briefly sniff handler's arm as she walks past where they are kneeling in the grass. Handler clips their lead into a figure 8 and Peaches is returned to kennel safely. (AM): Peaches' behavior continues to be stable and consistent. For further information, please see the previous note from 09/21/24. 9/23/24 (PM): Peaches approached handler at front of kennel and was leashed with ease. She was leashed with ease and walked to the BA room, passing a dog in a crate without reacting. Once in the room, Peaches was aloof and kept her nose to the floor sniffing around. Peaches did not eat chicken jerky but favored chicken breast. Handlers were able to gain her attention with chicken breast but Peaches did not otherwise solicit contact. While handler was out of the room Peaches was reportedly pacing and eventually stopped eating treats. Handler clipped her leash to a figure 8 while she was distracted scratching herself and she was returned to kennel with ease. 09/22/24 Peaches is at the front of her kennel barking at the handler's feet as they approach. Peaches stops as the kennel door is being unlocked. Peaches is leashed with no issue and taken for a walk. Peaches displays a still, n neutral body while walking moderately beside the handler. Summary:: Tense body for exam. Resists restraint

ENERGY LEVEL:: Peaches is described as medium energy. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Peaches.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Peaches displays fearful behavior due to this we recommend she is placed in an adult-only home at this time. No Cats: Due to hard barking, growling, and lunging towards cats we recommend a home with no cats. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to hard barking, growling, lunging and snapping towards familiar dogs we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Bite history (dog)

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/handling/touch sensitivity- in the care center Peaches displays growling from in the kennel, very scared and shaking during exams but allowed all medical handling. In the care center, she displays fearful behavior growling, and hard barking. To help Peaches feel more secure and reduce her fearful and defensive behaviors, create a quiet, comfortable area where she can retreat when overwhelmed. Gradually desensitize her to being handled by starting with brief, gentle touches and using positive reinforcement. Avoid triggers like sudden movements, loud noises, direct eye contact, and sudden approaches. Pair potentially scary experiences, such as medical handling, with something positive like a favorite treat, and establish a consistent daily routine to provide stability. Utilize calming aids like pheromone diffusers, calming music, or anxiety wraps, and consider working with a professional dog trainer or behaviorist for personalized guidance. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression & handling/touch sensitivity. Bite History (Dog): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression.
