Animal Profile

Susu

Hello, my name is Susu. My animal id is #202593. I am a desexed female brown tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 3 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 6/14/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person health - medical.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Susu is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. She is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for his/her mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid (further) bite/scratch incidents.

Susu tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. A volunteer writes: We've been trying our best to keep up with Susu's creativity and she's been nothing but patient with us as we try. When I first met Susu she hopped out of her box (cut specifically to the requested dimensions, of course) and welcomed me with the unabashed joy and friendliness of a baby kitten. Hopping this way and that, she gave a jubilant tour of her condo - blankets here, food over there, and, hopping back into her box for emphasis, box over here! Susu was brought to us due to her person's health and we know that she's very much an activities based cat. With her previous family, she loved to chase after bugs and find and fetch stray bottle caps. Susu may not love to be held, but she's a cat with a job - bottle caps, bugs, and toys. We can't really expect a cat with her schedule to pause everything just to be carried around. Her previous person explained that Susu likes to take the lead when it comes to cuddles and what I've seen at the shelter is when it's time, it's definitely time! Susu leaned her whole side into me like it was a mandatory requirement before hopping back into her box. She's full of hope, love, and good ideas. The only thing she's missing is you!

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 6/21/24 FB58 Laying at back of cage with a slightly tense face and body, vocalizes and appears interested in the dry treats I leave at the front but is wary. She continues to wind back and forth behind her kuranda bed legs and rubbing along them forcefully with her head as she vocalizes. When the tool is offered, she also head bunts and rubs her cheeks and sides along the tool but remains tense and wary of intentional pets. 6/26/24 FB58 Vocalizing and curious, comes towards the front of the cage and cannot stay still and allows touch with the tool through the cage door as she walks past and rubs against it. When I come back and meet with her again a few minutes later, she remains equally as active but tenses when the tool touches her and whips her head back at times and hisses. Shows signs of high energy and overstimulation at this time. 7/2/24 FB79 Today, Susu displayed very similar behaviors from the previous enrichment note. 7/10/24 FB79 Laying in her bed, Susu stands with a high tail and meows when she hears me speak. She continues to vocalize as i open the kennel door and she harshly head bunts my hand as she runs her body along my hand and arm continuously. She eats some treats then returns to harshly lean into my body for more attention; she allows all pets with lots of energy! 7/16/24 FB58 Susu is showing consistent signs of overstimulation at this time. Susu does not need socialization, these behaviors are likely to continue in a home environment and this is not an indication that Susu is under socialized. They are a very smart and curious cat who may be sensitive to hands-on stimuli. They will need plenty of playtime and mental stimulation in their new home.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Social,Shy ,Sweet,Playful,People oriented,Curious,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Fearful,Uncomfortable with pick up,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Does not like to be picked up or held. Will stress meow or attempt to swat. About 3 months ago Susu had a close encounter to biting/nipping a visitor in the home was seeking Susu's attention to pet her. Instead, Susu scratched the visitor but did not break skin. Susu continues to display signs of overstimulation throughout interactions, passing quickly underneath the scratcher tool with her tail swishing back and forth and vocalizing, turning to look back at the tool and at times turning to swipe at the tool.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Susu would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment. She has experience with children ages 4-13yrs and is curious around them. Susu will actively avoid when she no longer wants the children's attention and has the tendency to swat to be left alone.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 7/18/24: On approach, Susu is at the back of her cage with eyes wide and dilated, ears forward. She hisses and sniffs the tool with a low and tense body, wary of the tool but is tolerant of some pets with the scratcher tool. She arches up into the touch briefly and rubs her cheek along the leg of the kuranda bed before turning and hissing at the tool and attempting to nip but not committing. She comes towards the front of the cage to sniff treats offered and again accepts more pets with the scratcher tool before turning to hiss with a tense body and face. She continues to show conflicted behavior and body language and pick up is not attempted at this time both due to this and to reports of being uncomfortable with pick up. 8/18/24: Upon re-eval, Susu is in her den and comes out on her own when the assessor speaks to her with her tail raised and face alert. The assessor offers the scratcher tool out and she sniffs it before rubbing her cheek and body along it and passing back and forth as she vocalizes with her tail moving quickly back and forth while it remains raised. Her fur along her back twitches and the assessor offers her some treats which she eats before removing the tool to prevent any further potential overstimulation or escalation. Pick up is not attempted. 9/16/24: Susu's behavior has been consistent for the past three months in shelter. She was lying down in loaf position at the front of the kennel with a neutral body and eyes. When spoken to and opening the door, she softly meows and gets up, rubbing her face on the walls as she walks into the cubby and turns around to the front of the kennel. She allows petting on the head but may tilt her ears and lower her head or dodge the assessor's hand. She walks in a circle towards the back of the kennel and her body twitches with the back of her fur slightly pilo-erect, displaying signs of overstimulation due to the attention from the assessor and the movement in the room. Her eyes become alert, but she is easily distracted and appreciate treats offered; however, she will dodge her head again when pet on the head or body. When attempting pick up, the assessor reaches around Susu's body and she retreats and hisses. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress. Susu calms down fairly quickly, sniffs the assessor's hand, and enjoys more treats offered. Susu tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
