Shanghai
Hello, my name is Shanghai. My animal id is #239386. I am a female brown brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 10/16/2025.
Shanghai is at risk due to behavioral reasons. When Shanghai arrived in care she was obsvered to be highly fearful. Noted to bark, growl, and lunge towards handlers. She was also obsvered to bark and pull towards other dogs. Overtime Shanghai was warmed up to handlers and allows handling. However, she is still noted to be fearful. Noted to walk with a low head, tail tucked and ears pinned while with handlers. Medically, Shanghai is currently healthy.

Decompression time, a cozy "safe spot," and positive-reinforcement training will help Shanghai feel secure. City noises can worry her, so quieter walking routes (or off-peak hours) are a plus. Good with Kids? No. Shanghai has displayed fearful behaviors and startle responses; she'll do best in an adult-only home where interactions can be managed thoughtfully. Good with Other Pets? Mixed signals in shelter. Through a fence she's offered play bows and mini zoomies, but in tight spaces and on leash she may bark/pull and can be hard to redirect. If considering dog-dog matches, plan on very slow, structured introductions after a full decompression period. For now, she may thrive as the only pet while she builds confidence. Leash Manners Walks with mild pulling; hypervigilant outside and can thrash or pull when startled by loud trucks or kennel room activity. Checks in for treats and will sit when asked. A front-clip harness, quiet routes, and "look at me" games will set her up for success. Other Fun Facts • Takes treats gently and will offer a polite sit when she's feeling safe • Brindle beauty with curious eyes who watches the world carefully • Once she warms up, you'll see soft tail wags and those tentative little "is it OK?" check-ins that melt your heart.

Summary:: 10/22/25: Shanghai greets another dog at the gate with tense body. When the other dog moves away, she follows him along the fence line and playbows. Off leash, she play bows, offers spin moves mini zoomies.
Summary (4):: 12/6/25: Shanghai is at the back of her kennel, curled up and sleeping as handler approaches. She then wakes up as she hears the handler standing in front. She would then slowly approach the front with a soft body and is easily leashed. She is then removed from kennel where she would alongside the handler and is taken for a street walk. She would walk slowly with the handler, with her head low and ears down. She would solicit pets from the handler with no issue and relieve herself in multiple spots. Shanghai would then spot a dog and quickly watch them with a neutral body, handler then calls her name in a soft voice directing her in the opposite direction which she readily follows. Shortly after, she is then brought back inside where she readily enters her kennel. 12/4/25: It has been noted on the whiteboard that Shanghai is "affectionate! So sweet, a bit nervous/fearful" on 12/4.
Summary (5):: 11/30: During walk with Volunteer in the park Shanghai was nervous/alert surrounding her so brought back her to ACC backyard play. She was running around, playful, chasing toys, would sit for treats. Showed sweet/wiggly side of her when she interacted with ACS staff, also got too excited would jump up in friendly manner. 11/25/25: Shanghai is at the back of the kennel sleeping, she wakes up, approaches the front and is easily leashed. Shanghai is walked slowly to the street where she walks with a lowered head and her ears drooping. When she sees a dog, Shanghai pulls hard towards the dog. She refuses to move and stays in a forward posture. Handler calls her away and she follows slowly. Handler tries to engage with Shanghai and she lowers her head and lip licks. Handler holds out their hand and she leans into brief petting under her chin. She is brought to the behavior office where she walks slowly around the room sniffing her surroundings. Eventually she approaches the handler sitting at the desk. She takes treats gently from the handler and lies down under the desk at the handlers feet. After awhile, Shanghai is returned to kennel without issue.
Summary (6):: 11/15/25: (LATE ENTRY)Shanghai is sitting quietly at the front of the kennel with a neutral body. She is easily leashed and slowly exits the kennel. She is taken downstairs to the street. Shanghai walks besides the handler with a loose leash, her tail is pressed against her and her ears pinned. She occasionally jumps at loud sudden sounds. Such as, random bangs, construction noises, and clanging from rolling carts. Shanghai takes treats gently and readily when offered. She walks slowly back to the shelter where she is returned to kennel without issue. 11/8/25: Shanghai jumps on her kennel door with a loose body as the handler approaches. The handler feeds Shanghai treats while leashing her; once leashed, the handler is able to bring her out the room. When walking out the building, Shanghai looks up at the handler repeatedly. On the street, Shanghai walks ahead of the handler with no leash tension. She has no interest in dogs she notices, and passersby as well. Shanghai also allows pets and eats treats given by the handler. When walking back to the building, Shanghai briefly increases leash tension. While riding the elevator, another handler gives her a treat, which she takes gently. The handler is able to clip their leash and return Shanghai to her kennel with ease. 11/3/25- Shanghai was at the front of her kennel with a soft body, she was easily leashed and when exiting the room Shanghai pulled towards the passing kennels while barking. While waiting for the elevator handler distracted her with treats so she won't go towards pop up crates. She is taken for a street walk where she is hypervigilant (tail tucked, looking around). WHen first exiting to the street Shanghai saw other dogs, she just sat and had a soft body and disengaged on her own. She is social with handler and gently takes treats. She just watches people walk by with a neutral body. When returning to the building she started to pull harder with her body low to the ground and ears pinned. There was a loud noise from a truck and Shanghai pulls harder and starts to thrash then goes back to pulling back. She was taken for her assessment and placed on a drag leash. She sniffed around the room and came to handler when called, gently taking mores treats. She was leashed and when returning again pulls towards the passing kennels but no vocalization this time. She goes into kennel without further issue. 11/3/25:It has been noted on the whiteboard that Shanghai is kennel reactive.
Summary (7):: 10/23/25: Shanghai is laying at the back of her kennel. Handler offers a treat through the bars and she comes forward quickly, neutral body and accepts the treat. She is easily leashed using the treat as a lure. Shanghai is walked on the street where she walks slow alongside handler. When handler stops walking she will stop. She checks in often with handler and will sit for treats. Another dog passes her on the sidewalks and she watches them, neutral, looks at handler when called and accepts a treat. When returning to the care center, another staff member is walking behind her. She scrambles forward, looking over her shoulders, head going side to side. She scrambles back to her kennel and goes in without issue. 10/19/25- Shanghai is at the middle of her kennel with a neutral body, handler softly talks to her and presents treats. She gently takes them then handler stops giving treats. Shanghai gets tense, lowers her head and quickly jumps on the door with a tense body and barking at handler. Handler has Shanghai sit and she follows the command then is rewarded. When handler unlocks her door she retreats to the back of the kennel, handler presents another treat and she comes to the front. She is easily leashed with a treat lure. She is taken for a street walk. She is hypervigilant (looking around, slight tense body with a tucked tail and pinned ears). She walks on a loose leash and will mildly pull when a noise startles her. Handler gently pets her head and she moves away. They offer treats and she gently takes them. She sniffs around and when people walk past she mildly pulls towards them with a neutral body to sniff them. Handler presents treats and she follows them. Handler slowly clips her and she pulls back to her kennel and goes in without issue. 10/19/25: ACS report that Shanghai is at the back of the kennel barking and vocalizing when the handler approaches. They are not able to leash him. Another different handler approaches and they were able to coax Shanghai to the front of the kennel and were able to take him out with no issue. 10/17/25: Shanghai is laying at the back of her kennel but comes forward with neutral body and soft wagging tail when handler approaches. She takes treats through the bars gently. Handler begins interacting with a neighboring dog and Shanghai growls and jumps on the kennel door. Handler offers her a treat and she softens and takes treats again. She is easily leashed and removed from kennel and walked in the yard. She remains neutral with soft tail. She is not interested in treats. She watches other dogs and attempts to approach when on the other side of the fence, tense body. She is not easily redirected. She is easily clipped and returned to kennel.
Date of intake:: 10/16/2025
Summary:: Growling and lunging
Date of initial:: 10/16/2025
Summary:: Tense and trembling inside of crate. Opted to sedate
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Shanghai so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to a high level of fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Shanghai has been observed to bark, growl, and lunge towards handlers when approached. It is important to move slowly with Shanghai, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: While in the kennel room Shanghai is obsvered to bark and pull towards the other dogs. Shanghai will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
