Animal Profile

Mallomar

Hello, my name is Mallomar . My animal id is #238090. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/29/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Mallomar is at risk due to behavior concerns. He arrived at the care centers as a stray with little known history. During intake he allowed all handling while muzzled. Through out at his stay at MAAC, he has displayed a low threshold for arousal, resource guarding, and frantic/anxious behavior. During his assessment, Mallomar grabbed several pillows and linens and began to shake them, then biting the plastic assessment hand when it was used to remove a toy. On walks he is highly anxious, often pacing, darting in all different directions, never settling, whining, and snapping at any sudden movement. He is somewhat treat motivated but takes them hard. Medically, he has CIRDC.

During behavior assessments, Mallomar grabbed several pillows and covers and shook them, and he bit an assessor's hand when it was used to remove a toy. He is highly anxious, moves quickly from place to place, and has difficulty settling. While he shows interest in treats, he takes them with a hard mouth. Mallomar would do best in an adult-only foster home through New Hope Partner, where caregivers can manage his behaviors using positive reinforcement.

Summary (5):: 10/12/25: Mallomar displays the same behaviors as of (10/9). Please refer to those notes.

Summary (6):: 10/9/2025 (Trainer Note): Mallomar is standing on his hind legs whilst high pitched barking with dilated pupils as handler approaches. A treat is used as a lure to leash him. As he is removed he springs out and pulls hard out of the room. He is taken to the yard for a walk. Handler attempts to put him on long line but due to his sudden and frantic movements, along with the snapping heard as he chases after the balls on the floor, handler keeps him on leash. He frantically mouths one ball at a time but continuously changes which one he has in his mouth. Handler walks him around the yard several times and returns him to kennel. 10/6/25: Mallomar is at the front of the kennel jumping up when the handler approaches. He is leashed using a treat lure and he is brought to the yard. While in the yard Mallomar is placed on a dragline and relieves himself quickly. The handler offers a tennis ball and Mallomar begins to engage in a game of trade. Mallomar will demand bark at the handler and is also observed to jump towards their hands and snap. When the handler attempts to releash Mallomar he head whips towards their hand with an open mouth. The handler attempts to redirect him using a treat and they are able to releash him. Mallomar is returned to kennel with no further issue. 10/5/25: Mallomar is observed to snap at the secondary handlers hands, treat pouch, and poop dispenser while they are in the yard. When sudden movements are made Mallomar will jump towards the handler and snap at them making contact. 10/4/25: Mallomar is standing at the front of his kennel as handlers approach. He begins jumping at the door as the handler unlocks it. He is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats. He then pulls hard frantically on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, he would continue to pull hard ahead and zig zag back and forth. He would hard stare with a tense body at people close by and far away. He is comfortable taking treats and would hard stare and try to pull towards dogs. He pulls hard frantically on the way back to his kennel.

Summary (7):: 10/02/25: Mallomar is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is offered treats and accepts them but only takes pieces of them and spits out the rest. When unlocking the kennel he spins in circles and jumps on the kennel door, he continues this while leashing making it difficult to leash him but he eventually allows leashing. He is removed from kennel and pulls hard out to the street for his walk. While outside handler has to keep him on a short leash due to his pulling. When hearing people and dogs he will turn and briefly fixate on them but loses interest shortly after. He walks past people without issue and walks for a while with handler. He relieves himself during his walk and stops to sniff frequently. After a while he is brought back inside, he lip licks when handler clips his leash but returns to kennel without issue. 10/1/25: Mallomar is standing at the front of his kennel with a neutral body as the handler approaches. As the handler unlocks the kennel, Mallomar begins to spin around in his kennel, and as the handler attempts to leash him, he jumps up on the kennel door repeatedly. The handler uses a treat as a lure, but he is abled to be leashed without it. The handler brings him out the room. Mallomar pulls forward outside. He immediately relieves himself, and as he relieves himself, another dog is nearby. Mallomar keeps his attention on the dog until it passes by, but does not react to it. During the street walk, Mallomar walks ahead of the handler with tension on the leash, pulling forward. He occasionally stops to sniff around. Once he relives himself and the handler cleans up after him, Mallomar focuses on a dog in the distance. The handler is able to continue the walk. Mallomar does not pay attention to any passersby. Before entering the shelter, a staff member walks past. When Mallomar sees them, he backs away. The handler then gently pulls him to continue walking into the building. He is brought inside for assessment. Before the assessment starts, Mallomar frantically jumps on the couch and bites and shakes the cushions. The assessor removes the cushions, but he continues to jump on the couch and pull the linens. He also snaps at the handler's hand when they went to take him from the assessor. Mallomar fixates on a toy given to him and when the leashes are swapped, he lunges for the toy again (SEE ASSESSMENT NOTES). The handler clips their leash and returns them with ease.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Malligator so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Mallomar's low threshold for arousal and resource guaridng, Mallomar should go to a home with older children. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to behaviors displayed in the shelter, Mallomar should go to a New Hope Partner.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Mallomar bit the assess a hand during the toy portion of his assessment. Nothing should take anything out of his mouth and he should learn the trade game using positive reinforcement. Pease see the handout on Resource Guarding. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition/Low threshold for arousal: Mallomar grabbed treats and toys with hard pressure showing lack of bite inhibition. While in the behavior room, he has shown a low threshold for arousal. Positive reinforcement should be used to teach Mallomar impulse control. Please see the handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition and Low threshold for arousal.
