Pre-Screener Form Buddy is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Buddy in care has not been acclimating well to the shelter environment despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Buddy has began to leash bite in kennel, and out of kennel on walks, mouth and mount staff members making it difficult to walk him safely. Medically, Buddy is apparently healthy. Buddy was brought in as a stray so his past behaviors in a home is unknown. In the Care Centers, Buddy has displayed a low threshold for arousal. He was reported to mouth, mount and bite staff leashes. Buddy is treat motivated and engages in training such as the 123 game to help with impulse control but overtime the stress of the shelter has made it difficult to manage him. Recently, he was reported to lunge at the kennel door when staff placed their hands on it. Buddy will need an adult only home through a New Hope Partner that will manage his behaviors using positive reinforcement. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. I have been known to shower my favorite people in love! I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy!

Summary:: Due to Buddy entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 02/13/25: When off leash at the Care Center Buddy is introduced to a novel male dog. At the gate Buddy  approaches pulling with a stiff frame. Buddy fixates on the novel male with a flagging tail. Buddy's tail grows ridget and a knot forms. Both dogs are separated from the gate, concluding their interaction. Due to Buddys discomfort a face to face greet was not conducted. 02/10/25 Buddy is introduced to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Buddy doesn't greet when approaching the gate, charging it instead, tense and muscular. He begins to hard bark at the novel male dog, snarling in the process. Buddy is moved away from the gate, being returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. 02/06/25 Buddy is introduced to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Prior to entering the pens, Buddy attempts to mount handler. Buddy is immediately sexually motivated, jumping onto the gate, loose and wiggly. Buddy will mark in the novel female dog's direction and spread his scent. Buddy will track the novel female dog as she moves away. Buddy is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

Summary (6):: 3/10: ACS staff report that when standing by Buddy's kennel, when they placed their hand on the kennel glass to lean for a brief moment, Buddy body slammed the kennel door. When the handler turned to check on Buddy to make sure he was fine after his slamming, he began lunging at the staff member's hand, mouth open grabbing at the glass as if he was trying to bite their hand. He remained fixated on the staff member, tracking their movements while standing on his back legs and baring his teeth. Later that morning after giving Buddy some time to recover, when ACS staff attempted to leash/remove Buddy from kennel, he is offered a toy for easier leashing and he almost nipped their hand when attempting to grab the toy. But he went on the walk without further issue. 03/07/25: Buddy will immediately redirect on to handlers treat pooch as soon as he’s let out of his kennel. Handler will continue to the play yard and Buddy will keep turning his head to the side attempt to come closer to handlers legs. 03/07/25: Buddy will immediately redirect on to handlers treat pooch as soon as he’s let out of his kennel. Handler will continue to the play yard and Buddy will keep turning his head to the side attempt to come closer to handlers legs. 03/03/25: (Trainer note): Buddy was at the front of his kennel and very still with a neutral frame when the trainer approached. He was easily leashed and began to jump at the trainer with a closed mouth when he left the kennel. Buddy was easily redirected with treats but then significantly pulled the short distance to the training rom where he momentarily passed out. Buddy quickly recovered and was taken to the live room for LATTE. Buddy was kept on a slip leash for the session and took a few minutes to be able to focus on the enrichment. He eventually settled on the lick mat. Buddy made his way through the enrichment items slowly, orienting to the handler every two or three items. Buddy became more relaxed during the session and solicited some brief petting before stepping away from the trainer. He was easily and calmly returned to his kennel. 02/26/25: (Trainer note): As novel handler approaches Buddy; he had whale eyes, and his body was stiff. After being given treats and seeing the leash, he softened up and had a soft tail wag and was able to be leashed safely. When passing other dogs in crates, he will mildly pull towards them but is easily redirected away. When in the behavior office, he was kept on leash instead of letting loose on a drag leash due to his stiff nature in kennel and aloof behavior in the room. Once he started to use the puzzle toys he loosened up and he became less stiff and had a loose tail wag. When he passed by other handlers in the room, he would sniff them for a moment and wag his tail, but did not solicit attention. He was brought back to kennel with no issues.

Summary (7):: 2/23/25. Upon approach, Buddy had loose body and high energy. Handler tried to leash but took a few tries due to mouthiness and leash biting. After he was finally leashed he walked with handler to medical -all while leash biting- but then calmed down and solicited pets. Allowed full and thorough ear cleaning to both sides. Went back to kennel easily. 2/21/25- ACS reported that Buddy began to become mouthy on acs thigh pants. 02/21/25 (Trainer Note): Buddy is standing at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. Buddy is easily leashed and pulls moderately towards the canine training room. He lunges towards dogs in kennels as they walk past. However, he shakes off and softens as soon as he is brought to the canine training room. Buddy engages with mild interest in the various enrichment items, but only does so for a few moments before he becomes disinterested. Handler then works with him on conditioning the 123 game and he engages for a few minutes before ceasing to take treats. He lunges at dogs again as he is returned to kennel. 02/09/25 Buddy is standing on his kennel door with a loose frame as the handler approaches. Buddy is leashed as he drops down, proceeding outside for a walk. Buddy displays a loose frame as he trots alongside the handler. Buddy will pull towards other dogs with novel handlers during the walk. He will catch treats when tossed and take them moderately when administered. Buddy and the handler will commence their walk before returning to the facility. Buddy enters his kennel with no issue. 02/05/25: Buddy is standing at the front of his kennel and is leashed with ease before being brought to the assessment room. Once inside, Buddy is collared, and a drag leash is placed on him. He begins to freely explore the room, sniffing around and marking various areas. During the session, Buddy attempts to mount the handler but is successfully redirected by a secondary handler. He displays signs of social hyper-arousal, including heavy panting. Despite this, Buddy responds to redirection with treats, taking them willingly. Buddy is safely escorted back to his kennel without any issues.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Due to Buddy potential challenges we recommend he is placed in a home with No children (under 13). Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in the Care Center environment, the behavior department recommends Buddy be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Buddy to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Buddy to new and unfamiliar situations.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Kennel presence

Potential challenges comments:: Social hyperarousal/Basic manners/poor impulse control: During Buddy's handling assessment he began to jump and attempt to mount the handlers he was to be taken off and responded when a toy was used to distract him. Anxiety: Buddy began to display heavy panting and whining during his assessment. Managing his anxiety will require creating a calm environment, providing enrichment activities, and using stress-reducing techniques like puzzle toys and regular exercise. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration- Buddy is reported to be dog-reactive. Leash-biting: Buddy is quick to grab the leash in his mouth. We recommend walking him with a toy to dissuade him from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach him to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Kennel presence: Buddy was noted to lunge at his kennel door.
