Animal Profile

Xena

Hello, my name is Xena. My animal id is #227318. I am a female brown cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - impound on 5/17/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Xena is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Pre-Screener Form A volunteer writes: Xena's really hoping that someone will take the time to understand her. She wants to be a good friend and to understand us too, but explaining ourselves and our good intentions hasn't been going as smoothly as we'd like. We don't know much about Xena's life before coming to the shelter. She was left alone in an apartment and though she was friendly when officers introduced themselves, going into their carrier and coming to the big noisy shelter, well, those have been just several steps too far for her taste. Fair enough. When we offer treats and pets from our scratcher tool, Xena goes to good naturedly sniff before remembering that no, she really doesn't want to be here. In fact, she'll be the first one to tell you. Xena talks to us and asks for space without letting us learn very much about who she is or wants to be, but we know that there's a very special cat in there and she only needs a little chance.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 5. Red

KNOWN HISTORY:: Xena was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on her behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 5/31/25 FB47 Xena may be slightly improved and was on top of the den, looking wary. She allowed an approach with treats on the scratcher tool and sniffed the treats, but then began to raise a paw and give gentle swats to the tool. 6/4/25 FB26 Pokes out of the den stress meowing when attempting to make contact with the scratcher tool. After, she swats at it when getting near. Ended to reduce stress.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Sweet,Affectionate

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Xena was resting on top of the den and became alert upon approach, with wide eyes and ears forward. She hissed and retreated from the scratcher tool, avoiding contact. When petting was attempted, she sat up and batted at the tool. The interaction was ended to reduce stress. Xena is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
