Kane
Hello, my name is Kane. My animal id is #229394. I am a desexed male gray cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a aco - impound on 6/13/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormKane is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A volunteer writes: Kane may not know what it's like to be someone's first choice but he knows he'd like to be that someday. He also doesn't know how to articulate his hopes in a friendly way and I understand the frustration there. Determinedly hiding from our offers of friendship and grumbling away any offers of treats and toys, starting on the right paw seems to have eluded Kane but we believe in second chances and thirds and fourths. It's why we keep introducing ourselves even and trying to learn a little bit more about him. We don't know much about Kane's life before coming to the Care Center, but we can tell he likes when it's a little more quiet and that he really wants a chance to be someone's choice.

Behavior Condition: 5. Red
KNOWN HISTORY:: Kane was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 6/20/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, completely hidden from view. He remains in his den when offered treats and a catnip toy. I do not push hands-on interaction at this time, needs more time to adjust. 6/25/25 FB58 Sitting at the front of the cage with a tense face and body, hisses, and low growls. He shows no interest in the squeeze up or chicken offered and jumps up onto the shelf. I open the food slot and flick treats near him and he begins to eat them with some low growls, I click to mark each time he eats a treat. 6/26/25 FB79 On the top part of his kennel, Kane is perched with his paws tucked away with his big wide eyes and loose tail; however, when i open the kennel door he starts to wrap his tail around his body as he sniffs the tool then flinches and presses himself further to the back of the kennel as i attempt to make contact. When i am able to pet he harshly hisses and lip licks some more while starting to look around the kennel for an escape from mw with his body tense, hunched in shoulder and his ear tilted.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

CHARACTER TYPE: : Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyer for more information.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Kane was hunched in the back of his kennel as the assessor approached, body and face tense. Kane hissed with completely flattened ears when spoken to and he hissed while backing away as the kennel door opened. Kane swatted and hissed at the scratcher tool as the assessor reached towards him. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. 7/16/25 Kane displayed similar behaviors during his reassessment. Kane is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat / scratch / bite and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment. Kane does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
