Summary:: 8/9:Senorita Roja came into the care center a stray. On intake, it is noted that Senorita Rojas was very vocal, hard barking and lunging at staff members and the handler. Senorita Roja was given treats to which she was receptive to, however when getting near would continue to experiencing high FAS. She would bare teeth at handler and when handler would get close to the finder, she would jump and snap. Due to this behavior canine behavior was called to retrieve her. As canine behavior was assisting with looping their leashes around her, she become more overly stressed and redirected to the finder, biting their thumb. Bite did not break skin. During Senorita Roja medical exam she is noted to have a tense but able to be leashed and brought to intake room. Able to be coaxed onto scale using cheese. Once off scale, handler attempts to slowly pet and she snapped immediately and continued to bare teeth thereafter.Snapped once while awaiting sedative to take effect. In the care center, she is noted to bare teeth and lunge at the front of her kennel door. Due to the quick escalation in behavior, Senorita Roja is not a candidate for an assessment.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 8/13/26: Senorita Roja is introduced to a novel spayed female and approaches the fence with a tense body and mid-high level flagged tail. She sniffs nose to nose through the fence briefly before turning and walking away. She remains avoidant of the other dog, greeting handlers and doesn't reapproach.

Summary (6):: 8/12/26: Senorita Roja is at the front of her kennel when handler approaches. She is quiet and looks up from her sitting position and is handed a treat. She takes the treat and is distracted while the handler unlocks the kennel. She backs up when the leash is presented but is leashed using a treat lure. Once she is leashed she steps out of the kennel tentatively. She shakes off and walks quickly through the hallways until she is outside. Outside she immediately relieves herself and sniffs around. She takes treats when offered from handlers hand, and stays close. She is rekenneled with no issue. 8/9/26: Senorita Roja is at the front of the kennel with a whale eye and tense body. She is barking repeatedly towards the handler. There are uneaten treats at the front of the kennel. Handler tosses high value treats. She eats them. Handler crouches down and feeds her high value treats. She can be heard barking and low growling. Handler presents the leash and tries to coax her head through the leash. She retreats and refuses to take high value treats. Handler can notice her growling and lip curling as the leash remains in the kennel. When handler stands up, and closes the kennel Senorita Roja bares her teeth and snaps and muzzle punches the kennel bars. Attempts to leash her are ceased and the interaction is ended.

Summary (7):: 8/9/26: Senorita Roja is at the front of the kennel with a tense body and whale eye. She is alarm barking towards the front. Handler offers her treats and she takes them. Handler opens the kennel and Senorita retreats to the back continuing to whale eye and bark towards the handler, her tail tucked tightly against her rear. Handler offers her high value treats and she approaches the front slowly. Handler crouches down and is able to leash her with high value. The kennel is opened and Senorita exits the kennel. She walks with the handler out towards the backyard. She sniffs her surroundings and relieves herself a few times. Handler tosses treats on the ground and she sniffs them but does not take them. Senorita is then walked back to the shelter. She is returned to kennel without issue and left with treats. 8/8/26: Senorita Roja is at the front of the kennel growling and hard barking at handler. Her body is tense and she is whale eying the handler. Handler lures her to the front of kennel with treats which she takes. Handler presents leash without moving it and continues feeding treats. Eventually she walks through the loop, and quickly exits the kennel. Once out of the kennel her body is tense however the growling and vocalizing ceases. She walks quickly into the play yard and sniffs around, shaking off. Her body loosens though her tail remains tucked. After allowing her to sniff clip handler double clips her at the door. She walks quickly back through the kennels and re-enters her kennel with no issue. She is rewarded with treats and the interaction is ended. 8/6/26: Senorita Roja is noted to bare teeth at the front of kennel and lunge at the front of her kennel. 8/5/26:(late entry) K9 behavior is reported to help with Senorita Roja's intake. As the handler approaches, Senorita is sitting in front of the finder, alert barking and baring teeth; they toss treats at her, but she shows no interest, only fixating on the 1st handler. The 1st handler passes their leash to the finder to place it on Senorita; they do so, but she headwhips the leash off. They try once more, and once they got it on, Senorita snaps and bites their finger, with no blood drawn. The 2nd handler lassos their leash onto Senorita, and both handlers begin to walk her into the hallway; as they do so, Senorita looks back at the 1st handler a few times, but the 2nd handler applies leash pressure so she can continue to walk. Upon entry, both handlers muscle Senorita into kennel, and the 2nd and another handler use the hook to remove the leash

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Senorita Roja so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.

Recommendations comments:: No Children: Due to Senorita Roja's fearful disposition and escalating to defensive aggression, we recommend a home with no children and an adult-only home. Place with a New Hope Partner: We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/Touch Sensitivity/Low Threshold for Arousal: During medical intake Senorita Roja is reported to snap at staff after they attempted to pet her and bared teeth and growled thereafter. It is important to always go slow and give Senorita the option to walk away from any social interaction. Senorita should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Senorita's choice to approach a new person or thing. Senorita may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Low threshold for arousal/Fearful/Potential for Defensive Aggression: Senorita Roja is noted to bare teeth at the front of kennel and lunge at the front of her kennel, she has also been observed to snap during handling. Senorita should never be forced to interact, she should always be given the opportunity to walk away from situations or people she finds uncomfortable. We recommend a slow approach and we recommend ONLY force-free, reward-based training methods for Senorita. More aversive techniques are likely to increase fear, increase the risk of aggression, and decrease Senorita's quality of life.
