She initially began barking before escalating to lunging and biting the partner. The bites did draw blood and resulted in 2 punctures to the back of the knee. Roxy was reclaimed but was returned quickly due to concern of her behavior. In care, Roxy has shown leash biting behavior and as attempted to bite a handler hand during leashing. Besides this Roxy has show some interest in treats and toys. Medically, Roxy is apparently healthy.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 4. Orange

Date of intake:: 5/7/2025

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray; limited history

Bite history:: 5/7/25: When reclaimed by the owner Roxy bite the owner partner again, no other information was provided 4/7/25:Roxy was reported to have bitten while in the previous home. Roxy was reported to have bitten while the owner and their partner were arguing in the home. Roxy began barking and then lunged, biting the victim in multiple places - hand, back of knee/leg, and right foot. The bite to the back of the knee resulted in two puncture wounds.

Date of assessment:: 5/14/2025

Summary:: 5/14/25: Due to Roxy Bite HX, a handling assessment will not be conducted at this time. 4/27/25: Roxy was brought in by the police due to a bite in the previous home as a result of an argument. The previous owner and their partner were arguing when ROxy began barking and then lunged, escalating to biting into multiple places - hand, back of knee, and right foot, leaving two punctures on the back of the knee. Due to Roxy's concerning level of escalation and bite history, she is not a safe candidate for a handling assessment.

Summary (4):: 5/16/25: Roxy is observed to jump off her kennel door and rebound off the back of her kennel landing onto her water bowls, she does this repeatedly as the staff member is getting another dog out next to her.

Summary (5):: 05/14/25 (KSV): Roxy walks to the front of her kennel and displays a soft body as the handler kneels down to eye level, speaking to her in a gentle tone. The handler offers Roxy a Smart Stick, which she takes before retreating to the back of her kennel to eat it immediately. The handler walks away, allowing Roxy to enjoy her enrichment. Roxy remains in her kennel safely with no issues. 5/12: Roxy had to be removed from her kennel due to her transfer door being broken and her kennel was heavily soiled. When 2 handlers approach her kennel, she is barking and bouncing off the walls of her kennel. She does take dropped treats but then avoids leashing. It takes a few attempts with the repeated pattern before she is successfully elashed. She is double leashed as a precaution and taken out of the room. She pants and paces, no longer taking treats. it takes several minutes for her transfer door to be fixed. Roxy eventually lays down between the handlers but her body is still tense and she remains hypervigilant. Once her door is fixed she returns to kennel without issue. 5/6 (late entry): Canine Behavior was requested to assist with handling for Roxy's reclaim. When the 2 behavior staff approached her kennel, she bounced off the walls and door while alternating between rapid-fire barking and screeching. Handler 1 drops treats to the floor to see if she would take anything to refocus her. Roxy begins to eat the treat pile, which allows Handler 1 to leash her. As a precaution, a 2nd lead would be placed on Roxy. But when Handler 2 attempted to leash Roxy, she lunged up, attempting to bite Handler 2's hand. When she lands, she lunges again and latches onto Handler 2's lead. Hanalder 12 tosses treats again, and she lets go to sniff the treats but does not eat them this time. Handler 2 can leash her while her head is down when sniffing. Once out of the kennel, Roxy is walked to the front where she greets her owner with jumps and a wiggling body. She begins to head whip toward the owner and both handlers, mouth open as her arousal continues to increase. Her owner clips a leash to her collar, and both slip leads are removed. Roxy then leaves with her owner.

Summary (6):: 05/02/25 (KSV): Roxy is observed standing at the front of her kennel hard barking. She softens and jumps on the front of the kennel as the handler approaches. Roxy takes treats with a soft mouth. She resumes barking as the handler walks away.

Summary (7):: 4/30: As handlers attempt to remove a neighboring dog from its kennel, Roxy is panting heavily and barking rapidly. She stops for a few seconds to eat a treat, but she spins in slow circles, still panting heavily. 4/29: When a handler enters the room looking for a specific dog, they see Roxy standing on her kennel door, barking and growling at the handler. The handler checked on the specific dog they were seeking and then went to check on Roxy. She jumps down from the door, spins in a circle while still growling. She stops when the handler bends down in front of her kennel. But her body remains stiff in a crouched position with a high flagging tail. The handler offers her treats and she takes them with a soft mouth but maintains her stare on the handler. 04/28/25 (KSV): Roxy is standing up on the kennel door with a loose frame as handler approaches. She begins to jump off of the door once they are in front of her kennel. Handler speaks to her with a soft tone and offers her treats through the kennel door which she takes gently. Roxy becomes wiggly as handler presents a soft toy and immediately catches it once it is tossed into kennel. She lays at the front of kennel and chews on the toy for the remainder of the time handler is in the room. 4/9/25 (KSV): The kennel room was quiet and musical enrichment was playing as handler entered room. Roxy stood neutrally at front of kennel as handler greeted her with a soft voice. She immediately perked up when offered a rope ball. She picked it up and took it to her blanket. Roxy reapproached handler and ate pieces of beef grillers tossed into kennel with a loose tail wag. Roxy was observed swatting her ball around playfully while handler was in the room. 4/8: When a handler approaches Roxy's kennel, she tenses and slowly moves to the back of her kennel, grumbling. The handler speaks to her softly while slowly bending to one knee and offering treats. Roxy slowly comes to the front, head/neck extended out, sniffing the air. She finally comes to the front and takes deep sniffs at the treat but doesn't take it. The handler places it on the ground along with a few other piece,s and she extends the front of herself while her back legs remain in place towards the back of the kennel, quickly grabbing a piece before scurrying to the back of her kennel. The handler ends the interaction and walks away after seeing her eat.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Roxy's defensive behaviors and escalation to biting in the previous home, we recommend that she be placed in an aduly only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the noted concerns displayed in the previous home environment, the behavior department recommends Roxy be placed with a New Hope placement partner who can provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Roxy to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing her to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Roxy presents with outside of the care centers.
