Date of assessment:: 8/11/2025

Summary:: Brownie has been observed to be highly fearful during his stay in the care center. Noted to be tense at the back of the kennel with wide eyes. When handlers are able to coax Brownie out of kennel he begins to hide under the kennels. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety Brownie is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary (7):: 8/17/25: Brownie is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He retreats to the back as the handler removes his towel cover and unlocks the door. He was comfortable taking treats when the handler tossed them inside his kennel. He has a tense body and allows the handler to leash him. Once leashed, he slowly comes forward to the front, and slowly comes out of kennel. He then baulks to the ground and tries to pull back to his kennel. When the handler tries to towel him to see of he can be picked up and hides under the kennels and lays down on the ground with a tense body. He was no longer interested in treats and the handler is able to apply leash pressure and slide him forward. He is then placed back into his kennel and ends the interaction. 8/16/25: (KSV) Brownie's kennel is covered with a blanket, handler gently moves the blanket aside and Brownie startles and retreats to the back of the kennel with a tense body and wide eyes. Handler tosses a few treats to him and he stays in the back refusing to come forward remaining tense. Interaction is ended. 8/11/25: PM: Vet staff had difficulty removing Brownie from kennel. He was leashed and as soon as the kennel opened, Brownie began to thrash. He was taken out of kennel and continues thrashing but when trying to return him due to the intensity of his behavior, Brownie ducks under the kennels. He has to be muscled out from under the kennels in order to be returned. 8/11/25: It is reported that Brownie is very fearful. When the they were able to coax him out of kennel he quickly darted under the kennel and began to hide. He was then returned to kennel. 8/10/25: Brownie is at the back of his kennel with a tense body and widened eyes as handler approaches. He refuses to move and turns is head away as the handler unlocks the door and tries to leash him. Once leashed, he continues to have a tense body with widened eyes and he did not want to come forward. Due to fearfulness, the handler retrieves their leash with a hook and then ends the interaction after locking the door and walking away. 8/10/25: It was reported on the whiteboard that Brownie is "very scared" and when attempting to walk him he only walks out to the hallway and refuses to move further.

Summary:: Fearful, whale eye, allowed pick up with towel

Date of initial:: 8/9/2025

Summary:: Whale eyed, tense and trembling. Remains frozen for exam and tasks

ENERGY LEVEL:: Brownie is described as medium energy. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for them.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to high level of fear we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful,Anxiety

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Brownie's previous owner states that he will urinate/defecate when unfamiliar people are in the home. Brownie has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to be tense, trembling and showing whale eye. When removed kennel Brownie attempts to hide under the kennel. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Brownie would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Anxiety: Brownie's previous owner states that he has general anxiety. If Brownie displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Brownie's previous owner states that he will bark when approached. Brownie will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
