Date of assessment:: 6/6/2026
Summary:: Milo was brought to the care centers as an owner surrender and is noted to have several bite incidents. The owner stated that over the past five years, Milo has been involved in five bite incidents. The owner reported that Milo appears to bite while "protecting the 6-year-old child in the home". During these incidents, Milo has bitten an adult household member on the leg, leaving one puncture wound, then release and run away. The most recent incident occurred in 2025. The owner also stated that when Milo was approximately 7 months old, he would grab the child in the home and drag him around the house but never bit the child. On intake, Milo was thrashing on the leash and snarling and showing teeth while trying to be handled for vaccines. Due to Milo's extensive bite history, and concerning quick escalations to biting, he is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (1):: Milo is reported to love cheese for sit, down, paw, and say cheese for photos.
Summary (7):: 6/13/26 (KSV): Milo is at the front of his kennel jumping and barking when handler approaches. When handler talks to him, Milo starts panting and pacing back and forward in his double kennel. Handler offers a treat and he gently takes it and sits at the front. Milo follows command "sit" and "down" and gets treat as a reward. He continues barking but stops after handler asks him to sit again. After some time of engaging with him, handler ends interaction.
Date of intake:: 6/5/2026
Summary:: Thrashing, snarling, and showing teeth
Date of initial:: 6/6/2026
Summary:: Reported baring teeth and snapping. Opted to sedate
ENERGY LEVEL:: Milo is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Milo.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the multiple bite history we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Milo's previous owner states that he has daily accidents and will pee on the furniture. Milo will likely need guidance with house training. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. Please see handout on House Soiling. Destructive Behavior: Milo's previous owner states that he is destructive in the home. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Milo will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so they can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Basic Manners: Milo's previous owner states that he will jump up often or non stop. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Handling Sensitivity: Milo's previous owner states that he will snap when held. restrained. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Milo to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive/Multiple Bite History/ Bite History (Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Escalating to biting is a behavior that Milo has rehearsed repeatedly over their life. This behavior is likely to continue as it has become part of Milo's repertoire, and will need careful management to work toward reducing triggers for Milo and reducing the resulting bites. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression.
