Nabi
Hello, my name is Nabi. My animal id is #233249. I am a female brown tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 7/30/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- owner elderly.
Reservation in progress
Someone is in the process of reserving me, check back in case the reservation is not finalized.
Nabi is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. A volunteer writes: Snuggled up under her blanket, it looks like Nabi's trying to wish the day away. Each day brings visitors who want nothing more than to reach a helping hand out to someone who could very much use it, but Nabi doesn't always see it that way. She was brought to us when her guardian went into care and though we don't know much about her life before coming to the shelter, we'd lovingly leap at the chance to learn about Nabi now. Except, she hasn't really wanted to tell us very much. She'll allow some pets, but mostly hopes you'll see past the blanket she uses to comfort herself and into her heart where she's really only asking for a chance.

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
KNOWN HISTORY:: Nabi was brought in with limited information on her behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 8/1/25 PRIOR ASSESSMENT Nabi was resting in the den upon approach. When the cover was lifted, she slowly turned away with her ears angled to the side. She allowed gentle petting with the scratcher tool through the side portal but began to low growl during the assessment. The session was ended early to reduce her stress. 8/3/25 Vol. Nabi was fearful. She was sitting in loaf in the back of the top cubby. When I opened the cubby door, she scrunched backwards and had airplane ears. I shut the cubby door and opened the kennel door. I talked to her through the kennel open kennel door, but she remained tense; so, I ended the interaction. 8/6/25 Vol. Sitting behind her litter box with wide eyes and flat ears. Recoiled from clicker tool with Squeeze-ups. Hissed at the cat dancer. Fearful kitty 8/8/25 Vol. Hiding under towel in main cage. Put in treat bowl. No movement or reaction. Tried to gently find Nabi and remove towel but she was deep under layers. No movement or reaction. Did not want to push. Ended interaction 8/10/25 Vol. Hiding under a towel in the main kennel area. Gave her a cubby privacy cover and otherwise left her alone. 8/17/25 Vol. Nabi was frozen in fear in the back of the top cubby with pupils fully dilated and airplane ears. I put a treat on the ledge in front of the portal and heard her hiss. 8/19/25 Vol. Sitting in her cubby behind privacy sheet with flat ears and wide eyes. She hissed when cubby door was opened. She was hesitant at first, but eventually ate Squeeze-ups from a spoon. Had no interest in playing with toys. She did eat up tuna but only after I had ended the interaction. 8/24/25 Vol. Nabi was a tiny bit better this week. She hissed with I opened the cubby door. But I she did poke her head out of the cubby to eat treats. She didn’t immediately retreat back into the cubby, but she was doing a little lip licking while I talked to her. 8/25/25 ACFR Upon approach Nabi is in her hiding spot, ears back, with pupils dilated. Treats are offered which she does sniff but does not take. She is able to be pet on the head with the scratcher tool briefly but flees to the main cubby area to avoid further contact. 8/31/25 FB32 Nabi has been showing consistent behaviors in our care center and has not shown improvement with daily interactions or enrichment offered. For this reason, the feline behavior team is going to discontinue recording daily behavior notes in Shelter Buddy. She is still going to receive daily enrichment and we will continue to monitor their behavior. Notes will resume if we notice any changes in behavior. 9/3/25 Resting inside the cubby. Alert with eyes wide. She slowly retreats with ears turned to the side. Hesitant throughout the interaction but engages for offered treats allowing pets along the head with the scratcher tool. Wary with her surroundings scanning the room. Ended to help reduce stress.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Curious,Timid,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to consistent fearfulness. Counselor discretion is advised.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Nabi's behavior has been consistently fearful over the past month from her initial behavior assessment (see Enrichment Note from 8/1/25 for more details). During the re-evaluation, Nabi was crouched down in the middle of the top cubby, hisses when spoken to and opening the door, and steps back with a tenses body and wide, dilated eyes. She sniffs treats offered on the scratcher tool, then sits up at the back corner of the cubby when reaching close. When pet on the head and body, she hisses and retreats to the shelf. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress. When tidying up her linens in to top cubby and pushing them closer to the back, Nabi steps closer to the portal door and spits at the assessor. After the assessor finishes tidying up and pulling their hand away, Nabi sits up at the back with her tail wrapped around her body. Nabi tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
