Zeke
Hello, my name is Zeke. My animal id is #241260. I am a male tan dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 11/9/2025.
Zeke is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Zeke has not been acclimating well in the care center despite best efforts to keep him comfortable, including repeatedly jumping and spinning off his kennel walls and pulling hard toward neighboring kennels. During interactions he paces, pants, and has difficulty settling, though he can briefly engage with enrichment and handlers for treats. Medically, Zeke is apparently healthy.

A volunteer writes: Zeke is just a big old teddy bear. He is in good shape, cuddly and so so handsome. Zeke was found tied up at the 11th street A train station. Zeke is 2 years old. When we first meet him, he is clearly stressed by his new surroundings. He warms up slowly and is happy to get pets and love, but isn't really forthcoming with his personality. But the next week when we meet him he is much more open to sharing more about himself. He wiggles up to us, rubbing against us and even showing us his excellent playing! After he gets a few rounds of fetch in, he is happy to show us all his tricks too. His shyer personality is well worth the wait. Zeke has had mixed reactions to dogs at the shelter. At first he was avoidant. Later, Zeke is introduced to a female dog and he is soft and wiggly, displaying bounces and play bows, but he became frustrated when the other dog was avoiding him.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 11/30/25 Zeke is introduced to a novel female dog. Zeke is soft and wiggly as he approaches the gate, displaying bounces and play bows. As the female dog is guided into the male dog's pen, Zeke approaches her remaining soft, bouncing in her direction. The female dog is avoidant, running away from Zeke, frustrating him and he begins to snarl with a tense frame. As his face becomes harder and his frame grows tense, Zeke is moved away by the handlers, separating him from the female dog. 11/12/25 Zeke is introduced to a female helper dog while off leash at the care center. Zeke is reluctant to approach the gate, maintaining his distance from the gate, displacing as he sniff from a far. Zeke ignores the female dog, still displacing, sniffing and chattering to himself. Zeke is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.
Summary (6):: 12/21/25: Zeke is standing at the front of his kennel, spinning off the wall and jumping on his hind legs, displaying high arousal. To facilitate safe leashing, the handler passes him a toy to hold, which he grabs while the leash is placed. Once leashed, Zeke immediately bolts out of his kennel, attempting to engage in a kennel fight with a neighboring dog. He is redirected and escorted to the live room for enrichment. Inside the room, a drag leash is placed on him. Zeke continues to grip and chew the squeaky toy. Additional toys, including tennis balls are offered; he will retrieve them but does not disengage from the original toy initially. Eventually, he places the toy down and begins walking around the room, exploring and sniffing. When the session is complete, Zeke is returned to his kennel safely without any issues.
Summary (7):: 12/14/25: Zeke is at the front of his kennel with his paws on the kennel door as the handler approaches. He will push off and spin towards the back a few times before the handler opens the door to leash him. He is leashed with ease and then will come out of the kennel pulling hard towards the bottom of the neighboring kennel as if to kennel fight but the handler guides him to exit the room. Once in the live room, Zeke is switched from the slip leash to the drag leash. He is free to roam around and will briefly engage with the snuffle stations before engaging with the handler and soliciting treats. Zeke is panting and pacing intermittently throughout the session. He is lured through the leash with treats and is then unclipped from his drag leash. Upon entering the kennel room, Zeke will start to pull towards other kennels hard but is guided to his kennel and secured safely. He will immediately begin to spin off the wall. 12/14/25: Zeke was observed to jump on his kennel then spin off it multiple times on different times of the day. 11/30/25 (PG Note): Zeke is standing at the front of his kennel and allows the handler to leash him with ease. He is escorted to playgroup to meet a female playmate. Once inside the yard, a drag leash is placed on him. As his playmate enters, Zeke displays a soft frame, tail wagging, and is brought to the greeting gate where he participates in a nose-to-nose greeting with a loose and wiggly body. When the gate is opened, Zeke’s playmate approaches and sniffs him. The two dogs move in a circular motion around each other before the female begins to disengage. Zeke continues to follow her, appearing frustrated as she attempts to move away. He repeatedly tries to sniff her and eventually begins low growling as she disengages further. Zeke is removed from the interaction and returned to his kennel safely. See dog to dog notes for more information. 11/12/25: Zeke is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body, and when leashed is a bit reluctant to come forward, but is coaxed with a treat which he sniffs and is leashed that way. Zeke pulls hard outside, reliving himself and is brought to the yard for a dog-dog greet. Zeke is aloof for most of the interaction, and will become loose/wiggly when coaxed but is distracted. Zeke is easily brought back to kennel with no issue. 11/11/25 (BA) Zeke is at the front of his kennel very loose and wiggly with a wagging tail. He is easily leashed, forcing his way out of kennel, pulling his way down the hall way. Zeke is brought to the behavior office where he remains loose and wiggly. Zeke will allow collaring, remaining loose and wiggly, allowing handling. Zeke will lean in for pets. (Please refer to BA in behavior section for further details). Zeke will slowly become aroused and will bite his drag leash a bit but is easily redirected with treats. Zeke is leashed and returned to kennel.

Summary:: nervous, took treats hesitantly, body tense, needed to move very slow
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to how quickly Zeke became aroused and his leash biting, and initial fearfulness, we recommend an adult-only home at this time.
Potential challenges: : Fearful,Anxiety,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Zeke was reported to be tense and needed a slow approach during his medical exam. Zeke has also been reported to be reluctant to be leashed in his kennel. But he does warm up with treats and a slow approach. Please see the handout on the Decompression Period. Anxiety: Zeke began panting, pacing, and had difficulty focusing during his handling assessment. We have no history on his behavior in a home environment, so we do not know if this will occur outside of the care center. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving Zeke other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. Leash Biting/Low threshold for arousal: Zeke became quickly aroused and started leash biting during the jog portion of his assessment. He did not readily recover, but upon noticing a trea,t he stopped to eat. Please see the handout on arousal.
