Animal Profile

Donnie

Hello, my name is Donnie. My animal id is #235576. I am a desexed female brown tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 months old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 8/30/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- death of owner.

Donnie is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats in my previous home. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. A volunteer writes: Whenever someone takes the time to meet her halfway, Donnie shines. She sweetly chirps and accepts our pets, even sometimes leaning into them, but when you come to visit the Care Center, it's entirely possible that you'll walk right by Donnie's condo. In her efforts to make herself as small as she possibly can, Donnie has been hiding in her cubby or behind a blanket since August. Donnie was brought to us with other cats when their guardian was hospitalized and settling into shelter life has left her scratching her head but wanting so much to try. So please when you come to the Care Center, don't walk by, but rather offer a helping hand.

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

KNOWN HISTORY:: Donnie was brought in with limited information on their behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/09/25 Donnie was hunched in the back of her cat den as I approached, body tense and eyes wide. Donnie remained frozen and focused on me when offered treats and a catnip toy. Donnie is tolerant of petting, however she remains completely still with a tense body and face. Nervous girl - needs more time to adjust. 9/14/25 Vol. Donnie was in her den. When I lifted the cover, she moved all the way to the back of the den, staring at me. I put Temptations in the den but she did not want them. She allowed all petting with the scratcher tool. She did not try to move away or respond in any way. I gave her a toy and some more treats. She still needs time to warm up. 9/19/25 FB79 Inside of the den, Doonie sits with his tail tightly wrapped wide eyes and his ears forward when i lift the den cover. He has no reaction when spoken to or when treats were offered. He leans in very slightly to sniff the tool and tolerates all pets with no reaction. However, he flinches when i slowly bring my hand close for him to sniff. He backs away slightly but remains still and tolerant of pets on his head and cheeks until his ears tilt slightly a few moments later. 9/21/25 FB79 Inside of the den, Donnie has wide eyes when i lift the den cover and slow blinks when i speak. She has a tight tail and forward ears as she turns towards the back corner but looks back at me. She leans in to sniff the tool and allows all pets!! I was able to get my hand in and pet her some more as she slightly leaned in for more <3 9/26/25 FB79 Such a sweet shy girl; Donnie is still in the den but chirps when i lift the cover and speak to her. She starts to slow blink and leans into head bunt the tool when bring it into the den. She allows all pets on her head and around her body as she slow blinks but when i bring my hand into the den she flinches and has no interest in sniffing as she moves away from it. 9/27/25 FB79 Today, Donnie was peaking out of her den watching me with wide eyes as i spoke to a staff member. She slow blinked when i slow blinked from far but ducked her head back in when i stepped closer. When i lifted the den cover she was slightly tense with her ears forward and her shoulders hunched in while she hissed when i brought my hand in. However, she remained still and slow blinked as i spoke to her and her eyes became less dilated. After a few moments, she sniffed my hand when i brought it in again and tolerated pets on her head and her cheeks ! 9/29/25 FB61 Donnie was in his den as I approached, body and face completely hidden from View. When I lift his den cover, I see that he is hunched with a tense body and face and his pupils are dilated. He avoids all eye contact as I give him some treats and a catnip toy and he tolerates petting with the scratcher tool while remaining completely frozen in place. I speak to him softly before ending the session. -GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyer for more information.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Donnie was in his/her cat den as the assessor approached, body and face neutral with his/her pupils dilated and his/her ears forward. Donnie remained hidden when spoken to as well as when the kennel door was opened. Donnie tolerated petting along his/her head and body while tilting his/her ears, leaning away and remaining otherwise frozen in place. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. Donnie tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He/she may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his/her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
