Animal Profile

Thor

Hello, my name is Thor. My animal id is #253690. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 12 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 5/4/2026.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Thor is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Thor arrived at the Care Center with a limited history. His finder states that he is highly dog reactive and resource guards intensely. Additionally, his finder reported that when he was attempting to place Thor in the car, he bit them, no broken skin. Unfortunately, Thor has not acclimated well to the shelter environment. Thor has been observed to be startled when leashing and drop his body when handlers clips their leash. Thor has shown some improvements with handling. He has allowed easier leashing and has become aloof with staff during walks. Thor was noted to slowly warm up to medical staff with a slow approach to allow handling. Medically, Thor is noted to have alopecia, a hernia (umbilical), and pyoderma

Summary:: Thor FKA Teddy Graham has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to be tense and have a tucked tail during intake. While in care, Graham has been observed to have a neutral body, low tail, and wide eyes. When the handler goes to clip their leash, Thor head whips and drops his body to the ground and stays in that position for a moment. Due to the high level of fear, stress, and anxiety. Thor is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary (5):: 5/24/26: It is reported on the behavior board that Thor was bathed (body handling) without issue and was "very friendly". 5/23/26: It is noted on the behavior board that Thor is "a slow walker but sweet".

Summary (6):: 5/23/26: Thor is at the front of his kennel with a soft body. He spins around a few times as the kennel is unlocked. Thor is then easily leashed and taken out of the kennel. He is taken out to the street where he walks with a loose leash besides the handler. He relieves himself a few times. As people pass by, Thor looks to them with a slightly tense body. He is easily called away and redirected with treats. Thor is walked back to the shelter. He checks in with the handler a few times for treats but remains aloof throughout the rest of the walk. Thor is then walked back inside and is returned to kennel with treats and some gentle leash pressure. 5/13/26: Thor is at the front of his kennel with a loose body; he is easily leashed on a pre-clipped leash and brought out the room. On the street, Thor walks ahead and next to the handler with mild leash tension; he doesn't react to people. Thor is mainly aloof; he doesn't engage with the handler when they call for his attention, even when a treat is presented. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Thor to his kennel. 5/11/26: Thor is at the front of the kennel with a tense body and wide eyes when the handler approaches. He is easily leashed with a pre-clipped leash; however, when the leash touches his neck, he flinches hard and retreats slightly from the handler. The handler is able to coax him out of kennel, and he is taken to the yard. While in the yard he reamins tense with a tucked tail and pinned back ears. He is easily returned to kennel.

Summary (7):: 5/10/26: Thor was lying down at front of kennel when handler approached. As handler opened kennel door Thor stood up. He was easily leashed and pulled from kennel. While walking Thor was at times lethargic and would stop for a couple seconds before continuing. He was uninterested in treats. Thor was returned to kennel with no issue. 5/7/36: Thor is lying down at back of kennel as handler approached. When handler opened kennel door Thor came forward with a tucked tail, ears back and tense body. Thor dodged the leash on the first attempt but the second attempt was successful and he was pulled from kennel. Thor was taken to the backyard where he walked next to handler with slack in the leash. While in the backyard he turned down an treat offered. When there were sudden unexpected noises Thor would flinch and drop to the ground. Thor's tail stayed tucked between his legs during his time outside. He was returned to kennel with no issue. 5/5/26: Thor is wide eyed, standing with neutral body in kennel. As handler begins to unlock door, he steps back, maintains wide eyes. Teddy Graham does not approach, but allows 'drop-lasso' to be leashed as handler reaches into kennel. Handler steps back, opens kennel door wide open and he steps out slowly but steadily. Teddy is walked on sidewalk, he walks beside handler, loose leash. He is neutral in body, low tail, wide eyed, ears pinned back. Teddy does not approach handler for treats or contact. When re-entering MACC, when handler clips leash, teddy startles, head-whips and quickly drops his body away from the handler's hand, whale-eyed. He stays in the low position for a moment, tense bodied, but recovers to walk through hallway and re-enters kennel without issue

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have a limited history on Thor so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to resource guarding and the bite history, we recommend an adult only home. No Dog Parks: Due to his on leash reactivity, we recommend no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Thor's finder states that he will growl and snarl when anyone approaches him while he has a toy or food. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Thor's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful: Thor has been observed to be highly fearful while in care. Noted to have a tense body and tucked tail during intake. When handlers clip their leash. Thor will head whip and drop his body to the ground. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Thor would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Bite History (Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Thor's finder states that he will growl, hard bark, and pull towards dogs and other animals while on leash. Thor will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
