Animal Profile

Basil

Hello, my name is Basil. My animal id is #36310. I am a desexed female brown dog at the . The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a returns on 9/7/2018.

Reserved

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Basil is at risk for behavior concerns. Basil has a multiple-bite history and seems to escalate quickly to snapping and biting, so this is an established behavior that she may offer when threatened or overstimulated. She has previous bitten children, therefore we feel she would be best in an adult only home. She is only available to our New Hope partners. There are no medical concerns at this time.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Basil's previous owner reports that Basil will snap at children. Basil has also bitten two children on two separate occasions, for these reasons we believe she would be best set up to succeed in an adult only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Basil's multiple bite history to children reported in her previous home environment, we believe she would be best set up to succeed through placement with an experienced rescue partner. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Basil to new and unfamiliar situations.

Potential challenges: : Social hyperarousal,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Social hyper-arousal: Basil may have a low threshold for arousal. In her previous home environment she has been observed to rapidly escalate and quickly tipping over to aggression (See bite history). Immediate intervention and consultation with a qualified veterinary behaviorist/professional trainer is strongly recommended to aid in addressing this issue to prevent further behavioral concerns that may appear in the future if not treated right away. We recommend only force-free, reward based training when introducing or exposing Basil to new and unfamiliar situations. Multiple bite history/risk of future aggression: Basil has a multiple-bite history and seems to escalate quickly to snapping and biting, so this is an established behavior that she may offer when threatened or overstimulated. Basil needs careful behavior modification and management to prevent future bites. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for Basil as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression.
