Animal Profile

Missy

Hello, my name is Missy. My animal id is #230636. I am a female black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 3 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 6/28/2025.

Missy is at risk due to behavior concerns. She arrived at the care centers as a stray with little known history. During intake she allowed all handling but had a tense body, was trembling, and remained frozen for her exam. Throughout her stay she warmed up to some staff, but has been observed to become tense when pet, will growl at handlers, and is rope reactive. Missy has been displaying signs of deterioration both in and out of kennel. On her walks she is often reported to be scrambling and pulling very hard back to care centers, sometimes even sprinting into kennel. She has a hard time settling and will usually remain hypervigilant on her walks. On one occasion, even escalated to mounting the handler. In kennel she has been reported to be difficult to leash, snapping or dodging the leash, and most recently, she was reported to lunge, while lip curling, at a familiar staff member walking past her kennel. Medically, she apparently has dermatitis.

This 5-year-old shy girl is looking for a calm, adult-only home with patient, experienced humans. Missy came to MACC as a stray and is still learning to trust - but with gentle voices and tasty treats, she's starting to come out of her shell. She's quiet, sensitive, and needs time to feel safe. If you believe in second chances and the magic of a slow bloom, Missy might just be your perfect match.

Summary:: 7/5/25: Missy does not approach the gate to greet. She extends her head to sniff from afar with a tense body.

Summary (2):: 10/14/25: Missy has been observed to low growl when enrichment is being placed in her kennel 10/12/25: Missy is towards the front of her kennel as the handler approaches with a neutral body. She is easily leashed and removed from kennel for a street walk. Missy would pull very hard out of the room and down the hall. This would continue all the way towards the street. Missy would then spot a child passing by and she would become tense-bodied and has to be muscled away, due to treats and squeaker sounds not working. Shortly after, she would begin to pull towards spots to sniff and want to relieve herself. As handlers continue to walk further away from the shelter, Missy would then turn around completely and pull much harder towards the shelter. A treat is tossed the opposite way, which she would ignore and continue to pull towards the direction of the shelter. On the way back, she would continue the same behaviors and is returned back to her kennel with no issue.

Summary (3):: 10/8/2025 (LATE ENTRY/ Trainer Note): As handler walks swiftly past Missy's kennel, she is observed to lunge towards the front of the kennel, banging her front paws on the kennel bars. She has a tense body, is low growling, and nose wrinkling. 10/5/25: Missy is laying down on her kuranda bed with a soft body as handler approaches. She quickly comes to the front with a loose body. She is easily leashed and removed from kennel as she pulls out of the room. As she is walked to the street she continuously turns around to pull back to shelter. Handler would bend and coax her using baby voice and treats but she was not very receptive, occasionally approaching and continuing to walk forward. She did not accept treats until she was returned to the care centers. After the street, handler takes her to the yard. Similar behavior is displayed, continuously going back to the gate and standing in front of it. Handler attempted to do a pattern game but Missy would continuously returns back to the gate. She is leashed and returned to her kennel. As she is walked back, she pulls increasingly harder as she approaches her kennel. 10/3/25: Missy is initially quiet and neutral bodied as handler approaches, when kennel door is unlocked Missy becomes more exuberant, jumping on kennel door with front paws, when handler attempts to leash Missy pounces into play-bow position briefly, using a treat lure Missy is leashed and exits kennel with hard pulling. Missy pulls straight out of kennel room and ignores occupied crates in hallway. In elevator Missy drops into a sit position for treats, stays seated and allows petting with soft body. Exiting MACC Missy is forward, neutral bodied but pulls significantly less on side-walk, is now walking with a mostly loose leash. Missy stops intermittently to sniff, look at occupied cars for brief moments. On side walk Missy more aloof with handler compared to when on elevator, however does take treats dropped on ground and accepts gentle petting of her back/torso area with neutral body. When approaching 1st avenue, Missy attempt to turn 180 back toward MACC, she does this twice, but with moderate leash pressure she walks around the block in full, maintains neutral body, and mostly loose leash unless stopping to sniff or look at something (usually occupied cars). When turning back on 110th st. from 2nd avenue Missy does pull notably harder, and maintains moderate to hard pulling back into MACC and her kennel which she enters without issue.

Summary (4):: 9/30/25: It is reported by ACS that for second walks Missy would cross the street and shortly after would begin to pull hard back towards the shelter. Handler then mentioned as they tried to take her to the yard to continue the walk, she wouldn't move past the elevator and then proceeded to pull hard back to her kennel. 9/28/25- Missy is laying down at the front of her kennel with a soft body, she gets up and she is easily leashed. When walking pass the pop up crates Missy's hackles are fully up down her back with a slight tense body, handler tosses treats ahead and she follows them. While in the elevator handler scratches her shoulders when they stop Missy quickly jumps towards them but then stops. She is taken for a street walk and she has a moderate pull. When she sees a dog walking behind her she turns and watches them with a stiff body and a high tail. Handler calls to her but stays looking at the other dog, they keep walking forward and Missy eventually starts to walk forward. She again looks at the other dog and handler again keeps walking, she follows. She is aloof with handler. She is easily clipped and returned to kennel without issue. 9/24/25(Trainer):Missy is laying down in her kuranda bed as handler approaches. She comes to the front and is easily leashed. She is removed from the room and taken to the street for a walk. She pulls hard on leash. She does not react to people passing by and no dogs are spotted. When interacting with handlers she approaches with a somewhat soft body and relaxed tail wag but becomes stiff and lip licks when she's pet. Upon returning she pulls very hard into the care centers all the way to her kennel, almost leaping to her kennel. 9/14/25(Trainer): Missy is laying down in her kuranda bed as handler approaches. She comes to the front and is easily leashed. She is taken to the yard for a brief walk / training session. In the pen she remains uninterested in any treats offered. Handler attempts to play the "1,2,3" pattern game but Missy is unmotivated and uninterested by food rewards. She will approach handler on occasion, when baby voice is used she will approach with a softer body, but when pet will become slightly stiff. Handler ceases but Missy continues soliciting pets by pushing handlers hand with their head and pawing at them. Anytime handler pets her, her body becomes tense. She walks around the pen slowly, sniffing around. Missy is taken back to her kennel, as she enters the room she begins to spring back to her kennel, pulling very hard and leaping in it.

Summary (5):: 9/7/25: Missy is at the back of her kennel sleeping on her kuranda bed. Handler approaches and she stands up and comes forward with a neutral body. She is easily leashed and walks to the backyard. She is placed on a drag leash and wanders around the pen sniffing her surroundings an aloof. Handler calls her over and she approaches slowly. Handler brushes her side gently and Missy becomes tense. She then approaches the handler again appearing to lean her head into the handler's legs. Handler pets her again for a bit and she jumps up onto the handler standing on her hind legs. She is tolerates brief petting on her chest and head. Missy is tense bodied the entire interaction. After, Missy is walked back into the shelter and she is returned to kennel without issue. 9/5/25: Staff report that Missy mounted them while on a walk. They also report that she does not seem to be able to settle, hypervigilant on walks, turning around if a MOP is walking behind her. She is not pottying outside and her kennel is often dirty. 8/24/25: Missy is lying down sleeping in kennel. Handler approaches the front and Missy lifts her head and comes forward with a neutral body. She is offered a treat and does not take it. Missy is easily leashed and taken out of the room. She is brought to the street where she spots a dog outside the gate. Missy stares at the dog with a tense body and a forward posture. She sniffs her surroundings and walks slowly alongside the handler. A car parks nearby and she stares towards car slightly tense as a person gets out and crosses the street. Missy is called away and she follows the handler for a short moment but will regularly stop and look towards the person from across the street. Missy pulls hard back into the building and is brought to the backyard. She is placed on a drag leash with a slow approach and walks around the pen with a neutral body. She sniffs around the pen and relieves herself a few times. Missy is aloof with the handler, sniffing them then walking away. Handler tries to engage with her with toys, tossing a few tennis balls across the pen. She follows them but does not show further interest. A pigeon lands nearby and she approaches it slowly with a lowered body. The pigeon flies away. Missy is re-leashed and she flinches slightly but is able to be leashed successfully. She is then brought back upstairs and returned to kennel without issue.

Summary (6):: 8/21/25: Missy is reported to try to bite at handler's hands and at the leash when the leash is is being removed when she has returned back in kennel. 8/17/2025 (Trainer): Missy is laying down in her kuranda bed with a neutral body as handler approaches. She stands and comes to the front. She is easily leashed and removed from the room. Missy is taken to the street for a brief relief walk. It's important to note that at the time of the walk, dinner was being given out. Missy was very adamant about returning back to the care centers. Handler had to continuously use baby voice and coaxing to continue walk, as she would quicky turn towards MAAC and begin pulling very hard back. She relieves herself and once handler turns back around, she begins to pull even harder. She does not react to people passing by and no dogs areas spotted. Throughout walk she maintains a neutral body, occasionally perking her ears up. When using baby voice, she becomes a bit softer and gives a relaxed tail wag, however, when pet, she begins to lip lick immediately and handler ceases. Handler returns her to kennel without issue; she rapidly consumes her dinner waiting for her. 8/9/25: Missy is at the front of the kennel with a neutral body and a soft wagging tail. She flinches as the leash is presented and placed near her, but is able to be easily leashed without the help of spray cheese. She pulls moderately out of the room and taken to the elevator. She walks around the elevator, aloof and does not take treats tossed on the ground. On the street she spots a small child several feet away. She stares at the child with a tense body. Handler calls to her and uses squeakers but Missy does not respond. Mild leash pressure is used to get her to walk across the street and she continues forward. Missy stops and sniffs her surroundings and relieves herself. She regularly turns back and watches the child across the street with a tense body and tail. Missy is walked back to the shelter. Missy is pulling very hard back to the shelter with a forward tense body. She pulls to where she begins coughing and hacking. Missy pulls very hard all the way back to the building. She is pre-clipped without issue and is returned to kennel without issue.

Summary:: Allowed all handling

Date of initial:: 6/28/2025

Summary:: Tense and trembling, but remains frozen for exam and tasks

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Missy so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 9/5/25: Staff report that Missy mounted them while on a walk. They also report that she does not seem to be able to settle, hypervigilant on walks, turning around if a MOP is walking behind her. She is not pottying outside and her kennel is often dirty.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Missy has been observed to become tense and hover over toys in her possession. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Missy mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful Defensive: Missy has been observed to be tense and fearful during her stay in the care center. Noted to growl towards handlers and dodge the leash in kennel. It is important to move slowly with Missy, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Anxiety: Missy was observed to have anxiety at the Care Centers. She mounts staff, is hypervigilant and has a hard time settling. She will need daily enrichment and training to help manage her behavior. Please see the handout on General Anxiety.
