Sailor
Hello, my name is Sailor . My animal id is #221734. I am a female brown brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 1 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 3/4/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormSailor is at risk for behavioral reasons. Sailor was returned from foster due to multiple bite incidents. When the foster parents child went to pet Sailor on the head she bit them on the hand resulting in two puncture wounds. The foster parents partner then attempted to pet Sailor on the head. Sailor attempted to bite them, due to them moving their hand quickly only an abrasion was caused. During her stay in the care center Sailor has been observed to be receptive to treats and allow handlers to pet her. Medically Sailor has a mass, is overweight, and has periodontal disease.

My #BoroughBreak Buddy Writes: Sailor is an absolute ANGEL! She has no behavioral issues whatsoever. All she wants to do is to be as close to you as possible. She is gentle, sweet, and loves to cuddle. Sometimes she will just stop and want to cuddle. Her favorite thing to do is to give kisses. She would look for leaves to nibble at, but she was able to be redirected. Her ideal walk is a short jog and then going to somewhere that has mulch. She is clearly potty trained and communicative. Although older pups don't get the most traction she is as home ready as it gets. We walked for a long time. We stopped to play in the grass. Then we went to a bench where she insisted on laying on top of me for as long as I would let her. We then went to Central Park where we took a rest in the grass (she fell asleep in/on my arm). We explored more in the park, worked on some training, and closed out the afternoon with a stop at the coffee shop. She was not reactive with other dogs. She would sniff them if she could, but otherwise doesn't care too much. She did not react when dogs were reactive towards her. I cannot emphasize enough how lovely she is and I hope her forever parents see what I see in her.

[Spay/Neuter Waiver - Age] It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

Upon intake, Sailor was fearful in her crate. She was hesitant to come out of her crate so she had to be coaxed with treats and praises. Once she was out, she was a happy girl who wanted to pounce on staff and get pets. She was not collared or scanned for MC due to her fearful state. She allowed being transported to kennel.

Due to the bite incident, Sailor is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary:: 3/18/25: Sailor greets another dog with a neutral body at the gate. She approaches briefly and disengages. She does not reapproach.
Summary (7):: 4/22/25- Sailor is at the front of the kennel with a soft body, she is easily leashed. She is taken to the play yard and placed on a drag leash. She jumps on handler seeking attention. She allows handler to pet her head, neck, chest and back. When her back is scratched she leans her head back and licks at the air. She follows the command to sit and gently takes treats. She looks at a dog passing with a soft body, handler calls to her and presents a treat. She stays focused on handler as they continuously feed treats. Handler sits on the bench and Sailor jumps up on them with her front paws. Handler scratches her neck and she leans into their body attempting to go belly up while on their lap. Handler has her sit and she is rewarded. She is easily releashed and returned to kennel without issue. 4/11/25: Sailor is jumping and barking at her kennel door as handler approaches. She is able to be leashed with ease and she pulls hard on the way to the yard causing her to have to stop to catch her breathed so she would not pass out. After catching her breath, she is able to go up the stairs and continues to pull to the second pen. She is able to be transferred to a drag leash and she would chase after all the pigeons she saw. When the pigeons would fly away, she would try to catch them by jumping high in the air. She would approach the handler and jump up to demand for treats. She would chase after the treats the handler would toss for her. She pulls hard on the way back to her kennel. 4/4/25: Sailor is standing at the front of the kennel with a loose and wiggly body. She takes a treat that is offered through the kennel bars and easily leashed. She is walked in the yard where she is aloof initially, sniffing and relieving herself. She will respond to handler when called and sit for treats. She is easily clipped and returned to kennel. 3/6/25: Sailor is lying down in her kennel as handler approaches. She then approaches the door with a loose wiggly body as the handler is unlocking it. She is able to be leashed with ease and taken outside on a walk. On the walk, she would pant heavily and would pull hard ahead. She would stop at every tree to sniff and explore. She would approach the handler and jump up to receive treats. She is then taken to the behavior room for her assessment. In the room, she was social by jumping up to receive pets and would jump down for treats when they were tossed on the ground. She had a loose wiggly body and loose wagging tail. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. She is returned back to her kennel with no issues.

Summary:: Friendly and allowed all handling
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Sailor so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the bite history we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Sailor has been observed to jump up on handlers in a social manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful Defensive/ Multiple Bite History/ Bite History (Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression.
