Tepig
Hello, my name is Tepig. My animal id is #218960. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 1/19/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormTepig is currently at risk due to behavior concerns. At the Care Centers Tepig has displayed high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety. He has been noted to seek exit, become tense, hackles raised, and hard stares towards handlers when they attempt to interact. Tepig has started showing signs of rapid deterioration as he has been observed to be hard barking whilst attempting to push up against the kennel bars with very dilated pupils and heavily panting. Medically, he is apparently overweight.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Tepig so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Tepig is reported to show "aggressive" behaviors but there are no details further elaborating. During his stay in the care center Tepig has been observed to be highly fearful noted to seek exit, become tense, and hard stare towards handlers when they attempt to interact. It is important to move slowly with Tepig, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
