Animal Profile

Peaches

Hello, my name is Peaches. My animal id is #250024. I am a male orange tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/19/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

Peaches is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. Peaches tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. A volunteer writes: Peaches is a handsome boy only about two years old and he was brought to us when his owner could no longer care for him. One thing to know about Peaches is he absolutely loves treats, and I think that is the way of his heart. He is a bit timid right now so he ate treats that were next to my hand and gave my hand a few sniffs, however is not ready to be pet yet. He enjoyed to remain in the comfort of his cubby, while giving my hand a few sniffs and eating all of the treats I gave him. I think he is a cat that would appreciate someone who is willing to be patient with him and let him take things at his own pace. He is trying his best to be brave in this new environment and I can tell how badly he wants to interact, but he is a bit hesitant to do so

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

KNOWN HISTORY:: Peaches was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment. Current owner had only had the cats for 3 weeks. Peaches lived with a female cat but was reported to mount her (this behavior is most likely due to not yet being neutered) and they needed to be kept separated. Previous owner stated that he is very skittish and resource guards his food, growling when eating food and treats. She stated that when she had been feeding him a churro, he nipped at her finger. The bite did not break skin.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: PRIOR ASSESSMENT 3/22/26 Peaches is laying in his den, body tense and pressing himself against the back wall as the assessor approaches. When the kennel door is opened and the den cover is lifted, he scoots further into the den, ears back, eyes wide, and pupils dilated. When the assessor lifts the den door, he begins low growling. He is tolerant of all petting with the scratcher tool but squints and leans away to avoid contact, continuing to low growl. Interaction is ended to reduce FAS. 4/3/26 Resting softly upon approach. Eyes wide with ears erect slightly tilting to the side when attempting to make contact with the scratcher tool. He slowly retreats avoiding contact lip licking in place. He ate offered treats when left alone. 4/4/26 Vol. Was lying down with stretched out legs and sleeping when approached. Woke up and looked at me when spoken to. Then sat up and hissed when cubby door open. Opened main door and offered dry treats. Ignored treats. Offered lickable treat on scratcher tool. Lip licking and sitting at back of cubby. Tense body if tried to pet with scratcher tool. End of interaction. 4/7/26 He was resting with a squint and avoided contact when approached, sitting up with his ears turned to the side. He chose to keep his distance but did eat the offered treats once left alone, and the interaction was ended to help reduce stress. 4/10/26 Vol. Behind litter box, eyes 1/2 closed, head up. Put squeeze treat by cubby entry - no reaction. Approached through cubby door with hard treat on scratcher tool - he watched but stayed still. Dropped treats and approached with tool - he sat erect, squeezing against back wall, turning his head away. I could barely see his face. Since he was not feeling well, I did not push it - let tool rest, removed and ended interaction. 4/14/26 Vol. Sitting behind litter box in the small cubby when I approached kennel, then ran into larger cubby. Attempted to give him Squeeze-ups but he backed away from the clicker and ran back behind the litter box. Shied away from the scratcher tool. Wasn’t interested in playing with the cat dancer or the laser. Did eat a dish of tuna and got some slow blinks in return. 4/16/26 Vol. Peaches is sitting upright in the back of the cubby, tail wrapped tightly around, eyes wide but pupils, ears and whiskers are neutral. Eyes purée on the tool suspiciously, sniffs it, but does not lick, and ignores crunchy treats. They then tensed up and began to lip lick. Ended interaction. Needs more time. GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Shy ,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Peaches has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. Peaches has been reported by the previous owner to appear to resource guard food and treats.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to behavior observed in the shelter and reports of resource guarding, adult only home.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Peaches is standing at the front of his hidey cubby, tail low and pupils dilated, backing away when the assessor opens the cubby door. He remains at the back of the cubby when he is spoken to, wrapping his tail around his body and lip licking. Peaches is tolerant of petting on the head and cheeks with the tool but does not engage, leaning away to avoid contact. When petting is attempted with the assessor's hands, he tenses more, eyes widening and holding up a paw as he looks towards the portal exit as if to flee. He is given time to settle before the assessor attempts interaction again. With lots of coaxing, he does once again slowly approach the front, looking around and sniffing the air before backing away again, sitting upright pressed against the back wall. When the kennel door is closed and the interaction is ended, he comes to the front of the main area of the kennel. He allows the assessor to slowly place crunchy treats in front of him through the door, quickly beginning to eat them. When the assessor opens the door to attempt interaction once more, he runs back into the cubby, sits upright, and begins lip licking. Interaction is ended to reduce FAS. Peaches tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
