Orange Soda

Hello, my name is Orange Soda. My animal id is #229485. I am a desexed male orange tabby cat at the . The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 months old.

Orange Soda is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. He is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for his mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid (further) bite/scratch incidents.

My purr motor is always running! I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. A volunteer writes: 1-2-3... All eyes on me! Orange Soda needs everyone's attention because he has something really important to say. So, if he could just have 5 minutes right now... Ok, everyone ready? Let me check if he is. Repeatedly reaching his paws out of his condo door to tap my head and fix my hair, Orange Soda is trying really, really hard to get someone to notice him. Patience and manners may not be his strong suit, but playtime and cuddles are. When I opened his condo door, Orange Soda excitedly exclaimed his joy by tucking his head into my hand and exaggeratedly rolling onto his side for pets. We played for a little while with his pipe cleaner feather, but mostly what Orange Soda wants is a chance to be seen.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

KNOWN HISTORY:: Orange Soda was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment. On 6/11/25, two people were reportedly attacked by Orange Soda; however, limited details regarding the events leading up to the incident were provided. The first victim stated that her injuries resulted in 7 staples to her head, 6 staples to the lip, and scratches on the face and arm. The second victim stated that she was scratched and bit by Orange Soda. Orange Soda was adopted on 7/26/25 and he was reported to be very sweet and wanting pets most of the time, following the owners everywhere but he would play rough ("bitey" tendencies) out of nowhere at times and without warning. They bought wands to address this potential behavior challenge and to show him how to interact with appropriate play items. On 7/31/25 at 12:30 pm, Owner's husband was opening a cardboard package when the cat jumped to his face and scratched him in the forehead. The husband ran and fell while the cat chased after him. Then the cat scratched his leg, which resulted to blood on the wall. He ran inside the bathroom and locked himself inside not knowing the cat made it inside as well. Then the husband ran out and locked the cat inside the bathroom. Other notes: The resident dog has been completely separated from Orange Soda, but the dog is getting more overwhelmed, anxious, and uneasy hearing and smelling Orange Soda in the house. Although they haven't fully interacted yet, the dog's behavior and Orange Soda's rough tendencies worry the adopters about the long term relationship between the two animals, so they we do not want to create an unsafe space for the dog or for Orange Soda. Upon intake: Orange Soda was going in circles inside his carrier. When the carrier was being opened he was purring and curious to his surroundings. With no handling involved, he walked straight into his den.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 6/16/25 FB47 Orange Soda was exhibiting normal behavior and mentation. 06/20/25 PRIOR ASSESSMENT Orange Soda was calmly sitting by the front upon approach. Alert with soft eyes. Ears relaxed and forward. He head bunts and body leans against the assessor's hand. Loose body with tail high. Ate offered treats. During pick up, he was calm and when settled back down he continued to tolerate more attention. 07/17/25 PRIOR ASSESSMENT Orange Soda's behavior has been consistent with the previous evaluation. He was sitting up at the front of the kennel with a soft body and eyes and then he softly meows, rubs his face on the door, and reaches his paw out to solicit attention. He eagerly accepts treats offered and head bunts for petting. He leans in in hard for cheek rubs and he is unbothered when stroking his body, but his tail is pilo-erect. During pick up, he is calm and relaxed, rests his front limbs on the assessor's arm, and allows petting all over when held and hugged for 10 seconds, but his tail swishes sideways. After placing him back down, he continues to appreciate more treats, petting, and cheek rubs. 8/7/25 FB32 Resting at back of kennel curled up with head tucked in and tail wrapped around body. Upon approach, he perks up, stretches his body, yawns, sits up, and rubs his face on the door to solicit attention. Ignores treats offered, gently head bunts for petting and leans in for cheek rubs. When stroking his body, he raises hips and tail in the air but his tail flicks and swishes. Tenses up when rotated around to attempt handling. During pick up, he rests his front limbs on the handler's arm, leans in for cheek rubs, continues swish his tail, and allows petting all over when held for 20 seconds. After placing him back down, he continues to appreciate more petting and cheek rubs.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Calm,Sweet,Affectionate,People oriented,Easy going,Curious

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Rough play,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Bite/scratch history: Before the first time he was brought to the shelter, he bit two people in a parking lot in separate incidents. However, this cat has not given us any reason in the shelter to be concerned with him, and the people who were injured didn't describe the circumstances or context of the incidents. It is also possible that environmental stressors connected to being outside might have contributed to these incidents. He had spent about 1 month in the Cat Adoption Alley, which can be stressful due to there being a lot of noise from neighboring dogs barking or walking past Orange Soda's kennel in the hallway; however, despite the overstimulating environment, Orange Soda continues to thrive in the shelter environment and tolerates all petting and handling. Unfortunately, after a few days after he was adopted, he was reported to play rough ("bitey" tendencies) and he was possibly triggered by the owner opening a cardboard package, which resulted in a bite/scratch incident involving the face and legs, chasing them until Orange Soda was eventually secured in the bathroom (see Known History above for more details). Another possible trigger is that, unlike in the shelter with Orange Soda being exposed to dogs in the surrounding environment, the owners had a resident dog that they reported was getting overwhelmed, anxious, and uneasy with Orange Soda. Although they haven't fully interacted, Orange Soda's close proximity to a dog during the new home adjustment period may have contributed to his overall stress in the home. Overstimulation: he may swish his tail sideways and his tail may become pilo-erect. He may have been triggered by the loud, sudden noise of opening the cardboard package.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home,No dogs

Recommendations comments:: Adult only home due to severity of multiple reported bite/scratch history. No dogs due to being a possible trigger. Counselor discretion is advised.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Orange Soda was lying down in the front of the kennel resting upon approach with his front limbs extended forward and his head down. When spoken to and opening the door, he trills, gets up to stretch his body, and hovers over the front entrance. He accepts treats offered and head bunts for petting. He leans in hard and purrs for cheek rubs. When stroking his body, he raises his hips and tail in the air. When reaching around his body and rotating him sideways, he tenses up a little bit but remains calm. During pick up, he relaxes, rests his front limbs on the assessor's arm, purrs and leans in for cheek rubs, and allows petting all over with his tail slightly swishing sideways when held and hugged for 15 seconds. After placing him back down, he continues to appreciate more treats, petting, and cheek rubs. Orange Soda interacts with the assessor, solicits attention, is easy to handle, and tolerates all petting in the shelter environment (see Enrichment Notes above for additional examples); however, he has a severe bite/scratch history that precludes placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, scratch, or bite in the previous home environments. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
