Animal Profile

Cloud

Hello, my name is Cloud. My animal id is #222209. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 3/12/2025.

Cloud is at-risk due to behavior concerns. Cloud arrived at the care centers as a stray. Upon intake he was loose, wiggly, and allowed all handling and petting but was a bit head shy. He has remained social with handlers during his stay, but has shown signs of deterioration as well as a low threshold for arousal. Cloud has been reported to turn towards handlers and jump up, along with head whipping with an open mouth when pet around the neck. When attempting to leash, he has been difficult to redirect and will sometimes leash bite intensely. Treats are only effective sometimes. In kennel, Cloud has been observed to cover his linens with feces and blood left behind from him constantly pawing at the door. Medically, he is healthy. Cloud has a $500 stipend to be paid to a New Hope Partner if pulled.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy.

Summary:: 3/19/25: cloud greets another dog at the gate with a tense body and wagging tail. He toe taps initially but them freezes, tensing further.

Summary (5):: 4/15/25: Cloud is sitting at the front of his kennel when handler approaches. He gets up and begins jumping up and down in kennel barking. Handler uses a treat lure to leash Cloud and he ignores the treat and goes to the leash with an open mouth and paws it. Handler grabs spray cheese and sprays it on the bars and Cloud starts to lick it. Handler is able to place the leash over his head and the kennel is opened. Cloud pulls his way out and is brought to the street. He relieves himself and pulls very hard. Cloud walks back and forth on the street running forward and bouncing around. Handler scatters treats and he stops to eat them. He jumps on handler and they turn away from him. Cloud continues to pull hard as he is brought back to the shelter. He stares at a dog across the street with a neutral body. He is walked back inside and returned to kennel without issue. 04/13/25: Cloud is at the front of his kennel barking and jumping at the kennel door as handler approaches. He is initially difficult to redirect when handler first begins offering treats but he progressively begins accepting treats more and is leashed while distracted with treats. Due to Cloud jumping up when being leashed the leash is caught under his leg so handler walks him into the behavior office and a second handler assists in leashing him while removing the initial leash. Cloud accepts treats tossed and follows them out to the street for his walk, once outside he pulls hard and pants heavily when walking. Cloud begins coughing and stumbling while walking so handler immediately stops to let him catch his breathe, however Cloud continues pulling forward. Cloud walks past people on the street without issue and occasionally stops to use the bathroom on his walk. As the walk progresses Cloud begins pulling with less intensity, he walks for a bit more before being brought back to kennel and returns without issue.

Summary (6):: 4/12/25 (late entry)- ACS attempted to leash Cloud. He grabbed the leash and was tugging it into kennel, bending the ACS finger backwards. ACS was ok. They ask for K9 behavior to pull him. K9 behavior handler approached kennel, Cloud is at the front with a neutral body. They present a treat and he takes it with slight pressure. When handler presents the leash Cloud follows it looking at it. Handler uses a large treat lure and he was easily leashed. He pulled hard exiting the room. When in the elevator he jumped at handler a couple of times with an open mouth, handler tossed treats and he went to eat those. He was taken for a street walk. He pulls hard and zig zags sniffing around on the walk. He would randomly jump at/ on handler, they would toss treats and he would go eat them. Cloud has no reaction to stimuli. When handler goes to pet his neck, he does a head flip with an open mouth. Cloud gets the zoomies on the street, he then jumps up handler. They toss treats, he just sniffs them then goes back to zoomies. Handler present a treat again and has Cloud sit, he is rewarded. He is easily clipped and pulls hard returning to kennel without further issue. 04/12/25: Cloud is at the front of his kennel barking and pawing at the kennel door as handler approaches. Handler notes that Clouds kennel is covered in feces and the kennel door is lined with feces and blood left behind from Clouds constant pawing at the door. He is leashed while distracted with treats and taken to the street for his walk. During the walk Cloud pulls moderately and stops to use the bathroom occasionally. He walks past people without issue but when spotting a dog will fixate on them even from a significant distance away and is difficult to redirect. He walks for a while and accepts treats offered by handler while walking, he then turns to handler and pulls toward them but when shown an empty hand he continues walking. He turns to handler one more time when finishing using the bathroom. He approaches handler and sits close to their legs after handler picks up after them. Handler continues walking and brings Cloud back to the shelter, he is clipped and returned to kennel without issue. 4/5/25: Cloud is jumping and barking at his kennel door as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats and is taken downstairs for a walk outside. On the walk, he would pull hard ahead and would continuously turn and stop to sniff the handler's leg and feet. He would stare at people and dogs that passed by with a neutral body frame. He pulled on the way back upstairs to his kennel.

Summary (7):: 3/19/25: Cloud is lying down in his kennel. When handler approaches he stands up and approaches the front with a neutral body. He jumps up on his hind legs and is lured down to all fours with a treat. He is then leashed and taken out to the driveway. He walks alongside the handler and sniffs his surroundings. Cloud relieves himself and is walked around the perimeter to the front for a gate greet. He is then walked back to his kennel and returned without issue. 3/14/25- Cloud is at the front of the kennel with a neutral body, he dodges the leash as handler attempts to leash and jumps on his leash door. Handler uses a treat lure and he finally leashed. He is taken for a street walk, he sees a dog in the drive way while exiting. He pulls towards them with a neutral body, watching them as they walk by. Handler is able to pull him away and exit. He zig zags on the street sniffing around with a moderate/ to hard pulling. He is aloof with handler and doesn't take any treats offered. He sees another dog on the street and focuses on them with no vocalization. Handler walks in the street ti return and once back in the driveway, he sees another dog. He again has a slight pull towards them and when going around a van Cloud looks under the van to watch the dog passes. He is taken for his assessment where he is aloof with handlers at first but becomes more social throughout interaction. He shies away when being collared and handlers use spray cheese to distract which he finally is collared. He is easily releashed and returned to kennel. He does plant momentarily outside his kennel and pulls towards the neighboring kennel with a neutral body. Handler tosses treats but Cloud shows no interest, handler muscled him in. 3/13/25: Cloud is at the front of his kennel as handlers approach, he is offered treats which he accepts as handler unlocks kennel door. When leashing Cloud initially shakes off the leash when it touches his head but with more treats is distracted and leashed successfully. Cloud exits kennel and walks out to the hall, he looks around with a low posture and freezes momentarily. Cloud continues this behavior as he walks down the hall which at the time is very active, occasionally stopping to stare at someone and flinching at fast movements occasionally. He is brought to the driveway and walks alongside handlers pulling mildly. He stops to urinate frequently and will turn to second handler who walks behind Cloud and will hunch over slightly while giving slight whale eye. Cloud is taken on the street and continues to urinate and sniff around, he continues to flinch at loud noises and fast movements and is overall very hypervigilant. After walking a bit he is brought back inside, Cloud begins stopping to look behind himself more frequently but walks into his room and to the front of his kennel. Handler tosses treats for him but he ignores them, so handler uses slight muscle to get him into kennel.

Summary:: loose wiggly body in airline crate, allows leashing with ease, allows some petting but is head shy

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Cloud so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No Young Children (under 13): Due to Cloud's tendencies to become over aroused when excited, we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal,Handling/touch sensitivity

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/Touch Sensitivity: Cloud is reported by staff to be shy around the head and will move away and flinch when moving around that area. It is important to always go slow and give Cloud the option to walk away from any social interaction. He should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Cloud's choice to approach a new person or thing. Cloud may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful/Potential for Defensive Aggression: Cloud was reported to growl and hard bark at his finders when first being brought to MACC. Cloud should never be forced to interact, he should always be given the opportunity to walk away from situations or people he finds uncomfortable. We recommend a slow approach and we recommend ONLY force-free, reward-based training methods for Cloud. More aversive techniques are likely to increase fear, increase the risk of aggression, and decrease Cloud's quality of life. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Leash Biting: Cloud has been observed to bite and tug the leash intensely while in kennel. This behavior is not able to be redirected easily. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners. Low Threshold for Arousal: During Cloud's assessment he has been observed to pant excessively and becomes aroused when offered toys which becomes difficult to divert. Please see handout on Arousal.
