Animal Profile

Cherry Garcia

Hello, my name is Cherry Garcia. My animal id is #233503. I am a male white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 8/3/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Cherry Garcia is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Cherry Garcia arrived at the Care Center as a stray. Initially upon intake, Cherry Garcia was noted to be somewhat fearful, but social with staff and allowed handling. While Cherry Garcia is easy to be leashed, he is also noted to fixate on random objects on walks, such as trash left behind food, or toys. Earlier in his stay, Cherry Garcia had surgery to remove a foreign body, a toy approximately 5 inches in length. Since then Cherry Garcia has continued to show low threshold for arousal; he scavenges or fixates on random items on walks. This has also caused concern for him to be safely handled. On one occasion, Cherry Garcia fixated on a discarded cup on the street, when the staff member used leash pressure to pull him away, Cherry Garcia head whipped and began mouthing the handler's clothing and limbs with escalating intensity (bruising but no broken skin). Cherry Garcia continues to be highly social with staff and treat motivated. Medically, Cherry Garcia does have cherry eyes.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy!

He follows treats handler tosses into the elevator and out to the street for his walk. While outside Cherry pulls hard and will stare at people passing but does not lunge or pull hard toward them. Cherry sniffs around the street intently and attempts to pick up an orange peel left on the ground but is kept away. After walking for a while he is brought back inside, Cherry begins fixating on handlers hand expecting treats and sits while barking and vocalizing impatiently for treats. His leash is clipped before returning to kennel without issue. 09/06/25: Cherry Garcia is wiggly bodied as handler approaches kennel door. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Cherry Garcia so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No young children (under 5),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 5): Due to poor impulse control and fearful behavior we recommend a home with no young children. New Hope Partner: Due to low threshold for arousal, and previous history of mouthing with high pressure, we recommend placement with a New Hope Partner.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful,Anxiety,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: When attempting to redirect with leash pressure away from items in his position, he has at times shown strong resource guarding behaviors such as growling and mouthing handlers with high pressure We recommend trade up for treats and positive re-enforcement to get Cherry Garcia to focus on you instead of what he is fixating on. Please see hand-out on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners: Cherry has been observed to jump up on handlers. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful: Cherry has been observed to be hypervigilant with a tucked tail. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Cherry would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Anxiety: Cherry was observed to be panting and vocal throughout his assessment. If Cherry displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. Low threshold for arousal: Cherry Garcia has been noted to persistently fixate and pick-up random items, such as treats, food or even garbage on walks. We recommend muzzle training Cherry Garcia, or other positive reinforcement methods to redirect Cherry Garcia's focus. Please see hand-out on Arousal.
