Brady
Hello, my name is Brady. My animal id is #234232. I am a male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 3 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/13/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal circumstance - rescued from neglect.
Brady is at risk due to behavior concerns. His previous owner reported him to pull very hard on leash, and is anxious in the home. He also described him to be playful with children but will growl and hard bark at cats specifically. Brady has also displayed fearful defensive behavior both in the care centers and in a home environment, observed to hard bark and growl. Throughout his stay he has displayed new behaviors, sometimes inconsistently, indicating deterioration. He has been observed to leash bite on occasion, will fixate on kennels, has refused to walk on the street during walks, jumped up and snapped at handlers hand while locking the kennel door, and has been observed to be pacing back and forth and barking during quiet time. He has also been noted to have scavenging tendencies, picking up sticks or items on the sidewalk and takes treats harshly. Medically, he apparently has dental disease and diarrhea.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I need a home without cats or small animals. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. Not only do I pull at heart strings, but I also pull on leash! I will need someone to help me with my leash manners. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

Date of initial:: 8/13/2025
Summary:: Tense in kennel + hard barking, unable leashed. Opted to sedate
ENERGY LEVEL:: Brady is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Brady.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior and tendances to take treats with hard pressure we recommend an adult only home. No Cats: Due to hard barking and growling towards cats we recommend a home with no cats.
Potential challenges: : Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling
Potential challenges comments:: Mouthiness: Brady has been observed to take treats with hard pressure. We recommend giving treats with a flat hand and to use force-free, reward-based training methods to teach Brady to take treats with a softer mouth. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Fearful Defensive: Brady's previous owner states that he will bark and growl when disturbed while sleeping or when startled. While in care Brady has been observed to hard bark towards handlers. It is important to move slowly with Brady, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Anxiety: Brady's previous owner states that he experiences general anxiety. If Brady displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash reactivity: Brady's previous owner states that he will hard bark and growl when seeing a cat. Brady will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other towards cats. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Pulling: Brady's previous owner states that he will pull hard while on leash. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage, and that they be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
