Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Kyra is at risk for behavioral reasons. Kyra has displayed fearful behavior at the care center and seems uncomfortable around strangers. Kyra would be best suited for placement with a new hope partner that can provide a low stress environment and behavior modification. Medically, Kyra has allergies which may need further care.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A volunteer writes: Kyra is a lovely flower just waiting to bloom! She was shy at first and a bit hesitant to come out of her kennel, but with each passing minute together Kyra showed us what a wonderful dog she can be! Kyra loves to play, especially tug, and she minds her manners when playing. Kyra loves her snacks and will eagerly sit for them. She was polite and respectful to the dog in the pen next to us and dogs we passed, and she walks well on leash. As she warms up to you she loves to be in your lap for treats, hugs and but rubs. We loved spending time with her and know she will make and amazing pet for you and your family! Come meet this angel today at the Manhattan ACC!

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Kyra so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: During her stay at the care center, Kyra has displayed fearful behavior around unfamiliar people, often hard barking and growling when visitors and handlers approach her kennel. With time, Kyra has warmed up and become social and playful with select handlers. She has been learning and practicing cues such as “sit” and “touch”. She appears highly food motivated. Kyra recently appears highly stressed and frustrated when dogs pass her kennel and while seeing them in the play yard, hard barking, growling, and digging frantically at the gates, unable to distract with treats or settle until they are out of view.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Kyra is fearful at the care center and may be intimidated by children. She needs a slow approach and time to warm up. She should never be forced to interact with new people, and should be allowed to greet and initiate an interaction at her own pace. An adult-only home is recommended. Place with a New Hope partner: Kyra has displayed a low threshold for arousal at the care center, jumping up on handlers and escalating to hard mouthing them, having a hard time refocusing and settling. Due to this behavior, we recommend she be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Kyra to acclimate comfortably to her new environment, as she has displayed fearful behavior around unfamiliar people at the care center, often hard barking and growling when visitors and handlers approach her kennel; Force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing her to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Kyra presents with outside of the care centers.

Potential challenges: : Low threshold for arousal,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Kennel presence

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: While Kyra appears social with handlers, she is fearful of her environment, pancaking on the ground while being walked at the care center. At times, she has growled while approached by handlers in her kennel. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center, Kyra is reactive and barks at other dogs she passes while on leash and while in the play yard. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Kennel Presence: Kyra has been observed to lunge, growl and hard bark at other dogs and humans in the care center while in kennel. We cannot be certain if this behavior will present itself in a new home environment or in other stressful situations though we advise safe and appropriate management if it does. Low threshold for arousal: Kyra has displayed a low threshold for arousal at the care center, jumping up on handlers and escalating to hard mouthing them, having a hard time refocusing and settling. Please see handout on Low threshold for arousal. Basic manners/poor impulse control: Kyra has displayed a low threshold for arousal at the care center, jumping up on handlers and hard mouthing them. See handout on Basic Manners. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Kyra has displayed a low threshold for arousal at the care center, jumping up on handlers and escalating to hard mouthing them. Please see handout on Mouthiness.
