Animal Profile

Meowmeowcita

Hello, my name is Meowmeowcita. My animal id is #215566. I am a desexed female gray tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 8 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 7/11/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - not house trained.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Meowmeowcita is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and has not warmed up greatly despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers as well as behavior modification relating to more complex litter box issues.

Is this cat having litter box issues?: Yes

If yes, Please elaborate:: Access to a litterbox in the home: Yes Litter boxes in the home: 2 Litter box location(s): Living room Type of litter box: Uncovered, Covered Type of litter: Unscented, Pine Spraying: No Able to see outdoor cats: Yes Accident frequency: Daily Frequency info: Accidents occur every day and every night, usually, but not always when I'm not home or sleeping Type of accident: Urinates outside the box, Urinates on furniture, Defecates outside the box Accidents began: Past few weeks Additional info: They began at the beginning of June - she escaped out of the window and spent a week with a pack of stray cats in the neighborhood. The litter box accidents started when she came back inside Litter box scooped: Once a day Litter boxes shared: 1 box per cat + 1 extra Litterbox relocated: No Litterbox location type: Quiet, Easily accessible Seen by a vet: Yes Diagnosis: The vet couldn't identify anything that would cause the litter box issues Tried behavior modification: Yes Behavior modification type: Added additional litter boxes, Cleaned the entire box, Changed the type of litter, Scooped more often, Moved the box to another area in the home, Blocked areas that were soiled , Cleaned soiled areas with an enzymatic cleaner Additional info: I also tried sprinkling her food on the furniture she was peeing and pooping on, spending more time at home, and developing more of a routine for her Suspected cause: She escaped out of a window over a month ago and stayed outside for a week. The accidents have been occurring since I was able to bring her back inside. They also occur when I leave the house and when I'm sleeping. I think she wants to play with the cats outside and got used to not using a litter box when she was outside. I think she also wants more constant attention from me (I go into an office three days per week) because even if I'm home all day, she'll pee on the couch if I leave for even half an hour and she also pees on my backpack that I take when I leave the house.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/30/24 PREVIOUS ASSESSMENT: Meowmeowcita was on top of the shelf, hunched with dilated pupils, staring past the assessor. She sniffed treats, but then hissed. She then allowed petting on her head and along her back with the scratcher tool. She remains tense and in place. 7/20/25 Vol. Meowmeowcita was in her bed, with her head held low so that it was almost hidden from view. I offered treats and Squeeze Up but she was not interested in them. She tolerated all petting on her head and back, opening and closing her eyes. She did not move out of her position in the bed at all. 7/22/25 FB58 Laying in her box with a tense face and body, eyes wide and lip licks. She pulls away from tool pets on her head but then remains tense and tolerates a few touches on her her head. I offer some dry treats in her box and let her eat when she is alone. 7/26/25 FB79 On the top part of her kennel, Meow hissed with her tail tightly wrapped and her eyes wide when i open the kennel door. She quickly jumps down int other bed when i attempt to pet her and lays with her ears flat but slow blinks after i start speaking softly. she sniffs the tool when it was brought close to her and tolerated pets on her head with no reaction but continues to watch me close with her eyes still wide. Meow then sniffed my hand when i brought it close and tolerated more pets on her head while she very slowly/slightly leaned in for more. She then ate treats calmly out of my hand. 7/29/25 FB58 Laying in her bed with a slightly tense face, sniffs the treat offered and accepts pets along her head and cheeks. I place more treats down on her bed and she sniffs at them but doesn't eat them until I close the door and let her eat on her own. 8/04/25 Vol Meowmeowcita was stretched out in her bed, with a front paw dangling over the edge. I opened the door and put Temptations in the bed. I petted her head and body and she accepted the attention. After a few minutes, she ate her treats. She did not leave the bed at all during the interaction. She is very subdued and sweet natured. 8/12/25 FB58 Laying in her box with a mostly neutral face and body, sniffs my hand and accepts pets on her head and cheeks. With the scratcher tool, she accepts pets on her head and cheek but turns to look and tenses when the tool passes along her side and lower back. I offer treats which she eats, play with the laser (shows some interest but doesn't get up to play), leave the feather wand with her (hear some jingling), and leave her a treat enrichment tube. 8/17/25 FB79 Curled inside of her bed/box, Meowmeowcita has a neutral body and looked up at me when i opened the kennel door. She looks around the room briefly with wide eyes and forward ears. she lowers her head when i reach in to pet but leans in when getting pet on her cheek/neck and when i pet down and around her body she starts to shift her weight slightly exposing her side/belly. 8/19/25 FB58 Meowmeowcita displays consistent behavior - D/C

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow

VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty

CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Shy ,Sweet,Playful,Curious,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Inappropriate elimination,Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Meowmeowcita is reported to have litter box accidents since the "beginning of June - she escaped out of the window and spent a week with a pack of stray cats in the neighborhood. The litter box accidents started when she came back inside". She has access to two litter boxes in the home located in the living room - one covered and another uncovered with unscented pine litter. Litter box is scooped once a day. She is able to see cats outside. These accidents will occur daily. She will urinate outside the box, urinates on furniture, and defecate outside the box. She has been seen by the vet about this issue and the vet couldn't identify anything that would cause the litter box issues. The owner has tried to modify the behavior by; adding additional litter boxes, cleaning the entire box, changing the type of litter, scooping more often, moving the box to another area in the home, blocked areas that were soiled , and cleaned soiled areas with an enzymatic cleaner. Client has also tried sprinkling her food on the furniture she was peeing and pooping on, spending more time at home, and developing more of a routine for her. Client suspects the cause is that she escaped out of a window over a month ago and stayed outside for a week. The accidents have been occurring since she was able to bring her back inside. They also occur when she leaves the house and when she is sleeping. She thinks she wants to play with the cats outside and got used to not using a litter box when she was outside. She think she also wants more constant attention from her (she goes into an office three days per week) because even if she is home all day, she'll pee on the couch if she leaves for even half an hour and she also pees on her backpack that she takes when she leaves the house. There is a chance that this behavior is a combination of Meowmeowcita having become accustomed to or developing a preference for substrates similar to those if the dirt outside and thus now having an aversion to her litter box. As well as doing "associative marking" or choosing to mark items that to her carry a lot of the owner's scent. This can be in response to the stress of having been outside for a week and not having been with the owner and attempting to reestablish that connection and bond by mixing scents. The timing of it happening most times while she is not around the owner even if for minutes seems to indicated that there is an insecure attachment post escape and return. While in shelter, Meowmeowcita's litter box habits were monitored over a 2-weeks after she had adjusted for a period to the shelter environment. In this time, she had some time of litter box accident 8 out of 14 days most outside the box and on linens. Meowmeowcita appears to show signs of touch sensitivity along her back and will turn quickly and tense when pet down her back. She does appreciate and lean into head and cheek pets.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Meowmeowcita would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Meowmeowcita was nursing her kittens, lying calmly with a relaxed face, and accepted all petting while eating squeeze up treats. She flinched slightly when first approached but otherwise remain calm and continued to allow all petting throughout. 7/15/25 Meowmeowcita was hunched in her litterbox as the assessor approached, body and face tense, pupils dilated and feet and tail tucked. Meowmeowcita hissed when spoken to and she flattened her ears completely as the kennel door opened. Meowmeowcita tolerated petting along her head and back with the scratcher tool while flattening her ears even further back and tucking her head into her body. Meowmeowcita hissed again and pick up was not attempted to avoid stress. 8/14/25 Upon re-eval, Meowmeowcita is sitting at the front of her cage and vocalizes ad the assessor approaches, however once the cage door is opened, she jumps back into her box. She watches the assessor with a slightly tense face and ears forward and remains in place when offered the assessor's hand. When pet along her head, she softens and begins to lean in, accepting pets along her head, cheeks, and chin - rubbing her cheeks and gums along the assessor's hand and stretching her chin out slightly for more scratches. When the assessor uses the scratcher tool to pet down her side, she tenses and turns her head quickly to watch their hand. She reacts similarly to the Assess-A-Hand but is slightly mouthy with it (more out of curiosity). When the assessor uses the bite gloves, for some reason she begins to purr and lean into the touch, still slightly tense but she shoves her head under the assessor's hand for head pets and allows pets along her back, raising her hips and tail base at times. Finally when the assessor tries a few pets with their hand (covered in their sleeve), she again is tense and stares at their hand the whole time she is being touched. Pick up is not attempted. while she has made some progress and appears to be more open to soliciting attention, with her touch sensitivity and unknown escalation level - at this time, the behavior team feels that Level 3* is still appropriate. Meowmeowcita tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
