Hemmis
Hello, my name is Hemmis. My animal id is #248918. I am a male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/4/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormHemmis is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Hemmis has not acclimated well to the shelter environment despite the best efforts to keep him comfortable. Hemmis initially presented as highly fearful and shut down, needing to be carried into the building during his intake. He would display similar behaviors when removed from the kennel, bauling in the middle of the kennel room. As his stay progressed, Hemmis has been observed to spin in his kennel and has been jumping up and barking at the dog on the other side of the wall of the kennel. Once leashed, he baulks again but then escalates to snapping at other dogs' paws that are sticking out of their kennels. Medically, Hemmis is apparently healthy.

Hemmis came into the care center as an owner surrender. He is described as a social, affectionate, very active and playful dog who can be very fearful at times. He loves going for a car ride and receiving belly rubs. He allows his family to bathe him, brush him, and trim his nails, loves bath time and water. Hemmis fearfulness while on walks in the prior home has reflected in the care center environment. Hemmis is displaying significant stress and fear in the care center environment, including heavy panting, pacing, spinning in his kennel, and vocalizing. When taken out of his kennel he is noted tp balk, freeze, or refuse to move, and appears highly sensitive to the presence of other dogs, frequently barking or reacting to neighboring kennels. Once in a quieter space, Hemmis is able to settle somewhat and has engaged with enrichment such as a lick mat, though he often remains vigilant and focused on exiting the room. His behavior suggests that the shelter environment is overwhelming and contributing to his heightened stress levels. Hemmis would benefit from a New Hope placement that can provide a calm, low-stimulation.

Date of assessment:: 3/10/2026
Summary:: 3/10/25: Due to Hemmis fearfulness, a handling assessment will not be conducted at this time. ***3/5/26: Hemmis is taken to the behavioral office for a handling assessment. When going into the office, he pancaked in the hallway and had to be picked up and taken to the behavioral office. Once in the room he allowed the handlers to collar in and allowed light petting, but remained fearful. Based on the fearfulness Hemmis displayed a handling assessment will be conducted at a later time.***
Summary (7):: 3/12: When a handler approaches Hemmis's kennel he is standing and heavily panting. When he sees the handler, Hemmis begins barking and jumping up on the front left corner of his kennel, as if he were attempting to scale it. He does this repeatedly while alternating between barking rapidly and heavy panting. After several jumps, he begins spinning in circles before returning to the corner. He does not take the initial treats the handler tosses in to break the pattern, but he will accept cheese. Once he is done eating, he repeats the aforementioned behaviors. 3/7/26: Hemmis is spinning around in his kennel while heavy panting as handler approaches. He barks and jumps up and down towards the dog in kennel next to him at his kennel wall. He does not approach the front to be leashed and the handler is able to get the leash loop over his head while he is still barking towards the wall. Once leashed, he comes forward to the front and then baulks to ground in the middle of his kennel room and refuses to move forward. He tries to back away and attempts to snap at other dogs paws that were sticking out of their kennels. He has no interest in treats and is finally able to exit the room when the handler squeakers a squeaker multiple times. He is then able to enter the behavior room. In the room, he is able to be transferred to a drag lead and he would pace around with heavy panting while whimpering. He would constantly approach the door and begin to vocalize with whimpering and heavy panting. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues. He goes back to barking at the dog in kennel next to him as the handler locks the door and walks away. 3/6/26: Hemmis is spinning around in his kennel while heavy panting as handler approaches. He comes forward to the front and is able to be leashed with ease. He then baulks to ground in the middle of his kennel room and refuses to move forward. He has no interest in treats and is finally able to exit the room when another handler approaches. He is then able to enter the behavior room. In the room, he is able to be transferred to a drag lead and he would pace around with heavy panting while whimpering. He is comfortable approaching the handlers in the room but doesn't interact with them. He is then able to engage in a cheese lick mat. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues. 3/5/26 (Assessment): Hemmis was standing in kennel with a tense body as handler approached. Handler was able to leash Hemmis and pull him from kennel. Walking out of room Hemmis kept looking at the other dogs with wide eyes and would lip lick. Once in hallway Hemmis stopped and would not continue and would not return to kennel. Assessor came to help and was able to carry Hemmis into the behavior room. Based on the fearfulness that Hemmis was displaying it was decided to do his assessment at a later date. He was returned to kennel

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We recommend Hemmis be placed in an adult-only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Hemmis has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Kennel presence
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful:In the prior home he is noted on walks to be fearful of strangers, vehicles, and loud noises with his reaction being to stop and lay o the ground. If very scared he may run away. Hemmis is noted in the care center to baulks to ground in the middle of his kennel room and refuses to move forward when taken out oh his kennel. Training should focus on slow, confidence-building exposure, reinforcing voluntary movement, and maintaining low-pressure transitions to help reduce avoidance and build trust. Please see the handout on decompression period. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Hemmis is noted to kennel fight neighboring dogs when coming out of his kennel.Training should emphasize structured, low-arousal exit routines, increasing distance from other dogs, and reinforcing calm behaviors during transitions. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Anxiety/Kennel presence:Hemmis is spinning around in his kennel while heavy panting as handler approaches. He barks and jumps up and down towards the dog in kennel next to him at his kennel wall.Training and management should focus on reducing visual stimuli, providing calming enrichment, and reinforcing relaxed behavior to help decrease his anxiety and improve his ability to settle. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety.
