Judge
Hello, my name is Judge. My animal id is #231607. I am a desexed male black dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 7/9/2025.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.
Judge is at risk for behavior reasons. Judge has been highly fearful with potential for defensive aggression, only allowing for minimal handling. He gives clear warnings, becoming very stiff and hard staring at staff. He is not adjusting well to the shelter environment. Medically, he has healing puncture wounds and has been treated for otitis externa.

Pre-Screener Form Judge is at risk for behavior reasons. Judge is a 4-year-old male who arrived at the shelter highly fearful and shut down. The environment was overwhelming for him at first, and he kept his distance from both staff and volunteers. With time and consistency, Judge has begun to show signs of progress. He's formed quiet bonds with a few trusted staff members, now walks well on leash, takes treats gently, and will occasionally engage in short bursts of play. These small steps reflect his willingness to try, even when the world still feels uncertain. Judge will need a calm, experienced adopter who is familiar with dog body language and is committed to a slow, patient decompression process. He's not yet ready for a busy home or high expectations - he needs structure, understanding, and a low-pressure environment where he can continue to build confidence.

ENERGY LEVEL:: in the shelter Judge has a medium energy level.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: NO CHILDREN (UNDER 13) Due to how uncomfortable Judge is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. PLACE WITH A NEW HOPE PARTNER Judge has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: HANDLING/TOUCH SENSITIVITY Judge has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times, especially when a person is reaching over him. It is important to always go slow and give dog the option to walk away from any social interaction. Judge should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Judge’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Judge may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Please see handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. FEARFUL/POTENTIAL FOR DEFENSIVE AGGRESSION Judge gives clear warnings when he is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Judge, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Judge to initiate interactions with new people. She should never be forced to greet or to interact if he is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression.
