Animal Profile

Caroline

Hello, my name is Caroline. My animal id is #235694. I am a female brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 8/31/2025.

Caroline is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Caroline in the care center has not been acclimating despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. In her kennel, Caroline is observed jumping up and spinning off the kennel walls while panting heavily. She displays ongoing kennel stress, including digging and banging at the front of her kennel door and attempting to pull her water bowl tray into the kennel. Caroline is social with staff but continues to struggle to settle and acclimate in the care center environment. Medically, Caroline is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am.

Summary:: Due to Caroline entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 10/16/25 Caroline is introduced to a female helper dog while off leash at the care center. Caroline will present bounces and play bows along the gate line before the female dog is guided into her pen. The female dog will approach Caroline exuberantly as does Caroline, approaching with a loose, wiggly body. Caroline sniffs the female dog and when the female dog sniffs her, she visibly becomes uncomfortable. Caroline hides her genitals displaying whale eyes as the female dog sniffs her, appearing nervous as her body tenses up. Caroline will whip around and snarl and both dogs are separated. Caroline will shake off before being returned back to kennel, concluding the interaction. 09/04/25: Caroline is introduced to two novel male dogs. At the gate Caroline approaches cautiously with a high curved tail. Both dogs will engage in mutual greetings. Caroline will immediately walk away from the gate, displacing. While the novel male remains at the gate. Caroline will begin to appease by sneezing, then scratching with her back turned and eventually rolling on her back on the turf. Caroline does not reapproach the gate. Both dogs are separated concluding the interaction. During her second interaction, her approach will remain consistent. For more context, Caroline is muzzled and the gate is opened. The novel male will approach with a soft frame and wagging tail. Both dogs will meet face to face. Caroline will immediately crate distance walking to the next pen. The interaction is concluded and both dogs are separated.

Summary (6):: 10/16/25: Caroline is at the back of her kennel laying down when approached, stretches and begins to walk to the front. Caroline is walked out of kennel and to the play yard, pulling mildly. Caroline is brought out for a dog-dog greet, and is highly social with handlers, leaning in for petting when waiting for the other dog. (See Dog-Dog for more info). Caroline is walked back to kennel, but pancakes in the middle of the hallway, needing to be coaxed all the way back with treat/praise.

Summary (7):: 10/8: Caroline is seen jumping up and spinning off her kennel walls while panting heavily. 10/07/25: Caroline is noted to display kennel stress, digging/banging in front of her kennel door and trying to pull her water bowl tray into the kennel 10/07/25 Caroline is standing on all fours displaying a neutral body as the handler approaches. Caroline is easily leashed and taken out to the play yard. Caroline maintains a soft, neutral frame as she trots alongside the handler moderately. Upon entering the pens, she will explore and roll around on the turf. Caroline will take treats from the handler when administered and spit them out. Caroline Will allow petting, remaining soft as she approaches the handler and leans in. Caroline doesn't engage in any toys and after some time will linger next to the exit. Caroline is returned to the facility, entering the building as well as her kennel wioth no issue. 09/30/25: Caroline is standing at the front of her kennel, displaying a neutral frame as the handler leashes her with ease. She is then escorted to the ISO play yard where a drag leash is placed on her. The handler practices sit and focus cues, rewarding her with treats that contain her medication, which she eagerly accepts. The handler attempts toy engagement, but Caroline shows no interest. She explores the yard freely and is later observed rolling in the grass on her back. At the end of the session, Caroline is returned to her kennel safely without any issues. 9/11/25: Caroline is laying down in her kennel as handler approaches. She is able to come forward and is leashed with ease. She is then taken to the behavior room for her assessment. In the room, she is comfortable being collared and petted and would explore around the room. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. She is able to be taken back to her kennel with no issues. 9/4/25: Caroline is standing at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is able to be leashed with ease and is taken to the play yard for play group. In the yard, she has a tense body as she greets the other dog at the gate. She would avoid the other dog by disengaging. She would lower her body while still being tense when the dog approached her. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. She is able to return back to her kennel with no issues.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We reccomend Caroline be placed in an adult-only home at this time.

Potential challenges: : Fearful,Anxiety

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/Anxiety: During her assessment, Caroline initially explored the room with a tense body and offered hard stares at the helper, indicating discomfort and wariness. When called over, she remained aloof, lying down and displaying displacement behaviors such as "fake sleeping." Due to her intense, unbroken focus on the helper, the handler held onto her drag lead for safety. While she allowed both gentle and more enthusiastic handling, she remained stiff throughout and offered lip licks, signaling ongoing discomfort. These behaviors suggest underlying fear and anxiety, and she may benefit from slow, trust-building interactions and desensitization to new people and environments. Please see the handout on the decompression period and generalized anxiety.
