Modela
Hello, my name is Modela. My animal id is #220520. I am a desexed female black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 4 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/23/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person health - medical.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormModela is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Modela has not acclimated well to the shelter environment despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. She persistently bites and pulls on her water bowls or bucket, wails for extended periods of time, and is biting/licking the kennel bars. Out of the kennel, she initially presented as fearful and avoidant of interaction with handlers, but has slowly begun to warm up to familiar handlers in quieter settings. On walks, she is becoming increasingly anxious - hypervigilant of her surroundings, panting lightly, pacing on the way back to the building; she has also screeched when clipping a drag leash to her collar so she could be off-leash. Medically, Modela is apparently healthy.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Medically, Modela is apparently healthy. Modela was surrendered by her previous owner due to ongoing personal concerns in the home. During her stay in care, she has shown highly fearful behavior, including hard barking, growling, avoiding handlers, and reluctance to leave her kennel, resulting in snapping at and thrashing on leash. She also shows high levels of stress in novel environments such as the play yard, pacing, panting, and consistently seeking exit. Her previous owners report that she is under socialized, and may bark and growl at unfamiliar people and dogs; they also report that she is anxious when left alone. They otherwise describe her as a playful, active, independent dog who enjoys going on runs, loves water, and has done well with handling such as bathing and brushing. Due to her reported behavior in the home, and the highly fearful and defensive behavior observed in the care center, we recommend she be placed in an adult-only home with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Date of assessment:: 10/14/2026
Summary:: 10/14/26 Modela is brough to the behavior office for an updated handling assessment. She sniffs and explores the room, panting, and does not approach when the handler calls her over. When the handler begins to position her to begin the assessment she becomes avoidant; she pants, turns her head, and tries to move away repeatedly. When given more leash, she moves away and lies down facing away from the handler. Out of concern for her stress levels, the handling assessment was not continued. 9/29/26 Modela has not acclimated well to the care center, and has allowed only minimal handling. On intake, Modela was observed to be barking and growling at staff, and since then has growled, snapped at the leash, and thrashed on leash when handlers have attempted to remove her from kennel. When brough to the behavior room she has continued to show high levels of fear, panting, pacing, whimpering, and seeking exit. Due to these concerns, a handling assessment is not conducted. 06/02/25: Previous assessment available on request.
Summary (4):: 10/14: Modela is seen lying at the front of her kennel, wailing while her mouth is open wide and her teeth are gripping the balls. She and her kennel are soaked due to her biting on her water bowls. 10/11: As a handler passes the room, they can hear a banging noise coming from the room. When they enter to check the source, they find Modela holding and pulling on her water bowls, using all her weight for leverage. The handler calls to her and drops treats into the kennel to break her focus. She pauses briefly, slowly lets go, and sniffs the treats. The handler sees that she and her kennel is soaked due to her biting the bowls. Modela does not take the treats and stands in place panting heavily. The handler then leaves to find a toy to offer her but she does not engage with that either. 10/5/26: Modela is whimpering and vocalizing at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is able to be leashed with ease and is then taken to the behavior room. In the room, she begins to screech and vocalize as to handler attempts to transfer her to a drag leash. Once on a drag leash, she continues to whimper as she would jump up on the handlers and lean in to receive pets. She would constantly lean into the handlers to receive more pets while still whimpering. She has no reactions to other people entering the room and is able to return back to her kennel with no issues.
Summary (5):: 10/03/26: Modela is at the front of the kennel barking as the handler approaches. She pushes her nose out of the kennel as the door opens, but then backs up and is easily leashed and taken outside on a walk. On the walk she pulls mildly; she is vigilant, scanning her surroundings, and doesn't drop her head to sniff. Coming back into the shelter, she begins to pant lightly and paces back and forth in front of the handler a few of times before continuing into the building. She is returned to her kennel with no issue. 10/02/26: Modela is lying next to her kennel door when the handler approaches. When the handler opens her kennel door, she approaches the door but will avoid being leashed. The handler slowly leashes her, and Modela begins to lick their hand. They are taken to the behavior office which they allow petting from the primary handler. When they see a familiar handler in the room, they begin to whine and seek out attention from them. With the secondary handler in the room, she allows the handler to collar and attach a drag lead to her collar. Modela walks around the room sniffing and whining but allows petting. She is taken back to the kennel on the drag leash and placed inside, allowing the handler to unclip the drag leash. 09/30/26: Modela is standing at the front of kennel demand barking as handler approaches. She continues to bark at the front of kennel and is leashed with ease, readily exiting kennel. Modela walks to the Canine Behavior Office and will jump up onto handlers socially but can become conflicted at times and her eye will widen. She is easily refocused. Modela accepts light petting along her hind end. After her session, she is returned to kennel safely. 9/27/26: Modella is laying down in the back corner of her kennel with a tense body as handler approaches. She remains laying down and begins to growl as the handler unlocks the door. She turns her head away as the handler slowly presents their leash and she continues to growl. She begins to growl louder and snaps at the leash when the handler attempts to lasso her. Each time the handler is able to get the leash over her head she would then quickly thrash it off and quickly run to the opposite side of her kennel. After multiple attempts ,the handler is able to lasso her at the back corner and she is then taken outside to the yard. In the yard, she has a tense body and tucked tail as she paces around. She has no interest in interacting with the handler. She then begins to whimper and constantly would try to climb up the fence, jump up on the pool and paw at the gate door to seek exit. When returning back to the building, she then has to be taken to the office due her kennel not being ready. While in the room, she would pace around while heavy panting and would begin to whimper as she constantly approached the doors to seek exit. She pulls on the way back to her kennel and quickly enters with no issues.
Summary (6):: 09/26/26: Modella is laying down with a tense body in the front left corner of her kennel as handler approaches. As handler opens the door she scurries to the back corner of her kennel, briefly low growling. Handler is able to lasso her after several attempts. The door is opened and Modella quickly walks out with a crouched body. She is taken to the street for a walk. She has a tense body throughout the walk, darting in different directions on the leash, and head whipping towards any loud noise. When handler attempts to clip the leash to return, she head whips. Modella is returned to her kennel without further issue, and a hook is used to remove the leash. 09/25/26: Modella is laying down with a tense body, in the front left corner of her kennel as handler approaches. As the door is opened, Modella will scurry to the back of the kennel, even attempting to crawl underneath the kuranda bed. She continues darting in the back of her kennel, continuously attempting to crawl underneath the bed. Handler is able to lasso her after several attempts. Handler opens the door wide, but Modella does not come forward. Mild leash pressure is applied, and she begins to thrash intensely. Handler relieves pressure and crouches down, attempting to coax her forward but she retreats and thrashes again. Handler tries to use leash pressure again but Modella continues to thrash, falling over onto the water bowls in the kennel. Handler gently tosses leash inside the kennel and uses a hook to remove the leash. Modella bites the hook once before leash is successfully removed. Interaction is ended due to very high FAS levels. 9/24/26: Modella is laying down in the back corner of her kennel with a tense body as handler approaches. The handler first tosses treats inside before unlocking the door, and she has no interest in the treats. When the handler squeaks a squeaker she then slowly sits up. She then retreats to the opposite side of the kennel as the handler unlocks the door. She turns her head away as the handler slowly presents their leash and she begins to growl. She stops growling when the handler takes their leash away. When the handler presents their leash again, she begins to growl louder and snaps at the leash when the handler attempts to lasso her. Due to fearfulness and her kennel be a very clean, the handler then closes and locks the door and ends the interac
Summary (7):: Note from previous stay - 6/2/25: ACS staff approach a handler and seek assistance with taking Modela out, as she is fearful and at the back of her kennel, growling when approached. The handler grabs some ham and attempts to remove Modela. When Modela sees the handler, she shrinks into the furthest corner of her kennel but remains lying down on her kuranda bed. She does growl at the handler and does not sniff the ham that the handler tosses to her. There is untouched food, medication, and treats at the front of her kennel. With a slow approach and several minutes, the handler can place the lead over Modela successfully, but she pulls her neck in like a turtle. The handler opens the door fully and steps to the side to allow Modela the chance to exit on her own. The handler continues to call and tries to coax Modela out. After several minutes, Modela begins to exit, but when the other dogs in the room start barking due to the arrival of other staff, Modela starts jumping up and thrashing. She stops and takes a few steps when the handler begins walking, but then pauses to thrash again once in the hallway. The handler doesn't move to give Modela a break, and she begins walking on her own. The handler takes her to the behavior office while her kennel is cleaned. Due to her fearfulness, the handler does not attempt to collar her or place her on a slip lead with a stopper. Modela immediately relieves herself before attempting to find a hiding place. The handler sits on the couch, and she jumps up and sits by the handler, remaining hyper-vigilant and wary of the handler and her surroundings. A second handler who is in the room, approaches slowly to take Modela's picture, and she begins grumbling at them, backing behind the handler who had taken her out. She jumps down from the couch when the second handler stands, but then retreats to the other handler when they bend again to try for a better picture, still grumbling. The second handler leaves to check her kennel, and Modela jumps up back to sit beside the handler. Once her kennel is ready, she walks back into her kennel without issu

ENERGY LEVEL:: Modela is described as medium energy by her previous owners, and will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Modela's fearful and defensive behavior, we recommend she be placed in an adult-only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Modelo has not acclimated well to the care center environment and has shown highly fearful and defensive behavior during her stay: on intake, when being removed from her kennel, and when outside of her kennel in the play yards and behavior room. Due to this high level of fear, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: During her stay at the care center, Modela has shown significant fear-based behaviors, including growling and hard barking at staff, and extreme reluctance to leave her kennel, escalating to growling, snapping at the leash, and thrashing on leash. She is also shows a very high level of stress in other contexts such as play yards and the behavior room, pacing, panting, whining, and consistently seeking exit. Her signs of discomfort must be respected. Her previous owners also report that she barks and growls at strangers on walks or when first being introduced. It is important to always go slow and give Modela the option to walk away from any social interaction. She should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be her choice to approach a new person or thing. She would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Separation anxiety: Modela is reported by her previous owners to be anxious when left alone. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a future home environment. Please see the handout on Separation anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Modela's previous owners report that she barks and growls at unfamiliar dogs while on walks. Modela may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/Barrier frustration.
