Reserved

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Chase is at risk for behavior concerns. He has a bite history from his previous home, please see behavior notes. While at the care center he has displayed fearful behavior but has allowed some handling with staff. He has been diagnosed with a mass that will need follow up care.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A staff member writes: Chase is one beautiful boy! He is fearful and needs a gentle, patience touch to break through that wall of his. This pup probably has the most goofy personality but for now he just wants a calm environment. He was relax with the kids from his previous home, and mostly keeps to himself when he is around other dogs. This pup definitely needs some TLC! If you understand how shy and nervous personality works than Chase is waiting for you at Brooklyn Animal Care Centers.

The owner was reported to be sleeping in her bed with Chase when her husband came home from work and yelled at Chase to go to his crate. When the owner attempted to remove Chase from her husband, Chase turned and bit the owner's left palm.

Housetrained:: Partially

Energy level/descriptors:: Chase is described as mellow and independent with a medium level of energy.

Summary:: Since Chase's admission to the care center on 8/3/19, his behavior has remained highly fearful and he is wary of all handling. Upon attempts to rope him and bring him outside of his kennel for walks and interactions, Chase has been observed to bare his teeth, low growl and hard bark when he is approached. During his interactions, Chase does not solicit attention and avoids contact from staff, unable to settle or relax. These observations are indicative of a very high level of fearfulness and stress. To eliminate the risk of increasing Chase's stress level any further, along with the risk of redirecting the stress onto a handler or another animal in our care, we will not be conducting a handling assessment for Chase at this time.

Summary:: According to Chase's previous owner, he has not lived or been around other dogs so it is unknown of his behavior around them. 8/4-8/6: When off leash at the Care Center, Chase is introduced to a novel female. He does not greet the female and avoids her and handlers for the entire session.

Date of intake:: 8/3/2019

Summary:: Nervous; No handling performed

Date of initial:: 8/4/2019

Summary:: Tense, very nervous, ears back, barking, growling, baring teeth; Sedated

ENERGY LEVEL:: We are unable to accurately determine Chase's energy level due to his high level of fearfulness observed in the care center.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 8/6: Chase repeatedly dodged the handler's lead when she attempted to remove him from the kennel. After several attempts, he finally allowed her to place it on him and walk him to the yard. With the help of another handler, both moved slowly and at Chase's comfort to attach a leash onto his collar. Chase displayed a low tense body whenever handlers moved near him and he immediately closed his mouth when one was too close. His body language was respected and everyone gave him his space. He explored the yard most of the session, and did not seek attention. After his session was over, with a slow approach he was placed on a lead and walked back to his kennel without an issue.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: Due to Chase's high level of fearfulness, the staff's inability to safely handle him without extreme caution, and his bite history, it is recommended that Chase be placed with a New Hope Partner to help manage these behaviors and decompress in a more stable environment prior to permanent placement in an adult-only home. We advise safe and appropriate management when handling Chase, as well as utilizing guidance from a qualified, professional trainer/behaviorist.
