Animal Profile

Keanu

Hello, my name is Keanu. My animal id is #212982. I am a desexed female brown tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/23/2024, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Keanu is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/2/24 FB47 Keanu was inside the den and began low growling when he heard me remove the lock to the kennel. When I approached with treats on the scratcher tool, he hard struck the tool while continuing to growl he ignored the laser. 11/13/24 FB26 Hisses and swats at the scratcher tool when attempting to make contact through the side portal door. Left alone to reduce stress. 11/14/24 ACFR In den low growling upon approach, pupils dilated, body tense, pressed against back of den. Upon attempt at interaction with scratcher tool she hisses, lunges, and swats hard. When attempting again with squeeze up treat, she hisses, lunges, and swats hard once again. Treat is left in kennel and interaction is ended to minimize stress. 11/15/24 FB26 Hisses and swats at the scratcher tool when slowly engaging. Growls in place while retrieving the tool. 11/22/24 FB26 Hisses, growls and strikes through the portal door. Avoids contact and remains inside the den.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Curious,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Pet-induced aggression,Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: See details of bite/scratch history above. It is possible that Keanu may become overstimulated from the activity in the home with 3 children. In addition, due to her severe matting and possible underlying pain, it is possible that she is sensitive to touch and will escalate in response.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to bite/scratch history.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Keanu was growling from inside the den when approached, appearing alert with wide eyes and dilated pupils. Her ears were erect and forward. She struck at the scratcher tool when an attempt was made to pet her through the side portal door. Although curious, she leaned forward to sniff the tool but quickly retreated. Throughout the assessment, she continued to growl and shrank back in her spot. Keanu is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, scratch, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
