Summary:: Princess Polly has been observed to be highly fearful while in care. Noted to balk on leash and needs a sling to be guided to kennel. This behavior is difficult to redirect, even with the sling, Polly is noted to escalate to snapping at the leash. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety, Polly is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (6):: 10/17/26 - When handler approaches kennel door Princess Polly is at the front of it with a neutral body, handler goes slow with leashing with her and she exits fine, she walks slowly out into the driveway, onto the street she walks fine, is somewhat responsive to treats, handler goes around the block with her to avoid walking back the way they came because she baulks once realizing they're returning to the building, handler does a light jog with her to keep her moving the whole walk. Once Polly reaches the driveway she baulks and refuses to move with treats and a toy, second handler comes out to assist with higher value treats, at one point she jumps on a handcart and handlers begin to move it slowly to try and bring her to the door but she jumps off. Handler decides to walk out of the driveway with her and trick her into a different entrance which works briefly but once she reaches the medical hall to the kennel she baulks again and tenses up. Higher value treats help her move only an inch but otherwise she refuses to move, at this point to more handlers come and decide to belly band her since she refuses to move at all. First handler walks her over while the other two have placed a belly band on the ground for the first handler to guide her over it, and once she is over it the two handlers bring the belly band straps up and around her, she does tense and begin to snap at the leash while first handler keeps leash held out assisting with pulling her while they all carry her to the kennel. Once inside kennel they use a hook to remove the leash fine, after this she was made TDO. 10/16/26: K9 Behavior is called to assist with Princess Polly who was reported to be baulking and growling when handlers attempt to belly band her. Member of K9 behavior arrives and sees Polly laying near the wall side of the kennel room with their handler attempting to comfort her, handler requests to walk her out the room and into the behavior office to allow Polly to decompress which they oblige. Princess Polly walks with handlers into the office and allows brief pets and accepts treats with a loose body. Handler gives K9 behavior member the leash and they walk with Princess back to kennel, upon reaching the kennel room she baulks again, handler runs her back to kennel and uses moderate leash pressure to muscle her into kennel quickly, she enters kennel and interaction is ended.
Summary (7):: 10/16/26: Princess Polly is at the front of her kennel with a soft body and wagging tail as the handler speaks to her; she is easily leashed and brought out the room. The handler walks Princess to the yard; after she relieves herself, she attempts to sit on the bench next to the handler, but struggles to climb onto it. The handler places a kurunda bed under her, and she climbs right up. Princess allows brief pets, but stares at a handler in the adjacent pen. After a few minutes, the handler walks Princess back to the shelter, but she baulks and pancakes; the handler walks her back and through another pen, attempting to walk her back, but she baulks again. The handler jogs towards the building; princess initially drags her feet, but jogs after the handler. They clip the leash. Princess baulks again once they enter the room; the handler attempts to jog her in, but she drags her feet and baulks. Other handlers step in to help; they toss treats and spray cheese, but Princess doesn't stand up. The handler continues to jog forwards, but Princess baulks and drags. As they get close to the kennel, Princess eventually stands up and enters her kennel on her own. 11/7/25: It is reported on the behavior board that she needed the belly band to be returned to kennel and will bite up the leash and band. 11/7/25 For assessment: Cayenne (Princess Polly) is neutral soft body when handler approaches kennel. Cayenne takes treats gently through kennel door, is easily and become wiggly bodied as slip leash is placed on. Cayenne (Princess Polly) exits kennel with loose leash, soft body wagging tail. On sidewalk Cayenne (Princess Polly) is social, checks in with handler for verbal cues and takes treats gently. Cayenne (Princess Polly) sees a LMB with staff member within 10 feet but shows no interest. When entering MACC Cayenne baulks when passing medical staff, pulls toward with soft wiggly body is social manner. Treat trail is used to lure forward, passing kennel rooms Cayenne baulks harder, leash pressure is used to pull forward a few steps then Cayenne (Princess Polly) resumes walking to office for assessment without issue. Cayenne (Princess Polly) is social with staff, taking treats with loose body. After assessment she is easily re-leashed, walks out of office loose body. Cayenne baulks outside of kennel room, treat trail work for few steps, but not in kennel room. Leash pressure is used to pull Cayenne (Princess Polly) a few steps and she resumes walking, baulks again outside of kennel. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Princess Polly so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Princess Polly's fearful behavior and potential for defensive behaviors, we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Handling Sensitivity: During her medical exam, Polly was attempting to move away from the handler, and when they attempted to look for her spay tattoo she began to nip at their hands. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Polly to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive: During her previous stay Polly displayed fearful tendencies. Such as a tucked tail, whale eye, and thrashing during their medical exam. During her current stay in the care center, Polly has been observed to balk on leash and needs a sling to be guided to kennel. She is also observed to snap at the leash. It is important to move slowly with Polly, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
