Winter
Hello, my name is Winter. My animal id is #245780. I am a desexed male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 2 months old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 1/17/2026.
Winter is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Winter has displayed some defensive aggression and mild arousal concerns, including, mouthing hands and clothing, and fixating on dogs and moving stimuli when on walks. Winter during some interaction will display high levels of anxiety such as panting, whining, exit-seeking, and when initially brought into care was snapping at the leash and difficultly acclimating at first. Winter has warmed up to staff, enjoying going to the yard and playing but struggling to settle in some interactions. Medically, Winter is apparently healthy.

Winter arrived in our care as a stray with very limited history. Since being here, he has shown himself to be a sensitive and fearful dog who is still learning to feel safe in new environments and around unfamiliar people. While he can be friendly and wiggly with handlers he trusts, he may become avoidant or anxious when pressured and needs time, patience, and space to build confidence and feel secure. My Ideal Home Winter will do best in a calm, experienced adult-only home or rescue placement that understands fearful dogs and is comfortable working through anxiety and defensive behaviors using force-free, positive reinforcement methods. A quiet environment with predictable routines, slow introductions, and respect for his need for space - especially around resting areas like crates - will help him feel safe and supported while he gains confidence. Good with Kids? No - an adult-only home is recommended at this time due to his fearfulness, anxiety, and history of defensive warning behaviors when feeling pressured. Other Fun Facts When he begins to trust his handlers, Winter shows a softer side - greeting familiar people with a loose, wiggly body, checking in frequently on walks, and even offering playful gestures like small play bows. He enjoys staying close to trusted handlers and benefits from calm, reassuring companionship.

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We recommend Winter be placed in an adult-only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Winter entered the care center after police were called by his owner to remove him from the home following an incident of snapping. In the prior home the owner was coming back from the store and went to remove him from his crate where he growled and air snapped at their hand. Owner allowed Winter to calm down and leave the crate on his own, where he went back to being friendly and outgoing. Later after the incident Winter went to lie down in his crate and the owner noted that when they went near the crate and attempted to approach winter snapped at them in warning and started to growl. Due to his behavioral in the prior home and fearfulness shown in the care center, Winter is available for rescue through one of our new hope partners.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Winter is noted to be fearful and will attempt to flee. Winter is noted to become avoidant of touch. In the prior home the owner was coming back from the store and went room remove him from his crate where he growled and air snapped at their hand. Owner allowed Winter to calm down and leave the crate on his own, where he went back to being friendly and outgoing. Later after the incident Winter went to lie down in his crate and the owner noted that when they went near the crate and attempted to approach winter snapped at them in warning and started to growl.These incidents suggest guarding of space combined with fear and a defensive response when pressured. Training should emphasize respecting his need for space, choice-based interactions, and gradual desensitization to approaches near the crate to reduce escalation and support safety. Please see the handout on Resource guarding & Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Anxiety: Winter appears anxious while in the care centers. He would pace, pant heavily, and whine during his handling assessment. If Winter displays anxious behavior in his future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Amxiety.
