Augie was surrendered due to multiple bite history in his previous home. Augie has been tolerant of being taken out on walks while in care. Medically, we suspect accumulation of tartar and dental disease due to age, otherwise appears healthy. This pet is available only through ACC New Hope partners. To adopt or foster, please complete the pre-screener form below. Inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. Pre-Screener Form Augie is a small dog who will require an experienced, patient adopter, as he has a history of multiple bites and needs someone familiar with managing behavioral triggers and reading canine body language. He can be sensitive to handling, especially grooming, and prefers interaction on his own terms, so a structured, understanding home will be essential for his success. Despite these challenges, Augie is a very active and playful companion who loves being close to his people, often spending time in the bedroom or wherever they are. His previous owner described him as a happy dog who gives enthusiastic greetings after time apart and loves playing fetch with his ball. He walks beautifully on leash with no pulling and is used to several short walks each day. Augie also enjoys his treats-especially Beggin' and marrow treats-and can often be found relaxing in his favorite cozy spots around the home.

Summary:: Due to multiple bite history, Augie is not a candidate for a handling assessment.
Summary:: 4/14: Augie is avoidant of greeting a F LMB dog at the gate. He keeps his distance, lifts one paw. He readily walks in the opposite direction.
Summary (1):: Augie is a small male dog with a very active and playful personality, though he prefers affection and contact on his own terms. He spends most of his time in the bedroom or wherever people are, enjoying being close by. While he goes to a professional groomer, he does not tolerate bathing or brushing at home, as these experiences make him fearful and uncomfortable. Augie is excellent on a leash and walks calmly without pulling, typically going on 3–4 walks a day for about 15 minutes each. He was previously crate-trained in a black metal crate but no longer needs it. Car rides are a challenge for him—he gets nervous, pants, shakes, and even tries to open the back window. Augie knows cues such as “sit,” “go bye-bye,” and “go to place.” He is especially loved for his happy demeanor, the way he greets his owner after work, cuddling in bed, and playing fetch with his ball. His favorite activities include playing with his ball and lounging in unusual spots like the kitchen table, and he enjoys treats such as Beggin’ treats and marrow treats.
Summary (7):: 4/14: Augie is easily leashed and brought on a walk. As they are approaching the yard with a female large mixed breed dog, he avoids going close to the gate. They turn around and walk the other way, and Augie relaxes on the walk. He keeps a loose leash, ignores a member of the public speaking with staff and tolerates being clipped to return to kennel. 4/13: Augie growls on approach. The slip lead is secured, and he jumps out on his own. He walks nicely on leash, relieving himself. He gives whale eyes as the handler goes to clip him and jumps into kennel on his own. 4/12: Augie growls as the handler reaches in to secure a slip lead. Once secured, he jumps out on his own. He is brought on a walk, keeping a loose leash. He tolerates being clipped and returns without issue. 4/10 Upon approach, Augie is lying down in his kennel. His head is down, resting on his paws, and his tail is wrapped around his body. When staff approach the front of his kennel, he does not react. He continues to stay still, but his eyes are looking at the staff member. Staff hands him a small Kong with some cheese inside. He lifts his head and smells the Kong, but does not try to eat it. A while later, staff returned to take Augie out for a walk, when he was outside, the Kong toy was found empty in his kennel.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to multiple bite history, we recommend an adult only home. Place with a New Hope partner: We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Augie is noted to have accidents in the house and will likely need guidance with house training. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Please see the handout on House Soiling. Resource Guarding: Augie finds treat of a high value. He is reported to have a tense body and hover. We recommend Augie be left alone when eating. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of his mouth. Should you have to remove something from Augie, we recommend always trading for something of an equal or higher value. He should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Handling/touch sensitivity/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Augie gives clear warnings when he is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Augie, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow him to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if she is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful Potential for Defensive Aggression. Bite history (human)/Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression: Augie has a history of biting (5+ times), because this is a learned behavior it is likely to occur again. He will need an experienced owner familiar with dog body language to avoid another incident. Please see the handout on Multiple Bite History and Risk of Future Aggression. On-Leash Reactivity: Augie is reported to react toward moving objects, people that approach. He will attempt to bite. He will need an experienced owner familiar with working with this behavior. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on On-Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash-biting: Augie is reported to bite the leash on walks. We recommend walking him with treats or a toy to dissuade him from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach him to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see the handout on Leash Manners.
